From the start

Summary:

Kenma’s favorite day of the week is Sunday

Notes:

This is inspired by Laufey’s From the Start, but I listened to both her version and Good kid’s version while writing it. 🐈is Kenma’s pov and 🐈‍⬛is Kuroo’s pov.
Sorry in advance for all the typo/grammar misuse, English is not my first language and I am too cringed to ask my friends to beta read it for me lol
Anyway, please enjoy~

Work Text:

🐈

Sunday is always the best, at least for Kenma.

His Sunday routine is simple. After his weekly Saturday long stream, he could sleep in and when he finally decided to get out of his bed, he will be greeted with brunch prepared by Kuroo Testuro. The two would have the food together and have a nice long chat about the week they had(more like kuroo chat, kenma listen). After that they would put on a movie and cuddle on the sofa, most of the time this would turn into a nap for Kuroo. Kenma would never wake him up, instead he would embrace the quiet time and order take outs for both of them as dinner. After dinner they would take a shower and went back to their own room and spend the rest of the night.

Can this routine be better for Kenma? Lately Kenma realized there may be one. The better version would include Kuroo kissing his mouth instead of his forehead, Kuroo saying I love you, and instead of going back to their own room, they would share the same bed at night.

But this would never happens, not in a million years. Because Kenma would never tell Kuroo his newly developed feeling, never in a million years. This new tingly feeling inside Kenma’s stomach makes him became quieter and quieter around Kuroo when there’s no one else around. Normally Kuroo would pick this weird behavior by Kenma quite speedily but he has not mentioned it for even once. So Kenma takes this as a sign, a sign that Kuroo is not interested in him. This discovery is a little painful, but Kenma is thankful that they can at least still have their little Sunday routine together and they are still best friends. This is enough, that’s what he told himself. As long as Kenma doesn’t look into Kuroo’s eyes when they are together to remind himself that Kuroo doesn’t feel the same.

🐈

This should be a perfect Sunday as usual. Everything was going nice, until things get crumbled.

Kenma 100% Zelda Tears of the Kingdom during the stream last night, he finally find all of the Korok seeds and the accomplished feeling is impeccable. This leads to a high-quality dreamless sleep which made him wakes up at 9 o’clock and felt energized (rare occasion indeed). When he get out of bed, he was greeted with the smell of apple pie. He pressed down his excitement and went to brush his teeth. When he’s finally ready, Kuroo was standing at the kitchen counter drinking his tea. Kuroo looks a little surprised since Kenma rarely wakes up this early but happily served him a slice of the apple pie. It’s from Kenma’s favorite bakery and it’s still the perfect temperature.

“Is this enough to convince you to wake up earlier in the future?” Kuroo let out a small chuckle when he saw Kenma finished his pie in record time and sipped on his tea.

“Well I still need coffee to function. “ Kenma tried his best to ignore the cute smirk on Kuroo’s face and lowered his head to hide his blushing face. He hated to admit it but Kuroo looks really hot in his tight tshirt with sweatpants while wearing glasses.

“Hmmm, a nice morning do require a good coffee.” Kuroo put down his mug on the counter, “Since you are up this early, why don’t we go to the really nice coffee place near the park? The barista told me they have a new drink called apple latte and people speaks highly of it. ”

Kenma nodded as his answer, they both quickly put on their shoes and left the house.

Normally when they are out together, Kenma would bring out his phone to play some game. But today he decided to embrace the nice walk without the distraction. The walk is exceptional, weather was sunny but not too hot, Kenma embraces the autumn breeze but at the same time he realized the awkward silence. He tried to open his mouth to bring a topic up but when he stole a glance at Kuroo, he decided not to speak.

Kuroo was not looking at him, he has a sweet smile on his face, a smile that means he’s in love. The smile makes Kenma’s heart warm and fluffy, though his stomach turned in a weird way. He knew it’s he's jealous, so he kept his mouth shut and the rest of their walk remained in silence.

🐈

When both of them walked into the cafe, there was barely any customers. Kenma saw the barista girl’s eyes beamed when she spot them walking in.

“Long time no see!” She greeted excitedly when they reached the counter and flashed a really friendly smile to Kuroo while asking “Is the usual fine?”

Kuroo chuckled a bit at the girls question but shakes his head as an answer, “No, I think we are gonna try something new today. Right, Kenma?”

Kenma shakes as a scared kitten when being called his name, but he still nodded his head. “I heard there’s a new drink called the apple latte, and I would like that. Also could you do it cold but with less ice?“

“We can do that. “ The barista nodded.

“I will have the same thing, but I’m fine with normal ice. “ Kenma felt Kuroo leaned on his shoulder and since they are so close together, Kenma can feel Kuroo’s heartbeat. It is a little bit faster than usual, and Kenma wondered whether it’s the barista making him nervous.

“That will be 12 dollars. Do you guys want to have here or take away?”

“Take away please. “ Kenma answered quickly and tapped his card on the machine before Kuroo even reacted.

“Kenma! I thought we are going to have the coffee here! And also stop paying everything for me! “ Kuroo protested above him, “I can’t believe I’m letting someone younger treating me all the time. “

“Maybe I want to be your sugar daddy. “ Kenma replied without any expression, “also the weather is nice so I wanna have the coffee in the park.”

“Oh daddy you are always so generous and spoil me to rotten. “ Kuroo kissed Kenma’s cheek dramatically, “Also I can’t believe you finally decided to embrace the nature! Am I finally qualified to be seen together with daddy in the outside world now?”

Kenma tried his best not to blush from the kiss and the words. Thankfully, no one in the cafe bat an eye on their weird conversation or noticed Kenma’s faint blush on his face. The barista finished making their order quickly and they thanked her and left the cafe.

They found a bench with an amazing view of the lake in the park and drank their coffee silently. The apple latte is nice, Kenma thought to himself, Kuroo is right, they should do this more often. Sipping the drink, Kenma can feel himself relaxed under the sunshine.

“You know you really looked like a kitten sometimes. “ Kenma felt Kuroo patting his head while talking. “Especially when you are relaxed like this.”

Normally Kenma would try to escape Kuroo’s petting and protest him by saying “I’m not your pet!” But today Kuroo’s touch feels really nice, so Kenma decided to let Kuroo have his moment.

Kuroo kept his movement for a bit and when he finally moved away, Kenma protested it by looking up into his eyes.

“Wow you are extra clingy today, does my touch feel that good?” Kuroo said it like a complaint but Kenma can tell Kuroo also enjoyed it. In Kuroo’s eyes, there’s a desire that Kenma can’t quite digest. The taller boy’s golden eyes have some kind of magic, Kenma feels like every time he looks at it, he would be lured in and drowned in it. So Kenma quickly moved his eyes to look at somewhere else and pretend he was busy drinking his coffee.

Kenma want this moment to last a bit longer.

🐈

The afternoon went quickly, they watched some movies but no one fall asleep this time so they just made some dinner and call it a day.

Kenma lied in the bed mindlessly scrolling through his phone to check the latest game news and decided maybe he should go to bed early tonight. He waked up earlier than usual so he’s a bit tired. Forced himself to use all his energy to get up from his comfy bed, Kenma put his phone back in his pocket and thinks about next week's schedule.

That’s when he overheard Kuroo’s phone call.

In Kenma’s defense, he was not trying to eavesdrop. But he can’t not pay attention when he heard his best friend dramatically yelling in lowercases to the phone along the line “I’m gonna die one day. I can’t do this anymore. “

Because of this line, Kenma decided to stay and listen to the conversation. He want to take care of his friend, to make sure he’s doing alright.

The people on the other line sounds a bit muffled but Kenma can still tell what they are staying, and within a few seconds Kenma recognized it’s Yaku. Yaku said something like “You deserve it, I told you a million times to just go confess and be honest. “

“ I can’t!” Kuroo replied, “You don’t get it, you don’t see it with your own eyes that’s why you can say it. Also I don’t wanna ruin what we already have. Even they feel the same, I don’t think I deserved their love. You know how perfect they are. “

“These are just excuses. You still flirt right? But by having coffee? How uncreative. ” Oh, so this is about Kuroo’s crush. Kenma can feel his heart ache, Kuroo must been in love with the barista.

“Well, what else can I do? I should just kiss him? You know I really tried, but it didn’t work that way. I can’t even engage a proper eye contact lately and we have less and less conversation. I wonder whether my feelings have been figured out already, and it’s scary. Maybe I have already fuckeed everything up. Staying like this is the best I can do. “ Kenma want to leave now, he doesn’t want to know how much Kuroo is in love with someone else.

“That’s not fair to Kenma you know. “ Yaku’s voice sounds a bit exhausted but there’s still softness with it. It’s also surprising to Kenma since he didn’t expect being mentioned in the conversation. He has nothing to do with Kuroo’s crush.

“No it’s not, but it won’t hurt if he never finds out about it. “ This is the last straw for Kenma, he can’t co trip his tears from falling down his cheeks anymore. But he can’t make a noice or Kuroo would find out.

The last sentence from Kuroo hurt more than anything. Kenma has already tried his best to stay in his lane by being Kuroo’s best friend. But Kuroo’s words now means maybe he don’t want to best friends anymore. After all, he won’t even talked about his crush with Kenma. Or worse, he already finds out Kenma’s feeling but didn’t feel the same. That’s why he don’t want Kenma to find out his crush.

This finding makes the whole day turned into one of the worst Sunday Kenma ever experienced.

Why can’t Kuroo be in love with him, why can’t they share the same feelings from the start?

That night, Kenma cried himself to sleep.

Sunday is the worst.

🐈‍⬛

“You are not just a coward, Kuroo. You are also too selfish to actually care what Kenma wants.” Thats what Yaku said before cutting off the phone call.

Sighing and flopping down in his bed, Kuroo stares at the ceiling. He knows Yaku is right, he is a coward and he is too selfish to tell Kenma his feelings. But what can he even do about it? He’s terrified about this whole situation.

Kenma is more than just a crush, he is Kuroo’s everything. For Kuroo, Kenma feels like home. In front of Kenma, he can be himself. He doesn’t have to pretend to be someone else, he can be a silly goose and he knows Kenma would still love him as he is. The problem is Kenma wouldn’t love him more than a friend. If Kenma ever get married, Kuroo would definitely be his best man. And this hurts more than anything. Just the thought of not being able to be one of the most important people in Kenma’s life driving him crazy.

He can’t help but thought about the sugar daddy joke they made this morning. Well, it would be weird to say but he didn’t mind being Kenma’s sugar baby as long as he can stay with Kenma romantically.

Pathetic. Kuroo comments on his own thought. Confession shouldn’t be this hard.

All his overthinking has already made Kenma uncomfortable, he knows. Lately, Kenma has become more and more silent around him when they are alone. He’s too scared to ask Kenma about it, cause what if Kenma said he’s tired of Kuroo?

But at the same time, he feels Kenma has been more tolerant towards him as well. Lately Kenma would purr under his touch instead of complaining. Does this mean Kenma also have special feelings towards him?

This love is driving me insane. Kuroo sighed to himself. He should really think about confessing to Kenma soon. Or he may just die from all these extra stress and overthinking.

🐈‍⬛

The week after is not better for Kuroo. Every time he looks at Kenma, he feels like a Cupid is using arrows to shoot his heart. The fact that someone can feel in love with the same person so many times is crazy, but that’s what is happening to Kuroo.

I really should confess. Kuroo keeps hyping himself up, but at the end, he would just hold his breath and swallow down the words he wanna say. He’s still too scared to say anything, but he tried his best to express it through other ways. He would spend more time cuddling with Kenma, flirt with him, cook his favorite food. His feelings has to go somewhere and he really wish Kenma could take his hint.

But Kenma seems distant compares to before. He would ignore his flirt, move away from cuddles and use excuses to skip the food he cooks. Kenma even spend less and less time in the apartment they shared.

Something happened but Kuroo don’t know what is it, and he has no solution to change the situation.

He has to talk to Kenma now, or Kenma will simply disappear from his life.

But it’s impossible to find a time he can talk to Kenma anymore. Kenma avoid him strategically, since they know each others schedule. Kuroo tried to go to Kenma’s class to find him, but he always managed to escape.

Thank god there’s still weekends. Though Kuroo can’t find Kenma anywhere on Saturday, he knows Kenma would do his livestream. So he patiently sit outside Kenma’s room and watched the whole thing and felt relieved when he saw the familiar backdrop.

Kenma is in their apartment, so he can barge in his room after the livestream is over and have a proper conversation.

It’s clear that Kenma has something bothering g him, since all his game performance during the live stream is a bit sloppy compared to normal. Someone in the chat picks it up and kindly send a message towards Kenma asking whether he’s okay.

Kuroo saw Kenma showed a pained smile and that alone made his heart sink and ache.

“I think I’m feeling better.” Kenma said, “I found out the person I love has a crush on someone else and it’s been a hell of a week. But as I said I’m feeling better now. Thanks for asking though.”

Kenma has a crush.

When? Who? And why he never told Kuroo about it? The aching feeling comes back. Kuroo finds himself hard to breathe.

For the rest of the stream, Kuroo was not paying to much attention. He’s busy thinking whether he should confess anymore. But according to Kenma’s words, he may already moved on from that person, this may give him chances to win Kenma over.

While he’s busy spiraling inside his thoughts once again, the stream is over. Kuroo heard the doorknob turned and when he looks up, he saw a surprised Kenma.

“What are you doing here?” Kenma sighed and asked.

“Trying to talk since you’ve been avoiding me this whole week. “

“Well, I don’t think we need to talk. After all, you’ve also been hiding things from me. “ Kenma paused for a second then continued, “Isn’t that what you said? It’s won’t hurt if Kenma never find it out. “

“So you heard the conversation. “ Kuroo can feel his voice shaking. “If you don’t like it, you can tell me. I can change and …”

But Kenma cut him off before he can finish, and he lean down to wipe Kuroo’s face. “Hey, don’t cry. You don’t have to change anything. And I would never asked you to change. You fell in love with someone else and it’s fine. It’s me who need to change. You are right we need to talk, but I just can’t deal with it right now ok? I can’t just talk to you like I never had feelings before. “

Kenma’s reply is a bit of shock to Kuroo. Maybe he’s too sad to function, because why does it sounds like Kenma’s crush is him. And why Kenma think Kuroo doesn’t love him. So when Kuroo finally opens his mouth, the only thing he can say is “I love YOU!”

This time it’s Kenma who’s surprised. “But aren’t you in love with the barista?”

“No, never. “ Kiroo laughed because Kenma now looks too cute, like a frightened kitten, he can’t help but lean in and stamp a little kiss on Kenma’s mouth. “It’s always you. Only you.”

“From the start?” Kenma nudges a little closer, eyes glistening.

“Yes. “ Kuroo hugged Kenma and whisper in his ears.

“ I love you from the start. “
