Work Text:

"I dunno, Jane. Who breaks up with their boyfriendt a carnival?" sighed Susan as they walked past food stalls.

"C'mon, Susan, you know what he gets like. I don't want to get banned from the one place in town that makes a decent cappuccino when he starts losing his temper and throwing things," Jane muttered, pretending to look at the various offerings, then pausing at a banner that proclaimed the 'World's Strongest Man' lay within.

A carnival barker noticed her interest and howled in her face, "Step right up, just $5 to see the World's Strongest Man!" As Jane turned back to Susan, he desperately yelled after them, "Watch as he flings a completely normal potato so high in the air that it cooks as it-"

The rest of his words were lost in the surrounding cacophony, especially the bells and whistles of a strength tester and the cheers of the group of friends clustered around it.

As the young women got closer to the Ferris Wheel and started seeing the silhouettes of the two guys waiting for them, Jane's footsteps slowed and she pretended to be very interested in a goldfish booth, so Susan was the only one to see something falling very quickly before she saw Jake suddenly collpse to the ground.

Without thinking, Susan grabbed Jane's shoulder and hurried them both through the crowd that was starting to amass around the fallen young man. When they pushed through the crowd, Sean looked up, distraught, from where he was kneeling next to Jake, his head covered with someone's jacket. The spreading stain made it quite clear why no one was rushing for help or calling for an ambulance.

"I don't know what happened," Sean cried, before the carnival worker standing next to him, looked away from the walkie-talkie he was attempting to get working.

The carnie said, in a tone that expressed he had believed before to have seen all the oddities of life, but had never even considered the situation before him, "It was a potato."

"What?" a befuddled Sean asked. "He was hit by a rock you mean?"

The worker looked down at Sean, bleak shock in his eyes as he corrected him with a sentence he could not believe he was actually uttering. "No, like, an actual potato... it was still steaming..." and then he drifted towards another employee in a Security shirt who was pushing through the crowd.

Sean stopped crying in shock and started eyeing the sky anxiously while muttering, "Potatoes... vengeance of the tubers..."

Sarah was baffled and stared at her brother for a long moment before mentally shrugging as she prayed whatever it was would wear off before she had to explain this ordeal to their mother.

Jane started giggling hysterically then admitted, "I guess that's one way to break up!"
