Chapter 1: Doing Your Job

Chapter Text

You were walking home after another long day of saving lives and helping people. Your shift lasted for about 11 hours before you clocked out.
Not that you were complaining. I mean, sure the work days are long and people got themselves injured in the craziest ways possible. But you were helping them and that is all that really matters to you. And besides that the hospital you worked at paid you well.
So well in fact that you often treated yourself after a long day. Today was definitely one of those days.
But first you wanted to go home and take a shower.

You took the bus, which was surprisingly quiet for a Thursday. Your lips curled in a small smile of relief.
An almost empty bus meant you could put your bag on the seat next to you. This way no creeps could sit there.
It had only happened once, but you were not taking the risk of it happening again.
But if it did?
You would make sure they will never touch anyone again. You would probably deal with them in the same way you dealt with the last guy :). Lets just say you will most likely never see that guy again.

You placed your bag on the window seat and you took the one closer to the middle of the bus.

It didn’t take long before you spaced out.
You thought about all kinds of things. About how you had gotten so far and you were only 24. The things you had to overcome to get here… The things you survived. /Your parents…/
Your older sister across the ocean. Dear 2x2 you missed her so much. But she had her own life and so did you.
You felt your eyes getting a bit watery thinking of these things, so you quickly changed the subject.

Where should you go after you get a shower and in some better clothing?
Dinner time wasn’t for a few more hours.

You already knew where you were going to go.

A sudden ‘ding’ pulled you out of your thoughts. The sound was followed by a female voice “next stop: Waterlily street’’.
“Damm…’’ You thought. “That went faster than expected.’’
You pressed the ‘stop’ button to signify that this was where you wanted to get off. Then when you felt the bus stopping you grabbed your bag and got up.
When the doors opened you threw a quick “thanks” at the bus driver before stepping out.

You were almost home, just a few more streets and you could take that well deserved shower.
It was a nice afternoon. You always liked the end of summer. The weather was neither too cold nor too warm. “Just perfect’’ you whispered to yourself as you took a deep breath in.

_______________

You made your way home safely.
_______________

Your keychains jingled as you opened your front door. The afternoon sun coated everything in your living room in a nice glow.
You made your way towards the kitchen. You emptied your bag on the table and went upstairs. “I will deal with that junk later” you said in your head.

When you had woken up this morning you already knew that you would definitely need a shower when you got home. You silently thanked your past self as you entered the bathroom. In there you saw your preparations from this morning. Soap, clean clothes, a soft towel and your speaker were sitting there on a stool in a nice pile.
You quickly put the soap in the shower and placed your towel on a hook. Your clothing stayed on the stool.
Next you got your phone out of your pocket so you could connect it to your speaker. Listening to music whilst showering was your ideal idea of relaxing. But you didn’t want to waste water so you never showered for too long.
You put on some nice instrumental music and began undressing.

The shower was nice but you really wanted to get out so you could finally go out and treat yourself.
_________

Once you exited the shower you went to your room. Here you styled your hair in a way that said ‘i feel pretty today but i am not very confident’, whatever that means.
After that you moved on to accessories. Most of them were just random pieces of jewelry except for your Spider Lily necklace. /It was the only thing left after the accident./
The pop of red was just what you needed for this outfit.

Speaking of your outfit. You had gone for the small black dress over a white T-shirt. The skirt of your dress ended just above your knees. Short skirts always made you a little
uncomfortable. Because of this you always wore basic black shorts underneath.

And finally there were your shoes. You didn’t own a lot of pairs so you just went with your favorite black boots.

You filled your purse with all the essentials, keys, phone, wallet, wired earphones and your emergency kit. That last one was something you packed just in case someone gets hurt and needs help. Or if someone got their period, you are always prepared for everything.

You checked your bag one last time before stepping towards the door. The charms you had collected over the years jingled slightly as you moved.
/Your mother had always joked that she could hear you coming from a mile away./ Most of the charms were from games or tv shows that you liked.

You stepped outside and closed the door behind you.
And then you made your way towards your destination.
Your feet already knew the way and so did you.
After all, you always went there on Thursdays.

And like every Thursday you took the same 13 minute walk towards
The Sonnellino Casino.

authors note: i know nothing about alcohol and medical stuff so please bear with me lol.
_________________________________________________________________________

You took your usual spot at the bar, the bartender had already spotted you and prepared your usual drink. That's why you came here after all.

You were never a person to like gambling. Losing all your money on a game of chance was not something you wanted to do in your life.

No, you only came here for the alcohol. In your opinion it was the best in the entire city.
And besides the amazing liquor there was also very good entertainment. All kinds of Robloxians visited this place so there was plenty of people watching for you to do.
And from your usual spot you could see everything.

You were quietly sipping your drink when you noticed an argument happening not too far from where you were seated.
It seemed like a customer was arguing with a young staff member. “Yet another sore loser” you thought whilst you rolled your eyes “nothing too interesting”.
You took another sip.

You focused your eyes on something else but an object in the customer's hand caught your attention.

A knife.

A KNIFE.

The customer was holding a knife. And he was ready to attack the young man in front of him.

You quickly drank the last bit of your drink and put glass on the bar.
Your hands immediately went to your purse looking for your phone so you could call the emergency services.

A scream made your head turn back towards the two. The scream came from the staff member. The attacker was already running towards the exit.
You looked at the young man who was now holding his left arm.
He was bleeding.

All of your training came back to you and your instincts took over.
Your bag was already over your shoulder.

You ran towards the guy.

He was wearing a cap and some headphones. All of the staff members had unique headwear. You wondered why that was.

The now bleeding young man was trying to stop the blood from flowing with his other hand.
He was failing.

“HEY!’’ you said, he lifted his head and looked at you. You were now in front of him. “Do you need help?” your voice sounded worried.
“Can you help?’’ he asked. You could tell he was trying to hide his panic.
“Yes, I work in a hospital and I know how to deal with stuff like this.’’ He looked at you and something in him seemed to calm a little bit.
“Can I see it?’’ you asked, gesturing towards his left arm. “Oh, um sure.’’ He took his right hand off his left under arm and showed it to you.

You gently took his arm, you tried not to touch the wound.
One look and you already knew what needed to happen. You have seen this countless times at your job.
“Yeah this needs stitches, we need to get you to a hospital.” You held his left hand gently in front of you with your right one. Your other hand was already reaching for your phone.
“WAIT!’’ he said loudly as he grabbed your free arm. “Please no hospitals” he slowly let go of your arm, staining it with his blood.

'Seriously? You are actively bleeding out and you don’t want to go to the hospital?’ You thought. You wanted to ask him why but you had learned not to question these kinds of things.
Fine if he doesn't want to go then you will do it yourself.
Why? Because you believed everyone had rights to medical care.

“Okay…” you said.
“Okay what?’’
“I will do it myself.”
He was quiet.
“Are you sure? You don't even know me. I am sure i can fix this myse…’’
“NO, I am not letting you bleed out whilst I know I could have done something.’’

He looked at you.
Wait, was he… scared?
“I literally stitch people up for a living, you have nothing to worry about.’’
The guy seemed calmer after hearing that.
“Fine, I will let you help me.” “Let's go somewhere a bit more private, I am staining the carpet.”
Your head turned downwards. Yeah… you guys should probably move somewhere else.

You let go of his arm and followed him.

You were now walking next to him in a long corridor. It was silent until he spoke. “May I know who is helping me?’’

Ah right you guys didn’t know eachothers names.
“You can call me (name)’’ “Now, may I know who I'm helping?’’
“Contractee.’’
You gave him a small reassuring smile “Well Contractee, I promise you that your in good hands.’’
He tried to smile back but you could tell that he was in a lot of pain.

The two of you entered a room. By the looks of it, this space was probably the break room.
There was a small kitchen with a stove and sink. In the middle of the room was a table with a surprisingly small amount of chairs around it. ‘Only five chairs? Didn’t the casino have like 20 plus employees?’

“Could you please go and sit on the table whilst I look for towels?” you asked. He nodded and walked over to the table to sit on it.
You went to look in the cabinet under the sink. ‘Everyone places towels under their sink.’ 'Right?'
Lucky for you, you were correct. You grabbed a few and turned back towards Contractee.
You held out one of the towels towards him “Here, hold this against the wound while I prepare my stuff.” He took it and did exactly what you told him to do.
He observed you as you took out your small looking med kit. "What's that?’’ “This…” you placed your bag on the table “...is my emergency med kit.’’ He stared at the teal pencil case looking thingy in your hand. “Thats actually pretty handy.’’ Contractee looked back at his arm.

You opened the kit and looked for anything that you could possibly use in this situation. Pretty quickly you found what you were looking for, a sterile needle and some thread meant for stitching wounds. The only thing you didn't carry with you were bandages. You frowned, how could you possibly forget such an important thing?

“Do you guys have any medical stuff of your own?’’
“Yeah, the top cupboard furthest to the right.’’ You turned to look there. “Why do you ask?”
“Well…” you opened the wooden cabinet and smiled when you saw a med kit. “I don’t carry everything on my person, obviously, so I want to see if there is anything better I can use than just my stuff.’’
“Because, the better the medical supplies…’’ you took the box and turned back to place it on the table. “...the better both of our experiences will be.’’

You opened the box. Perfect, there were enough bandages for at least five arms.

You placed everything on the table next to Contractee.

Before you started you made sure everything was clean and that your hair was in a ponytail.

“Now, I don't have any painkillers so you are probably going to feel a lot.” You were honest with him, you had to prepare him for the worst. You knew that this could hurt.
Contractee looked at you, the two of you made eye contact. “How bad will it be?’’
“I can't tell you, everyone experiences pain differently.’’ The young man, who by the way couldn't be any older than 25, stared at you.
Then you remembered something else in your emergency kit.
“I can give you my stress ball, squeezing something might help a little bit.’’
"I'd like that.” His shoulders, which were very tense, dropped slightly.
You handed him your purple stress ball, which he took with his right hand.

You took your needle and tread.

Before you actually started your work you looked him in the eyes once more “It's very important that you keep your arm as still as possible.’’ “The more movement the harder this will be for the both of us, understood?” He nodded.

You placed the blood stained towel next to him and began carefully stitching his wound.
____________________

You were very concentrated on your work. It was completely quiet in the room, only the ticking from a clock could be heard.
Contractee was looking at you and your hands the whole time. You didn't really care, you were used to working under pressure.
Every time when Contractee silently winced in pain you would whisper an apology. From the corner of your vision you could see that he was squeezing your purple ball like it owed him money.

You were so focused that you didn’t even notice that someone new had entered the room.
“Contractee, what is going on in here?’’ A male voice from behind you spoke.
You were too concentrated on your work to really hear it.
Contractee however, did notice the new presence behind you. “Oh, hey Capo” he said with a smile.
“Contractee…” the deeper voice said “who is this?”
“I'll tell you later, can you be quiet now?’’ “She is really focused and I don't want her to lose concentration.’’ At the mention of you, you finally realised that there was no longer one other person in the room. You wanted to see who this was, but you were almost done.
You would just acknowledge him when you were done stitching.
“Focussed on what?” Said the newcomer, ‘Capo’, whilst stepping towards the two of you.
Contractee didn't answer, he just gestured towards his injured arm using his good one.
“What happened?’’
“I SAID, I will tell you later once she is done.” Contractee whisper yelled.
‘Capo’ finally got the hint that he needed to be silent. He took a chair and sat on it about 60 centimeters (2 feet) away from Contractee’s arm.

GREAT now two pairs of eyes were silently watching you. But again, you worked well under pressure.
‘Almost done’ you told yourself.

_____________
You were done, you took your scissors out of your med kit and cut off the loose end of the thread.
You sighed “there, that was the hard bit.’’ You made eye contact with Contractee.
“So what happens now?” He asked you. The death grip he had on your stress ball was almost fully gone.
“I clean your arm and bandage you up” you said whilst you threw away the extra tread.
“I promise that the most painful part is over.”
He took a deep breath in and out “Oh thank 2x2.”
“I’m sorry” you said as you prepared to start cleaning his arm “I really wish I could have made that less painful.” He didn't reply.
“Now, lets get rid off all this blood.’’

The stranger from earlier was looking at your work. “Those are really well done, are you a doctor?’’ he asked you as you finished cleaning.
“Yep, I work at Gigabyte hospital as one of their specialists on bullet and knife wounds.” You were now starting to bandage Contractee up, your hands moved quickly. You continued “I’d say Contractee here was very lucky that I went out for a drink today.’’
“WAIT, you had alcohol and you were still able to stitch me up?”
You looked at him for a moment “do i look drunk to you?” He said nothing.
“Exactly” his arm was now fully wrapped up. “I only had one drink, it would have taken a lot more to get me under the influence.”

It was quiet once more.
FINALLY you were done.

“Are you going to introduce yourself to me?” The stranger said.

You looked at the man as you were finally able to get a good look at him.
He was probably in his late 20s or early 30s. He was completely bald and he had a pair of sunglasses on his nose. The man was also way taller than you, not to mention that he looked very strong.
He was definitely a college from Contractee by the looks of it.

“(name)” you held out your hand for him to shake, it was a thing you always did when meeting new people.
He accepted the handshake “Caporegime.” “Nice to meet you” you said with a small smile.

The two of you let go of each other.
“What do you want (name)?”
“Huh?” Why was he asking you this?
“I asked, what do you want?” His voice became a bit more stern.
“Yeah I heard you the first time, just why are you asking me this? I don't want anything.”
He looked at you and raised an eyebrow “so you're telling me that you would help a complete stranger without wanting anything in return.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Wait, did he think you only helped Contractee for your own gain?

“Because everyone has the right to medical care, no matter who they are or what they have done.” He didn’t look convinced.
“I don't care if I get paid for my work, all I want to do is help people who need it.”
His expression shifted. "Okay."
‘?’
“I believe you.”
You let out a breath you didn't know you were holding, ‘good’ you thought.
“That’s good?” “I think.”

You turned back towards Contractee “I am now going to explain to you how to take care of your wound, okay?” He nodded.

For the next 10 minutes you explained everything to him. What painkillers were recommended, that he should rest, and of course when he should rebandage his arm.
Caporegime offered to help Contractee with that which you thought was sweet.

After you were done speaking you looked at the two of them “You two got that?”
“Yes” both of them said.
“Okay, well I guess that's my job done.” Whilst you were talking you had cleaned up all of the medical supplies.

You flung your bag over your shoulders “What time is it?” You looked at the clock on the wall
‘8:39’. Welp, there goes your time to make dinner.
You sighed “Looks like it's going to be pizza.”
“What do you mean by that?” Contractee asked.
“Oh…” you hadn't realised that you were thinking aloud “uh, I haven't had dinner yet, and it's quite late to start cooking now, so it's best if I just pick up some pizza on my way home.”
“Ah, that makes sense.”

“Would you like me to bring you to the exit?” Caporegime asked.
“Yeah that would be nice.”

Before the two of you left the room you looked at Contractee one last time. “Please be careful with your arm, it would be a shame if all my hard work got ruined.”
“I promise.” “Oh and uh (name)?”
“Yes?”
“Thank you, I don't know what would have happened if you hadn't shown up.”
You smiled at him, “I'm just doing my job.”

You turned around and followed Caporegime back towards the casino part of the building.
When you arrived there you thanked him for showing you the way. He just nodded. ‘Not a man of many words.’ You thought to yourself.

You quickly paid for your drink.
Then, you left the building. You were immediately greeted by the warm orange glow of the sun setting.

Your stomach growled. ‘Man I'm starving.’
“Lets get that pizza” you whispered to no one.
Luckily there was a pizza place on your way home.

You walked away, leaving the casino behind you, unaware that you still had blood on you.

Caporegime watched you leave before going back to Contractee.
Yeah, he did not trust you at all. After he was done questioning Contractee he would probably need to call his boss to let him know what had happened.
