Coming Out

Summary:

It was Peter's fault, really.

He had only ever told his mentor (and partial father figure), Tony Stark, about his crushes on girls. It wasn’t like Peter was purposefully trying to keep the fact he was bisexual a secret. It was just that Peter usually gave up on his male crushes a lot quicker since they often seemed hopeless. Maybe he should have mentioned his sexuality sooner but it never felt like it had mattered before, until now.

OR: Peter has a date. Tony assumes it's with a woman, he assumes wrong.

Notes:

This is a very short one shot of Peter coming out as bisexual to Tony. His crush is on a guy named “Wade” who you can think of as a high school AU deadpool (because I like spideypool) or a random classmate if you don’t like that ship. This fic is set after the events of Spider-man homecoming.

Work Text:

It was Peter's fault, really.

He had only ever told his mentor (and partial father figure), Tony Stark, about his crushes on girls. It wasn’t like Peter was purposefully trying to keep the fact he was bisexual a secret. It was just that Peter usually gave up on his male crushes a lot quicker since they often seemed hopeless. Maybe he should have mentioned his sexuality sooner but it never felt like it had mattered before, until now.

Peter finally had a date. It had been months since his massive failure with Liz aka the vulture's daughter and he hadn’t dated a soul. That was when a handsome boy, named Wade, transferred to his school. Peter had a bit of a hallway crush on him for a week before they started talking. Wade was nerdy, funny, and very weird like Peter so the two became fast friends.

After a month of Peter's crush slowly growing, he worked up the courage to ask Wade out on a date. He expected to get shot down and was just hoping they could remain friends; However, Peter was appalled when Wade happily accepted.

Currently, Wade and Peter had gone on a few dates to varying places and Peter was head over heels. So head over heels that he couldn’t help but gush a little about his upcoming date to Tony Stark.

The two were currently in the Avenger Compound lab where they normally spent their time together whenever the teen visited. Peter had just finished saying how he couldn’t visit next weekend because he was going out with someone.

“Oh? Thats new I didn’t know you were seeing anyone underoos” Tony tried to sound casual but his voice had an edge to it that Peter missed. Tony was pretty protective of the teen, especially in the recent months.

“Yep, this will be our fourth date now, it's going super amazing” Peter chirped in response

Tony hummed, focusing again on what he was tinkering with on his workbench “As long as she treats you well”

That was when Peter realized his mistake. The teen paused, racking his brain for a time that he had (surely) told Mr. Stark he was bi. But, alias, he couldn’t find one because that time didn’t exist.

The moment Peter finished his pondering, Tony had already changed the subject back to what they were working on.

Peter couldn’t very well just blurt out that he was seeing a man, not a woman. He had missed his chance to calmly correct his mentor while minimizing the awkwardness of coming out of the closet.

Oops.

The next time the subject was brought up was the night before Peter’s date. Since his weekend plans with Wade canceled his usual Saturday visit to the Compound, Peter had come over Friday after school. Tony was surprised and clearly happy to see him.

“Hey kid, I didn’t know you would be coming over tonight” Tony said, getting up from his seat on the couch to approach Peter.

Peter smiled and slung his backpack onto the floor like he always did. “Ya I wanted to come over since I couldn't this weekend”

“Right the date, where are you kids gonna go anyways” After giving Peter a quick, but affectionate, pat on the back Tony made his way over to the kitchen to fix Peter some dinner.

While Tony wasn’t known for his cooking ability, he had been practicing regularly the last few months so Peter could have a balanced meal to eat when he came over.

“Oh well um…me and Wade are planning on going to a skating rink” Peter hoped that Tony would pick up on his not so subtle mention of the name. Wade was traditionally only a boy's name from what Peter knew.

It seemed he wasn’t that lucky. “Oh that sounds like fun” Tony replied as he pulled out a pot and started boiling water.

Peter hummed and sat down on one of the bar stools. “Ya me and him aren’t pro skaters but it’ll be nice” That time his message got across.

“Right but at least with your powers it’ll be…” Tony trialled off before his eyes went wide. He stopped what he was doing in the kitchen to turn to Peter.“You and…him?”

Peter fidgeted with his hands before nodding softly. “I realized I had never told you…but um…I actually like men and women. I know that's weird to drop on you all of a sudden like this but I thought it was even weirder to keep it from you…” Peter glanced up to see Tony’s expression which was still one of surprise but without a hint of disappointment.

After a moment Tony chucked his body relaxing, “I probably should have known…you always have liked Ryan Renolds a little more than other boys your age”

Peter's face flushed “I do not!” Despite his protest he smiled softly, letting out a sigh of relief. Maybe he had been a little worried about coming out to his mentor slash the closest person he had to a father.

Tony seemed to pick up on Peter's sigh and his expression softened. “You’ll have to introduce me to your boyfriend. I'm excited to meet him; Although, he should expect the third degree from me”

Peter laughs, “I’ll make sure to let him know”

Tony went back to cooking dinner but after a few moments he spoke again. “Love you Pete” He mumbled with a half cough, but Peter heard.

“Love you too…” Peter replied, his heart flipping in his chest.

After that day Peter and Tony grew even closer than before. A few months later Tony met Wade, and did in fact give him the third degree as promised.
