Work Text:
"You're breathing like you've just run a marathon, but you haven't moved an inch," JD observes, his voice cutting through the sterile hum of the surgical lounge.
Christopher Turk sits frozen in a leather chair, his new promotion—Chief of Surgery—hanging around his neck in the form of a heavy, gold-plated badge. He is masking it well; the smile is wide, the posture is arrogant, the laughter is loud. But JD sees the way Turk’s thumbs are digging into his own thighs, the way his chest is tight and shallow, as if the air in the room has turned to lead. The zeal that usually radiates off Turk—the electric, humming passion for the craft—has vanished, replaced by a hollow, echoing fatigue.
JD steps into his space, the heat of the lounge pressing against them. He reaches out, his fingers brushing the pulse point of Turk’s wrist. It’s erratic, thrumming with a frantic, trapped energy.
"It's just the stress, man," Turk lies, though his voice is raw, scraping against his throat.
"You're starving, Chris. Not for food, but for the fight," JD murmurs, stepping closer until their scrubs graze. He can smell the metallic tang of the OR and the scent of old coffee. He presses a hand flat against Turk’s sternum, feeling the heart hammering against the ribs—a frantic, starving animal.
Turk lets out a shuddering breath, his shoulders finally collapsing. The mask doesn't just slip; it shatters. He leans forward, forehead crashing against JD’s shoulder with a heavy thud. "I don't feel it anymore," he whispers, the admission sounding like a wound opening.
JD doesn't offer a platitude. Instead, he grips the back of Turk's neck, his thumb massaging the knotted muscle there. He feels the heat radiating off Turk's skin, the desperate, physical need to be seen. He holds him there, anchoring him to the floor, letting the silence stretch until the only thing left is the sound of two men breathing in the dark, fighting the crushing weight of a victory that feels like a loss.
