“If you’re going to kill me, do it while I’m sitting down so I don’t have to stand up again.” The words are flat, devoid of the usual boisterous heat that defines Naruto Uzumaki.
He's slumped against the cold concrete of the hospital stairwell, his back sliding down the wall until his tailbone hits the landing with a dull thud. He looks small, draped in an oversized hospital gown that swallows his frame, his chest heaving in shallow, uneven rhythms. Sasuke stands three steps above him, his silhouette sharp and jagged against the flickering fluorescent light. His muscles are coiled, his biceps tight under the fabric of his shirt, humming with a restless, aggressive energy. He has spent the morning pacing his room, the image of Itachi’s effortless superiority burned into the back of his retinas. Then he sees Naruto—bleeding, broken, but growing. The disparity is a bitter pill.
“Get up,” Sasuke snaps, the command vibrating in the narrow space. “The rooftop. Now. I want to see if that new strength of yours is actually real or just a fluke of your stamina.”
Naruto doesn’t look up. He just stares at the smudge of grease on his sandals. “Can’t you just… sit with me for a minute? We don’t need to talk.”
Sasuke freezes. The lack of a retort, the absence of a loud-mouthed challenge, feels like a physical blow. He narrows his eyes, sensing a trap. He descends one step, the scent of antiseptic and old blood clinging to the air. “What is this? What’s wrong with you? Why are you even in this wing of the hospital?”
Naruto’s voice is a dull rasp, scraping against the silence. “Sakura brought me. Said I needed to check on you since you’re recovering from those internal ruptures. She thinks I’m the ‘emotional support’ because I’m just as much of a disaster as you are.” He lets out a breath that sounds like a collapse. “I’m tired of being looked down on, Sasuke. Truly. So if you want to end it here, go ahead. I won’t fight back.”
The raw vulnerability of the statement hits Sasuke like a physical weight. He looks at Naruto—really looks at him. He sees the way Naruto’s skin is pale, the superficial scrapes on his knuckles where the basement membrane of his epidermis has been torn away, leaving raw, weeping pink flesh that hasn't quite closed. He sees the tremor in the blond’s hands, a fine vibration of neurological exhaustion.
Against his better judgment, the aggression drains out of Sasuke. The fire of the challenge dies into a flicker of confusion. He slides down the wall, landing beside Naruto with a heavy thud of fabric and leather. “Why are you like this?” Sasuke asks, his voice losing its edge. “You just mastered the Rasengan. You’re supposed to be insufferable about it. You’re supposed to be bragging to everyone who will listen.”
Naruto finally turns his head. His blue eyes are glazed, the pupils blown wide. “I did. It’s kickass. I know it is.” He swallows hard, a clicking sound in his throat. “But Shikamaru is already ten steps ahead of me in theory, and Lee… Lee’s life is hanging by a single thread in the ICU three floors up.” He shifts, his shoulder brushing against Sasuke’s. The contact is electric, a grounding point in a world that feels like it's dissolving. “I’m proud of the move,” Naruto whispers, his voice cracking. “But I feel hollow, Sasuke. Like there’s a hole in the middle of me that the Rasengan just makes bigger.”
They sit in the oppressive silence of the stairwell, two broken things leaning into one another. There is no training, no rivalry, and no revenge. There is only the rhythmic sound of their breathing and the heavy, visceral heat of two boys realizing that strength means nothing if there is no one left to hold the weight with you.
