Work Text:

Few might find this field of study unnecessary, but it is one Holou prides himself on with his specific expertise.
See, he had always been one to find himself enamored with the ancestral lands of the lalafellin people and the engravings they left behind. Regardless of wood or stone, Holou had a way of tracing the symbols back to their original meaning and what the people of eld wished to share from a far bygone era. Many ancient totem poles and carved tree trunks dotted around their homeland isles and left with them a piece of a great wisdom… some even with runes that still worked to this day of ancient arcanima.
Today? He had been included with an expedition into ruins of incredibly ancient origins. They were there to uncover relics of the past… and for his part, a linguistic should the find unfamiliar words or symbols.
“What does it say?”
One of the Sharlayan scholars in charge of this trip regarded Holou the same as any other man of learning. It was a wonderful feeling, finding himself needed for a purpose very few could fulfill.
He traced his finger across long strings of what must have been text in a tongue not many would recognize. At first, going in a typical left to right reading format—before pausing. Ah… so it was one of those… When he came to the end of the first line, he starting with the next by following the final character and tracing back from right to left. Over and over until he had discerned the matter of writing.
“Tis no treasure trove as one might hope to find, but this appears to be a retelling of a civilization of eld from many eras ago… likely thousands upon thousands of years by the worn characters.” And it was up to him to study and discern once they had returned to the Studium, where Holou would likely find himself pouring over books till he’d figured out the exact one. Something he’d be lauded for once his findings bore fruit and another mark of excellence placed on his record.
