Work Text:

The world is beautiful.

Egg realised that the day he had been dropped from the heavens down to the soft grass, and he remembers, his first thought was about how bright it was.

The grass was soft on his back, the bright blue was almost blinding, his eyes hurt and watered, tears flowing down his face unconsciously.

The sun, beating down on his face, hurting his eyes. It was foreign, new. Father had instructed him not to visit the mortal world, and yet, curiosity got the best of him.

He watched. He watched birds flying around, spreading their wings wide and curveting in the sky, free and beautiful. He watched the river flowing, seeing little fishes swim and leap.

Egg also realised another thing that day, humans, for all their faults, were truly beautiful.

He remembers, the first time he saw him, a young boy, filled with scraps from head to toe, with beautiful long purple hair, nothing like Egg had seen before.

Wemmbu,that was his name.

Wemmbu was kind enough. So unbelievably stupid, though.

Egg watched the guy shake ten different birch trees, trying to find apples. What an idiot. Egg hadn't even been on Earth until a few hours ago, and even he knew that only oak trees could drop apples.

But god, watching Wemmbu smile, and get all giddy after Egg shakes a oak tree and produces an apple, Egg gets it.

Humans are weird. But God, they're beautiful.

Over the years, Egg has to admit, the stupid boy who shook birch trees for apples, became his best friend. His one and only. And quite literally, his day one.

He also got to meet so much more weird people, who still somehow managed to fascinate him so much, Jaden, Minute, Rejoice, Flamefrags (who, granted, Egg hasn't had much positive interaction with, considering he's one of the main reasons Egg is here right now.)

Egg came to love the world more and more with every passing day, it was filled with so much to see, and he wanted to see it all, he wanted to do everything. The world was big, full of opportunities.

Maybe, maybe one day, he'll be the ruler of a big civilization, or maybe a famous philosopher, or maybe even king. Though now, seeing Parrot getting hunted and booed by literally everyone, he's not too sure on the becoming King part anymore. Or maybe, he'll become an pirate like Jaden and travel the world with Wemmbu. Though he doubts that he could ever be on the same level as Jaden, that guy is just way too fucking cool. Like, the aura is off the charts.

But sometimes, he also thinks he'll be happy, just living normally. Laughing, joking around with Wemmbu as the sun sets in the background.

Maybe they'll argue like they always do, and then laugh about it after.

"Dude, how the fuck can you be this horrible at fishing? It's fishing, dawg. You just put the rod in the water and pull."

Egg would laugh, watching Wemmbu reel in his fifth piece rotten flesh while grumbling about luck, like he always did.

"It's not my fault that you're so freakishly lucky! Come on, how many mending books are even in this river for you to be fishing up this much?!"

Egg laughed just thinking about it, his eyelids crinkling. Yeah. He's lucky.

He's so lucky to have met Wemmbu. Wemmbu, who always put him first. Wemmbu, who came and rescued him again and again. Wemmbu, who always made sure Egg was safe before anything else. Wemmbu, his best friend.

Wemmbu, who showed him the world and made it beautiful.

Egg sat down with a pained huff, his back against the hard obsidian, feeling the breeze moving on his face, just like it did the first time he fell into this wretched, beautiful world.

Egg always had big dreams. And yet, now, all he wanted was to see Wemmbu, to see his friend, hold him close and say Thank you.

His hand clutched the side of his stomach where the sword had been, blood, golden blood, leaking out onto his hands, painting them.

The only thing that greeted him outside was darkness, nothing, it was a contrast to the world Egg saw the first time, bright and vibrant and green, and now all he could see was black, pitch darkness.

How ironic.

Before he used to complain about how bright the sun was, but now, he's hoping, hoping so hard to see that brightness just one more time.

Egg hates to admit it, but he's afraid.

What comes after? What will greet him after this, just darkness for eternity? No.

Not yet. He doesn't want to die yet. He has so much to do.

He still has to go see the world. He has so much left to see. He has to write his book, he has to go and see Wemmbu and tell him that everything will be okay and that they'll manage somehow.

And as he feels his eyes closing and his own consciousness slipping away, the same thought hits him once more,

The world truly was beautiful.
