Goldfinger

Summary:

Lieutenant Commander Jadzia Dax and Dr. Julian Bashir engage with problematic media.

Notes:

This is based on an old shitpost I made on tumblr. I don’t like James Bond very much.

Work Text:

"... and that's why they call it 'popcorn,'" said Bashir.

"Whatever it is," said Jadzia, "I can't stop eating it."

The popcorn, as she had been informed, was traditional, and quite delicious. But there would be time to discuss that later -- meanwhile, Jadzia was totally engrossed in the film. Even considering the archaic obscelencence of the medium, it It was a bombastic and libidinal explosion of the highly localized Earth culture that had produced it, decades before even the Dax symbiote had been born on Trillius Prime. It was utterly absurd, and totally enthralling. It was so utterly alien to her, and an entirely new experience. Jadzia didn't even notice that her companion was watching her face more than he was watching the screen.

"It's actually been cultivated on earth for thousands of years," said Bashir. "You see, on the American continents, they--"

"Julian, shush!" said Jadzia. "I'm trying to watch."

"Right," said Bashir. "Of course. I understand completely. From now on, I'll be completely silent, and just let the--"

"Hang on," said Jadzia. "Did James Bond just rape that woman?"

"What?" said Bashir. "No, no! Not at all! Pussy Galore just lost the fight, that's all."

"I know, I was watching it too," said Jadzia. "He overpowered her."

"That isn't what happened at all!" said Bashir. "Believe me, I've watched this one about a dozen times. Computer, rewind 30 seconds."

"Look!" said Jadzia. "There he goes again."

"No, no, no, this is probably just another cross cultural misunderstanding. Things are different with human men. You see, look there, she's only struggling in the beginning, until she realizes that she's... that she's been..."

"Yes?" said Jadzia. "You were saying?"

"Oh, my god," said Bashir. "You're right. This is... well, this is... Jadzia, I'm so sorry. Would you like me to turn it off?"

"Of course not! Are you kidding?" said Jadzia. "It's just starting to get good!"

Bashir's voice got caught in his throat. Jadzia felt a little sorry him, but it was all for the best. After all, he didn't speak another word until after the finale. Jadzia enjoyed giving the rest of the film her full attention.
