Work Text:
Looking out towards the desert with his binoculars, Henery Hawk searched for his next chicken. All he saw was sand, cacti, more sand, and the occasional tumbleweed (which he was almost certain were chickens in disguise). Henery was about to give up his search and move on back to his familiar hunting ground at Foghorn's farm, until he saw it: a large bluish-purple chicken that sped across a long windy road stretching across the desert.
Score!
He smirked as he put his binoculars away. It was a fast chicken, so he’d need a fast plan…
A rope!
He’d tie a snare rope near the tree and catch the chicken when it ran past. Then it would be dinner time! Grabbing some rope, Henery began looking around for a tree to tie it to.
It took a while but he finally found the perfect tree.. He set the trap and waited.
And waited.
And waited some more.
After about ten minutes he was getting annoyed.
“Where was this stupid chicken?!,” he thought angrily.
He looked around before hearing an explosion in the distance. This desert had random explosions? He heard the sound of running getting closer and closer! He got the rope ready to catch his prey when it sped right past snapping the rope as if it wasn’t even there.
…okay this was gonna be harder than he thought.
He abandoned the rope trap and followed after the chicken to see where it would be going next. A figure approached the broken rope, picking it up in confusion…
Whose trap does this belong to?
Henery Hawk had to see where the chicken would go next, maybe he could get him with a new rope trap? Or lasso it? He saw the blur of blue and purple rushing on the road. He saw ahead a plate of bird seeds. Wait where’d that come from? He saw the bird stop, this was his chance! He saw him peck at the seeds, grabbing the rope again, he could grab him! He snuck over to where the chicken was eating, swinging the rope around like a lasso before tossing it in the direction of the bird.
The bird took two steps to the left as the rope just caught onto a rock. He made a weird sound, almost like beeping, before running away once again, another attempt foiled…
Henery was running out of patience and ideas.
The rope failed again?! How did it fail?!”
He was getting mad. He wanted that chicken, but how was he gonna grab him?!
He sat down in a huff trying to think what could work. He had to get creative. He walked around the desert seeing the tracks left by the chicken and thought about how he never saw a chicken like him before. He seemed to be the only one around, so what if he never saw another chicken like him before? An idea formed in his head at that moment. He rubbed his wings together while grinning evilly. He was gonna be eating some fast purple chicken tonight, alright!
He just needed to set up one more little trap.
A few hours had passed, night was on the horizon as Roadrunner stretched his legs near the side of a cliff to see the sunset. He had fun today playing chase with Wile E! Wile E always knew how to make their little game of chase so much fun! He got so close today too! He was about to leave to go find his nest when he heard sniffling. He turned around seeing a small creature with a blanket around him approaching scared.
“E-excuse me? I-I’m lost and can’t find my home…would you help me? I lived in a cave with two cactuses in front," the little chick said, whimpering sadly. Roadrunner looked at the brown bird confused, he wasn’t from around here, that was for sure. Roadrunner wasn’t sure how much he could help, but could he leave a little kid all alone? He held up a sign smiling at the chick.
Don’t cry, little guy! I’ll help you okay?
“You will?! Thank you Mr. Chicken!,” The kid exclaimed.
Roadrunner cocked his head confused, he wasn’t a chicken, this kid must be a toddler or something maybe. He lowered his body to the ground in order for the kid to hop on, the fastest way to get anywhere was via the Roadrunner express! Once the bird got on his back he held up another sign.
Hold on tight okay? I’ll find that cave okay?
The bird nodded his head as Roadrunner took off the bird holding onto his neck. From the distance Wile E watched. Who was that little bird…? He didn’t look like a Roadrunner. He almost looked like…
Wait, was that a Hawk?!
Wile E didn’t like the looks of this as he started to follow them, just in case this hawk tried something to his roadrunner…
I mean the Roadrunner.
After running around a bit, Roadrunner finally found the cave the bird told him about. He stopped in front of it letting the kid down.
Is this it?
“Yes! Thank you Mr. Chicken!” The bird said. “Oh before you go I need help with something else! There’s this bag of birdseed that is on a shelf that’s too high for little me to reach. Could you please grab it for me? Then you can go, I won't bother you anymore!” He sweetly said, luring the Roadrunner in a false sense of security. The bird gave a beep in response, walking into the cave. It was pretty dark, but the light helped him see what the bird wanted. He saw the bag on a shelf walking to it. He reached up pulling it down, when he saw it had some rope tied around it?
Before he could question it, he was suddenly scooped up in a net, dropping the bag on the ground. The bird started beeping like crazy.
What’s going on?!
He saw the kid walk into the light of the cave, an evil smirk on his face.
“Got you now, chicken.” He said.
Wile E. was worried. Why was he worried? He lost Roadrunner. He couldn’t find the nuisance anywhere after he ran off with the bird of prey! He had to keep looking though, if that bird hurt a single feather on roadrunner’s head he swore he’d-
“Meep! Meeep!!!”
He heard the sounds of a distressed meep. Only one bird made those noises and they sounded scared.
Oh HELL no!
No one makes HIS Roadrunner scared! He quickly ran, following the noises of the bird. He crept into the cave entrance seeing a sight he could only wish to do himself.
The Roadrunner was tied to a large rotisserie, a small fire forming under him. He was struggling while meeping the whole time, trying to get out of the ropes that bound him. Feathers scattered around the fire, he was actually scared, losing feathers from stress.
Wile E was going to make that hawk PAY for this!!
He looked around for the little shit before seeing him with a book about cooking chicken. He was about to approach Roadrunner when the hawk turned back around, walking over to Roadrunner annoyed.
“Shut up! You’re so loud!” He said annoyed, shoving an apple into the mouth of the bird to silence him temporarily.
He started turning the rotisserie, chuckling to himself about how delicious this chicken was gonna be. Wile E looked through his metaphorical pockets.
He had to save Roadrunner now!
He pulled out a magnetic glove, some rocket skates, dynamite, and a bunch of broken useless things ACME made. None of these worked before so why would they now?! He needed another way! He looked around the cave while the bird was distracted before seeing some rope discarded in the corner.
Perfect.
Wile E quickly grabbed the rope making a snare before putting it on the ground by the hawk’s cookbook. He went back to his hiding place waiting for when the bird would go back to his book. It only took a few moments before the bird stepped on his trap, sending him flying up into the ceiling hanging by his feet.
“What the?! What’s the big idea?!,” he shouted trying to get free.
Wile E emerged from his hiding place, a look of anger on his face. He turned to where Roadrunner was being held, his expression softening as he quickly went to put the fire out, taking the apple out of the bird’s beak, earning a very happy meep from him.
“Hey! Paws off my chicken! I caught him fair and square!,” he yelled.
Wile E turned back to him, giving the chicken hawk a death glare before holding up a sign.
MINE.
The hawk growled annoyed, how dare this stupid ugly furry chicken take his prey! He shouted profanities no child should know as Wile E. got annoyed. He flipped his sign over.
If I ever catch you trying to hurt my Roadrunner again I will eat you without a second thought. Understand, you pest.
Henery looked at Wile E. seeing the coyote’s sharp teeth when he made that threat. He nodded nervously, gulping. Wile E turned back to Roadrunner releasing him from the ropes. He helped the bird up only for him to stumble into Wile E’s arms. He let out a pained Meep, motioning to his leg. Wile E rolled his eyes before picking the bird up gently in his arms. He walked out of the cave with him, leaning the chickenhawk to hang in his cave.
“…HEY! LET ME DOWN! … THIS WAS DUMB. IM GOING BACK TO DA FARM!”
Wile E carried Roadrunner back to familiar territory. If anyone saw them like this they’d be confused. Why would he take Roadrunner back to his cave to eat? He had him right where he wanted him!
To Wile E. it was a matter of principles. He didn’t catch Roadrunner; he saved him from another predator. If he ate the Roadrunner now it wouldn’t taste as good. His father always said, “Catching your own prey makes it taste all the more sweet.” This wasn’t how he wanted to catch Roadrunner.
He needed to earn the victory.
Lost in his own thoughts he didn’t even notice the bird staring at him for the last few minutes. He stopped putting the bird down on a rock to sit while grabbing some bandages from his pocket to wrap his injury. He held up a sign.
Why are you staring at me?
Because you saved me :3
Shut up and give me your leg, I'll wrap it.
Oh no need. It’s not hurt :3
Huh?
I just wanted you to carry me :3
WHY?!
Because that’s how the stories go :3 The knight rescues the prince and carries him to safety :3
Wile E. just stared at the bird, the dumb smile on his face as he demonstrated he was fine, running circles around him. Before he left though, he felt the bird kiss his cheek. He turned a bright red.
And the prince rewards the knight with a kiss :3
Wile E saw the blush on Roadrunner’s beak, trying to make the blush on his own face go away. Roadrunner smiled at him, holding up one more sign.
Thank you for saving me. See you tomorrow :3
He let out one more meep before sticking his tongue out, running away like he always did. Wile E just stood there dumbfounded…he looked down seeing a feather on the ground. He picked it up holding it close as he thought to himself.
Yeah…see you tomorrow.
