Work Text:

The bell for third period hasn’t even rung yet, and Yutaka Kobayakawa already feels like sinking into the floorboards. Standing in the hallway of Ryōō High School is a third-year Yutaka doesn’t recognize—tall, loud, and aggressively tapping his foot. He intercepts her on the way back from the staff room, claiming she had bumped into him and spilled his juice, though Yutaka’s hands are entirely empty.

"Well? What are you gonna do about it?" the boy barks, leaning down to intimidate her. "A proper apology involves replacing it. Go to the vending machine. Get me a coffee. Now."

Yutaka’s face flushes bright red. She clutches the edges of her school blazer, her small frame trembling. "I... I'm sorry, but I really didn't—"

"Did I ask for an excuse?" He steps closer.

Before Yutaka can completely dissolve into tears, a quiet, solid presence materializes right beside her. Minami Iwasaki steps into the space between Yutaka and the senior. Her expression is completely unreadable, her pale green eyes fixed on the older boy with the icy intensity of a winter storm. She doesn't say a word at first. She just stands there, tall and unyielding, effectively shielding Yutaka from view.

"Who are you supposed to be? Her bodyguard?" the third-year sneers, trying to look over Minami’s shoulder.

Minami adjusts her posture, her shoulders squaring. "You're making a scene," she says, her voice remarkably calm, low, and steady. "And you're lying. I was walking behind her. She didn't touch your drink. You dropped it yourself because you were looking at your phone."

The boy blinks, caught off guard by her bluntness. "What did you say, first-year?"

Yutaka peeks out from behind Minami's back, her eyes wide. "M-Minami-chan..."

"We have class," Minami continues, completely ignoring his rising temper. She reaches back, gently taking Yutaka’s hand, gently interlockign their fingers. "We're leaving."

"Hey! I'm not done with you!" The upperclassman reaches out to grab Minami’s shoulder.

He never gets the chance. Out of nowhere, a bright, cheerful, and incredibly loud voice cut through the tension."Yutaka-chaaaan! Minami-chaaaan! There you are!"

Konata Izumi comes skidding around the corner, a half-eaten chocolate cornet in one hand and a gaming magazine in the other. Right on her heels are Kagami and Tsukasa Hiiragi. Kagami takes one look at the upperclassman's aggressive stance, crosses her arms, and steps up next to Minami.

"Is there a problem here?" Kagami asks, her eyes narrowing as she glares at the boy. Her tone made it very clear that she was not someone to trifle with. "Because if you're bothering the underclassmen, I can go find the student council president right now. Or the vice principal."

The third-year looks at Minami, who hadn't broken eye contact. Then he looks at Kagami, who looks ready to drag him to the office by his collar. Finally, he looks at Konata, who's casually munching on her cornet while watching him like an NPC in a tactical RPG. Realizing he's completely outnumbered and outmatched by a terrifying combination of stoicism, discipline, and sheer weirdness, the boy clicks his tongue.

"Whatever. First-years these days have no respect," he mutters, turning on his heel and storming down the hall.

The moment he disappears around the corner, the tension evaporated. "Are you okay, Yutaka?" Tsukasa asks softly, rushing over to pat her shoulders.

"I-I'm fine. Thank you, everyone," Yutaka breathes, her chest heaving with relief. She looks up at her girlfriend. "Minami-chan, you were amazing. You weren't scared at all?"

Minami lets out a soft sigh, the rigid tension finally leaving her shoulders. A tiny, genuine smile tugs at the corner of her lips, and a faint blush appears on her cheeks."I was a little scared," Minami admits softly, squeezing Yutaka's hand reassurance. "But he was picking on you. I couldn't just stand there and do nothing."

"Man, that was just like the opening scene of an anime!" Konata cheers, taking the last bite of her pastry. "The quiet hero protects the innocent protagonist! Ten out of ten!"

"Konata, this is real life, stop treating it like a manga," Kagami sighs, though she smiles gently at the two first-years. "Come on, let's get you two back to your classroom before the bell rings."

As they walk down the hall, Yutaka walks a little closer to Minami, feeling incredibly safe.

The high-pitched chime marking the start of lunch has barely stopped echoing through the hallways when the door to Class 1-D slides open.

"Yututaka-chan! Minami-chan! Mission: Lunchtime has commenced!" Konata bounces into the doorway, her bento box balanced precariously on top of a fresh manga magazine.

Right behind her comes Tsukasa, smiling sweetly with her own wrapped lunch, and Kagami, who looks equal parts fond and exasperated. "Don't yell into their classroom, Konata," Kagami scolds, though her eyes immediately scan the room until they land on Yutaka. "How are you holding up? That jerk from this morning didn't come back, did he?"

Yutaka looks up from her desk, her soft blue eyes lighting up as a tiny smile spreads across her face. "No, Kagami-san. I haven't seen him at all. Thank you again."

"Good," Kagami hums, crossing her arms. "Because I double-checked, and he's a third-year in Class 3-C. If he causes any more trouble, I'm personally handing him over to the faculty."

"Aw, look at Kagami-chan being the reliable hero," Konata teases, slinging an arm around Kagami's shoulders—only to be promptly shoved off with a red-faced glare. "Anyway, the weather is way too nice to eat inside. To the courtyard bench!"

Five minutes later, the group settles around a set of shaded wooden benches in the quietest corner of the courtyard. True to form, any lingering tension from the morning's confrontation vanish the moment bentos are unwrapped. Konata immediately initiates a high-stakes debate while pointing at Tsukasa's lunchbox.

"Tsukasa," Konata starts, her face deadpan with absolute seriousness. "Explain your methodology. The octopus-shaped side-dish sausage: do you eat the head first, or the tentacles?"

Tsukasa blinks, holding her chopsticks frozen in mid-air. "Umm... the head? I think?"

"A classic mistake!" Konata declares dramatically, leaning over the table. "If you eat the head first, you destroy the structural integrity! Eating the tentacles first creates an aerodynamic snack experience!"

"Konata, what are you even talking about?!" Kagami snaps, slapping her forehead. "It's a hot dog cut into four pieces, not an aerospace project! Just eat your food!"

Yutaka lets out a soft, airy giggle, the quiet warmth of her upperclassmen’s banter completely washing away the leftover anxiety from third period. Beside her, Minami sits quietly. She eats her rice ball with delicate, precise movements, listening attentively to the noise around them without adding much herself. To anyone watching, she's her usual, stoic self—a calm, unreadable pillar. Underneath the edge of the wooden bench, however, out of sight from the table above, Minami’s left hand slowly lowers.

Her long fingers brush gently against the hem of Yutaka’s skirt before finding Yutaka’s small, hesitant hand resting on her knee. Yutaka gives a tiny, involuntary start, her shoulders tensing for a split second. But as Minami’s fingers slide smoothly between her own, lacing their hands together in a firm, quiet hold, Yutaka’s body melts into relaxation. Minami doesn't turn her head. She keeps her eyes fixed straight ahead on Konata, who's now trying to demonstrate the "proper aerodynamics of a tamagoyaki." But the pad of Minami's thumb gently, rhythmically strokes the back of Yutaka's hand under the table—a private, steady rhythm meant only for her. I've got you. You're safe.

A bright flush blooms across Yutaka’s cheeks, warming her all the way to the tips of her ears. She keeps her head tilted downward toward her bento, hiding her face, but she squeezes Minami’s hand back with all the strength her small fingers possess.

"Hey, Yutaka-chan, are you okay?" Tsukasa asks, tilting her head innocently across the table. "Your face is really red. Do you have a fever?"

"E-Eh?!" Yutaka squeaks, nearly dropping her chopsticks. "N-No! I'm totally fine! Just... the sun! The sun is a little warm today!"

Kagami raises an eyebrow, her sharp eyes darting from Yutaka’s flaming face down to the subtle angle of Minami’s left shoulder—which sits just a little closer to Yutaka than usual. Minami smoothly takes another quiet bite of her rice ball, her expression completely unchanged, while beneath the table, her hand holds Yutaka's just a little bit tighter.

The chime for the end of lunch echoes across the courtyard, signaling it's time to clean up.

"Aw, man, lunch breaks are way too short," Konata sighs, tossing her empty juice box into the recycling bin with a practiced flick of her wrist. "We didn't even get to settle the cream puff argument."

"That's because it wasn't an argument, Konata, it was just you making up rules," Kagami snaps gently, though there's no real bite to her voice. She stacks her bento box and turns toward the first-year. "You two head on back to Class 1-D. We'll see you after school."

"Thank you, Kagami-san! Bye, everyone!" Yutaka offers a sweet wave, her cheeks still flushed a delicate pink.

Minami gives a polite bow. "Thank you for joining us."

As Yutaka turns to walk down the hallway, Minami adjusts her shoulder bag to fall behind her. Kagami, however, lingers by the courtyard entrance, her eyes sharp and observant. She lets Tsukasa and Konata wander ahead—Konata already distracted by a handheld game system—and steps neatly into Minami's path before the taller freshman could follow Yutaka.

"Minami," Kagami calls out softly, keeping her tone low enough that it won't carry.

Minami pauses mid-step, her pale green eyes blinking in quiet surprise. "Hiiragi-senpai? Is something wrong?"

Kagami crosses her arms, leaning slightly against the hallway wall. She looks at Minami for a quiet moment, taking in the underclassman's perfectly composed posture, before letting out a small, fond sigh. "You really don't let much show on your face, do you?" Kagami begins, a wry smile tugging at the corner of her lips.

Minami tilts her head, genuine confusion flickering across her stoic features. "I... don't follow."

"Under the bench," Kagami explains simply, gesturing vaguely toward the courtyard table they just left. "I saw your left arm. And I saw how red Yutaka's face got the second Tsukasa asked about her fever."

Minami’s composure cracks for a fraction of a second—her eyes widening, a subtle, dusty blush spreading rapidly across the bridge of her nose and the tips of her ears. She instinctively pulls her hands together in front of her skirt, her fingers twisting slightly.

"I... we..." Minami stammers, her voice dropping to a barely audible whisper. "It wasn't... I didn't mean to make anyone uncomfortable..."

"Hey, relax," Kagami interrupts gently, holding up a hand to quiet her. Her expression softens, replacing her usual sharp edge with the warm, protective nature of an older sister. "I'm not scolding you. And I'm definitely not going to go around teasing you two like Konata would if she figured it out."

Minami lets out a soft breath of relief, though her cheeks remain bright red. "Thank you."

"I just wanted to say..." Kagami pauses, rubbing the back of her neck, suddenly looking a little bashful herself. "You did a really good job standing up for her this morning. Yutaka is a sweet kid, but she's fragile, and she gets overwhelmed really easily. Knowing she has someone who looks out for her like that—someone who really cares about her—makes me feel a lot better."

Minami looks at Kagami, the faint blush still lingering, but her posture relaxes. Her stoic expression settles back into place, replaced by a quiet, immovable resolve. "I'll always look out for her," Minami promises, her low voice steady and completely sincere. "No matter what."

Kagami smiles, stepping back to give Minami room to pass. "I know you will. Now go on, don't keep her waiting. If that third-year idiot tries anything again, you come find me immediately, got it?"

"Understood," Minami replies with a crisp nod.

As Kagami turns to catch up with her sister and Konata, Minami walks down the corridor toward Class 1-D. Waiting near the doorway, leaning against the frame with a hopeful smile, is Yutaka. The moment their eyes meet, Minami feels a quiet warmth bloom in her chest, stepping up to Yutaka's side with a newfound sense of peace.

The final bell of the day rings out across the school grounds, signaling the end of classes and the start of the golden afternoon. As the bustling noise of students filing out of Ryōō High echo down the corridors, Yutaka and Minami step through the school gates together. The cool autumn breeze rustles through the trees along the residential path, carrying with it the faint scent of fallen leaves and distant street food.

For the first few minutes, they walk in comfortable silence, keeping a respectable distance as they passed groups of fellow students heading toward the train station. But as the crowd thins and the familiar suburban street narrows into a quiet, sunlit alleyway, the unspoken boundary dissolves. Minami shifts her school bag to her outer shoulder. Without a word, she reaches down, her fingers brushing against Yutaka’s wrist before slipping seamlessly into her hand. This time, there's no need to hide. Their fingers entwine openly, locked together in a slow, steady rhythm as they walk side by side under the amber glow of the setting sun.

Yutaka looks over, her pale blue eyes shimmering with affection. A soft, warm smile spreads across her face as she squeezes Minami’s hand. "Minami-chan?" Yutaka asks softly, her voice barely louder than the breeze.

"Hmm?" Minami turns her head slightly, her pale green eyes gentle as she looks down at her.

"I didn't really get to say it properly this morning... with everyone around," Yutaka begins, her cheeks flushing a delicate, habitual pink. She stops walking, forcing Minami to halt as well. Yutaka turns to face her fully, holding Minami's hand with both of hers now. "Thank you. For stepping in today. When that senior was shouting at me, I was so scared I couldn't move. But the second you stood in front of me... I knew I was going to be okay."

Minami stands still, the soft light of dusk catching her short, dark blue hair. She feels a familiar, quiet flutter in her chest—the deep, overwhelming urge to protect the sweet girl standing before her. "You don't ever have to thank me for that, Yutaka," Minami murmurs, her usual flat tone melting into something unmistakably soft. She glances down at their joined hands, a faint blush warming her cheeks. "To be honest... my knees were trembling a little when I stepped up to him."

Yutaka blinks in surprise. "Really? But you looked so brave! You didn't hesitate at all!"

"I was terrified," Minami admits softly, stepping a half-inch closer so their shoulders brushes. "But seeing him talk to you like that... making you feel small... I couldn't bear it. I think I would have stepped between you two no matter who he was."

Yutaka’s breath hitches slightly. Moved by a burst of quiet courage, she steps into Minami’s space, leaning her forehead gently against Minami’s shoulder. She can hear the steady, rapid beat of Minami’s heart beneath her school uniform—proof of just how much Minami cares, despite her stoic exterior.

"I love you, Minami-chan," Yutaka whispers softly into the fabric of her blazer.

Minami’s breath catches in her throat. Slowly, carefully, as if handling something immensely precious, she raises her free arm and wraps it around Yutaka’s slender back, resting her chin lightly on top of Yutaka's soft hair. "I love you too, Yutaka," Minami replies, her voice steady and true. "Always."

They stand there together in the quiet alley for a long, unhurried moment, wrapped in the safe, quiet sanctuary they built for each other. When they finally pull back, Yutaka’s face is bright with a radiant, happy smile. Rejoining their hands, they resume their walk down the winding path toward home, their shadows stretching out long and united in the evening light.
