Stay Right Here

Summary:

Love is supposed to be studying. She is not studying. She is bored, clingy, and Milk is trying to work with a deadline right in front of her.

Outside, the sky has turned soft orange.

Inside, Milk has to find a way to keep her girlfriend from distracting her, which mostly involves putting her directly in her lap and telling her to stay.

Work Text:

Outside, the sky had orange now. Not harsh, not burning, just soft; like peach skin. Like someone had taken the sunset and watered it down with milk. It was pale and hazy, barely there and spilling in through the curtains in hushed stripes across the floor.

The apartment was quiet except for the faint clicking of Milk’s laptop.

Milk was sat on the low table by the window, her glasses low on her nose, trying really hard to focus on her work. She had a deadline and is determined to at least get through this last draft before dinner. Her hair was tied up messily, her sleeves pushed up and she had that little crease between her eyebrows that would only show when she was really concentrated.

Love was supposed to be on the couch studying her script. She was in fact not studying her script. The script had been opened on the same page it had been twenty minutes ago, left completely forgotten. And love was sprawled flat on her back on the rug, staring up at the ceiling, then at Milk, then back at the ceiling, completely utterly bored.

It started small, a sigh loud on purpose, and then a quiet, drawn out “Miiiiiilllllkkkkk,”

Milk doesn’t look up, but her mouth twitches. “Yes, Love?”

“Nothing, just checking if you’re still alive.” Love rolls on to her stomach and props her chin up on her hand. “You’ve been typing for an hour..”

“I’ts been twenty five minutes, Love,” Milk says calmly, eyes still glued on her laptop.

“It feels like an HOUR!” Love crawls a little closer, until she’s right behind Milk, and then flops her upper body right onto Milk’s back like a blanket. Her arms loop loosely around Milk’s neck, her cheek squished on Milk’s shoulder. “You’re warm.”

Milk's typing slows. She reaches up with one hand to steady Love so she doesn't slide off, her fingers wrapping gently but firmly around Love's wrist. "If you wanted cuddles, you could have just said so."

“But this is more fun.” Love mumbles, nuzzling into her neck and pressing soft, teasing kisses on Milk’s collarbone. She knows exactly what she’s doing.

Milk finally exhales, one long, soft sigh and hits save. She closes the laptop with a soft click and turns around in one fluid motion. Before Love can even process it, Milk had already caught her by the waist and tugged her forward. Straight into her lap, on the floor.

Love lets out a surprised yelp and laughed, hand landing on Milk’s shoulder to balance herself. Now she’s sitting sideways in Milk’s lap, legs tucked and face to face, completely trapped in Milk’s arms.

“You’re really bad at being patient, you know?” Milk murmurs, her voice low and a little teasing, but her arms are secured around Love, holding her in place. One hand slides up to tuck a stray strand of Loves hair with a softness that doesn’t match how firm she’s holding her.

Love pouts, but her cheeks are flushed, her arms still around Milk’s neck. “You were ignoring me..”

“I wasn’t ignoring you, I was working.” Milk says, leaning back on one hand, completely calm and in control while Love is a flustered mess in her lap. “But since you can’t behave yourself for five minutes alone, you’re going to stay right here where I can see you.”

Love’s eyes go wide, then soft. She loves it when Milk gets like this, all quiet and sure. She curls in closer without even thinking about it, resting her head on Milk’s shoulder.

“Okay,” she whispers, small and happy. “I’ll stay,”

Milk smiles, that genuine, fond smile she only ever gives Love. She pulls the blanket from the couch down over Love’s legs and opens her laptop again with one hand, the other leaving Loves waist. “Good girl. Now be quiet for me a little longer, then i’m all yours.”

And Love does. She stays silent and curled up on Milk’s lap, listening to the soft clicks of Milk’s keyboard and the steady way Milk holds her close.
