Chapter 1: heaven ain't close in a place like this

Chapter Text

-Evangeline-

march 19th, 2020

I picked up my head from the desk. It was the end of the first class, math, and I was already wanting to go home. All I could think about was playing Minecraft with one of my best friends, Yoshiro. He was in the class above me, 11th grade. But he was only a few months older than me. We had been friends since 3rd grade.

The next class was chemistry, and I’ve always hated that class. I was so tired today because I barely got any sleep, I stayed up late doing homework and now I can’t keep my eyes open.

Eventually I got to lunch break, and I sat with my friends Sage and Yoshiro. We talked about manga and our random interests that we shared. At the end of lunch we all walked into the school building. On the way up, I made eye contact with the guy I have had a crush on for so long, Reign. Every day I talk to him, even if it’s just a simple “hi”. I try to talk to him so we can become closer, but that clearly hasn't worked yet.

“There’s only two more classes left,” I whisper to myself. I have always been incredibly lazy and never felt like doing anything, especially listening to the teacher yap while writing notes for an hour. I was heading to my classroom while holding my heavy books, and I was trying not to drop anything. I heard footsteps approach me. I turned around and to my surprise, I saw Reign. “Do you need help carrying that?” Reign asked me. My brain was spinning, I got extremely dizzy, and I could not breathe. I couldn’t believe that Reign, the boy I loved most in the world, was standing right in front of me. “Yes please…” I responded in a nervous voice. I approached him and gave him half of the stack of books. My arms grazed against his. “Sorry,” I awkwardly said. “No it’s okay, I really don’t mind.” He quietly responded. We walked together to my classroom and he set the books down on my desk. “Thank you so much” I said to him. “No problem, can I get your number?” My heart dropped. He just helped me carry books, now he’s asking for my number?! He slipped me a piece of paper and I wrote my number in the best handwriting I possibly could. “I’ll call you after school” Reign said to me. “Okay! Bye Reign!”

After what just happened to me, I was so excited and I could not hold it in. While I was silently freaking out, a loud alarm interrupted me. The ringing was so loud, and everyone jumped. The alarm shouted, “Lock down. Lock Down. This is not a drill. I repeat, lock down. This is not a drill.” My heart dropped even further than it did when Reign asked for my number. My teacher instructed us to sit in a line against the wall, while turning off lights and silencing her phone.
