Lazy Afternoons

Summary:

Skye and Jett watch the sunset and enjoy some ice cream together. It's totally not a date.

Notes:

Happy belated birthday to my dear friend, nobuu! <3

Here's some food for the lovers of Junglestorm. <33

Work Text:

The sunset in the distance painted the sky with hues of serene violet, warm rose, and uplifting yellow, all surrounding the golden sun that was slowly disappearing from the horizon. Skye sat on the ground, legs spread over the grass and she had even kicked her shoes off, something that greatly amused Jett. She said something about connecting with the earth through the ground- how it calmed her nerves before the evening and helped her get much better sleep at night.

Jett would have tried it, but the thought of potential bugs crawling up her leg made the idea much less appealing. She slept just fine anyway.

The view before them was beautiful, however she just couldn’t stop herself from sneaking peeks at Skye as the two of them finished off the popsicles they picked up from a nearby ice cream shop. Jett often visited with some of the other agents; She visited often enough to have tried every flavor of ice cream and popsicle they had to offer. Jett pridefully proclaimed herself an expert when Skye couldn’t decide what she wanted and eventually convinced her to try the blueberry matcha one.

Not without some back and forth to convince her to come in the first place. Skye jokingly asked Jett if this was some sort of date, and Jett didn’t answer directly- instead telling Skye it was whatever she wanted it to be. To that, she laughed: The kind of hearty laugh where she would snort, then tell Jett to “piss off”. It was brash, maybe even rude, but Jett honestly loved when she could make Skye laugh like that. As gawky as it was, it was adorable.

Of course, she would never admit that to anybody. It was hard enough to just admit it to herself.

“I gotta say,” Skye looked up at Jett with widened eyes and a grin. “I’m glad you brought me out here. The view’s a beaut! Oh! The ice cream was great too.”

“Glad you like it.” Jett replied nonchalantly, finishing off her cinnamon horchata ice cream. “I told you you could trust me.”

“I should’ve never doubted ya, girlie! You always know the best places to get some grub.”

Jett gave her a cocky smirk and Skye rolled her eyes with a “tch”. Then Skye stood, arms stretching up and out as she walked, still barefoot, to a nearby trash bin to toss her stick. Jett did the same shortly after and the two were just as they started: Skye stretched on the grass and Jett now stood with her hands in her pockets. Jett watched the purple clouds in the sky, as the sun sank even lower, her own eyes dropping to Skye again before sighing and joining her in the grass.

She could deal with potential ants if it meant being closer to her.

“So what made you ask only me to come out here? Nobody else available?”

That question hit Jett like a stray bullet she had failed to dodge. It may not have hurt, but she froze, uncertain of how to answer. It wasn’t a date, but it wasn’t as though nobody else was available. At the same time, she’s gone out one on one with other agents, though that wasn’t often. She loved to hang out in groups, and she even would invite Skye often. That, and she would hang out one on one with Neon, or Phoenix, maybe even Clove sometimes.

Yet, she never would watch sunsets with them, or sit in silence next to them simply enjoying their company. No, she would be initiating playful banter any time the silence dragged on a little too long, or finding something exciting to fill the time with them. Something about this outing with Skye did feel a little more intimate than just two friends hanging out.

That wasn’t her plan. It just happened. So she smirked.

“Maybe I thought you needed to chill out.”

Skye scoffed, lightly and playfully punching Jett’s arm.. “Me? You’re the one who’s been pestering me more than usual lately!”

“Pestering?” Jett repeated in a tone that teetered on condescending. “So you have been crabby.”

“Not at all, mate.” Skye smiled at her. “If anything, I find it funny.”

“You’re funny.”

“Oh, real mature.” Skye ruffled Jett’s hair, which made the duelist groan. She would have done it back, except Skye’s hair was always wild as is. Not in a way that made her look unkempt or lazy, but in a way that suited her free spirit. Skye couldn’t be tamed, and her hair reflected that.

So instead Jett swiped her headband swiftly, ready to dash away with it, but not before Skye’s strong grip held her other wrist. With all her might, she tried to free herself and make a break for it, but who was she kidding? She could outrun Skye, that was a given and they both knew that, but in a battle of strength alone? Skye would always best her. Even Jett, as prideful as she could be, couldn’t deny that.

Still, she tried and it only ended with her pinned to the ground, Skye’s hands around both of her wrists and both of her knees pressed against the sides of her hips. Above her, Skye wore a cocky grin with a fierce, playful glint in her eyes that made Jett’s heart skip a beat. From this angle, Skye looked…

She didn’t dare complete that thought.

“I’ll be taking that back, thank you.”

“What’s the magic word?” Jett teased.

“Get fucked, Sunny.”

Jett laughed, releasing her grip on the green fabric so Skye could take it back, and she wasted no time in tying it back around her head before she got off of Jett. Oddly enough, despite how short of a timespan it was, she missed the contact already. She always did, but this time it hit her.

All those times she would bicker with Skye and escalate it to roughhousing, which Skye never backed down on. How often she would hip check Skye as she walked past, just for Skye to do it back with a challenging glance and more force. There were also the times Skye would commend her and pull Jett into a warm, tight hug that was arguably- no, the best hugs Jett had received from anyone. Sometimes, Jett would try to show off just so Skye would hug her.

She liked Skye’s attention, her touch, her quips.

She liked Skye.

The way Skye’s presence brought life with her, how she knew such niche information with great depth, how she loved nature and animals. Jett found her so fascinating and loved listening to her talk. She enjoyed joining Skye on her morning runs, often begging Skye to show her some of the summons she used less often, yet Skye loved each of them equally. She liked the way the corners of Skye’s lips curled when she smiled, and seeing that cute little gap in her front teeth.

Her time with Skye was never boring. In fact, it was always exciting, always fun, even if what they were doing was simple. Even when it was as simple as eating ice cream at a park.

There she was, gazing at Skye again, but this time with intention.

“Hey Kirra?”

The initiator looked at her curiously. “All good?”

“There’s just one thing. Come closer.”

For a moment she looked inquisitive, brows furrowing as she looked over Jett, but she did move closer. Jett froze, staring at Skye with a racing heart as the realization of her feelings settled in. She couldn’t help but laugh a little, acting before she started to overthink it.

Jett fully closed the distance, cupping Skye’s cheek as she gave her a soft kiss, and when she pulled away, Skye’s look of curiosity was replaced with one of shock. Though it didn’t last long as she started to laugh herself.

“Sunny? Is this a joke, or… are you serious?” She asked, which felt like an arrow to Jett’s heart.

That wasn’t a rejection… was it?

“Hm, that depends.” Jett replied coolly, slipping both of her hands into her jacket pockets. “Did you like it?”

“I might have.” Skye answered, “That depends on if you meant it. So, did ya?”

There was that adorable tooth gap, this time paired with a soft gaze. Jett could have melted right there, but instead of becoming a puddle of her own feelings, she kissed Skye’s cheek, unable to stop herself from smirking when Skye giggled.

“Does that answer your question, Kirra?”

“Oh. Absolutely.”
