(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

It had been 1 week since the Quarter Quell. Maysilee Donner, the “shrew” of District 12, had won it all. “Twice the number of tributes, Twice the glory” they all said, more like twice the number of nightmares. Maysilee had dreams—no— night terrors about the Games. About her allies who had lost their lives due to the “all mighty” President Snow. Everyday she woke up, she had the same mantra playing in her mind. Louella McCoy, Haymitch Abernathy, Lou Lou, Wyatt Callow.

…Wyatt Callow.

Her most prominent dreams were of him. She would see him, in a meadow, but not like the arena meadow. A true meadow, filled with soft grass and didn’t smell of perfume. They would hug in the middle of the beautiful landscape, as the sunset over them, then Maysilee would lean in for a kiss, and Wyatt would kiss back. But as soon as she broke the kiss, it would become a nightmare. Maysilee started to taste iron in her mouth, then she would look and see her love, Wyatt, slashed open from Panache’s sword. His lips dribbling blood. Wyatt would then fall back into the meadow, his lifeless body being swallowed into the ground. Then, Maysilee blinks, and it’s a grave. His grave. And then two small ones on either sides of his that had the words

“In another life that could never have been.”

Maysilee always assumed it represented the children they never got to have.

It was another day at the candy shop. Instead of living in Victors Village, she wanted to live at home for the first two months of being home from the Games. It was boring, per usual. Rarely any customers came for the candy today, but rather asked about the games and gave her their condolences.  She didn’t need their pity though, what she needed was her Oddsmaker back. But that was never going to happen, even if she wished on the brightest star.

Wyatt had talked about wishing on stars, ever since they got to the apartments. Maysilee would catch him up late, on the balcony, staring at the sky. Which was hard to see due to all the tall, monstrous, and bright Capitol buildings that overwhelmed the city.

“Wyatt what are you doing? It’s 3 in the morning.” Maysilee asked in a whisper.

Wyatt whipped his head around to see her, standing there in the sleep shirt and pants that were identical to his. His shoulders relax as he saw it was just her. He looked back at the skyline, squinting his eyes slightly, trying to find something in the night. “I’m not leaving until you answer me.” Maysilee chided with a smack of her lips, the wind smacking her in the face. “It’s nothing.” Wyatt deadpanned. Maysilee stalked over to him, not believing a lick of what he was saying.

“We both know thats not true.” Maysilee laughed, putting a hand on his broad shoulders. “You waiting for an angel from above to come and whisk you away?” She snorted. “No? There’s a higher chance of a plane crashing into us than that. Besides, angels may or not be real—“

“I was joking…”

“Oh. Sorry.”

Maysilee gazed at him with a frown, trying to read his face, but he was unreadable. He looked back up at the muggy night sky, definitely murkier than the sky in 12. Even then it’s still hard to see with all the smog. Then suddenly his eyes widen, and they are filled with a twinge of…hope? Maysilee looked up to try and see what he was seeing. But only saw nothing but a cloudy, smoggy, sky. “What are you looking at…?” Maysilee said curiously, but was given no answer, instead she heard him say:

“Starlight, star bright,  brightest star I see tonight. I wish I may, I wish I might, be free from The Hunger Games tonight.”

Maysilee stood there like a statue gazing upon him. Her eyes wide with shock, was he praying? Wyatt had his hands clasped together, just at his mouth as he spoke the words in a voice lower than a whisper. His eyes were squinted shut, tears dripping down his face. His lips and hands shook in unison as the words rolled of his tongue. “Wyatt…?” Maysilee asked, rubbing circles into his shoulder, trying to calm him down. She took her other hand and wiped the tears away as he just stood there.  His eyes opened, revealing his beautiful gray irises to Capitol night sky once more. “I’m sorry.” Wyatt croaked. “What was that? Are you okay?” Maysilee asked with concern. Wyatt puffed, a smile creeping across his face. His shaggy black hair swayed with the wind, his olive skin glimmered in the light of the Capitol buildings. Maysilee couldn’t help but notice the blush creeping across his face, and the blush that was soon visible on her. “It’s a little mantra that my grandma said to me before she passed. But you can replace the words as much as your heart desires, she would say.” Wyatt lamented. Maysilee looked at the Capitol skyline, it was overwhelming, seeing the bright buildings that never went dark. “I just need a reminder of home right now.” Wyatt confessed. Maysilee pretended not to notice that he was staring at her with those gorgeous gray eyes of his. “Grandma Callow seems like a pretty nice lady.” Maysilee said, finally gazing into his eyes. The sounds of the ever bustling Capitol drowned out into nothingness as they stared at each other.

“So how does it go? Star bright, starlight? I wish to be free from the Hunger games?”Maysilee babbled, mixing up the words horrendously.  Wyatt let out a loud laugh, the first time she ever heard him laugh since… well—at all actually. ‘He laughs as loud as he snores’ Maysilee thought to herself, though she had nothing against it, it was adorable to her. “It goes like this, repeat after me, okay?” Wyatt said shifting a little closer to her. “Okay.” Maysilee smiled, shifting her hand on his shoulders to hold his.

“Starlight, Star bright,” Wyatt said.

“Starlight, Star bright” Maysilee nodded.

“Brightest star I see tonight.” He smiled, moving some of her blonde curls behind her ear

“Brightest star I see tonight.” She repeated, blushing at his hand being so close to her face.

“I wish I may, I wish I might.” He looked into her icy blue eyes, like he was peaking into her soul.

“I wish I may, I wish I might.” She gave him smile as she looked into those beautiful deep gray eyes of his.

“Be free from the Hunger Games tonight.”

“Kiss Wyatt Callow tonight.”

Maysilee froze in place. She was trying to hold back those words as they slipped into existence. Her eyes wide, her body slightly trembling, eyes avoiding his. Blush crept across her face and ears, turning the tips of her pale ears pink. Maysilee forced herself looked at Wyatt, whose face was “beet red” as he would call it. “I should probably go to bed…” Wyatt mumbled. “Yeah…me too.”

Maysilee sighed. He was starting to walk away, but Maysilee couldn’t let this moment slip away and it becomes a final regret when she dies in a few days. She grabs his wrist tightly, causing him to look back at her with a face of shock. She pulled him in and kissed him. The world seemed to go quiet around them, they weren’t in the Capitol anymore, facing impending doom. It was just them and only them.

Maysilee sighed while toying with her necklaces, bored out of her mind. She heard the familiar but annoying bell ring, Maysilee looked up to see…

No way…

It looked too much like her Oddsmaker. Two people who looked like him stepped right in the door. They had the same hat as him, the same height, same stature, same jawline, same everything. It was like she was dreaming and never wanted to be woken up. But then reality hits her in the head like a brick going over 100 mph. It wasn’t those gorgeous gray eyes she dreamed about so often, both of the boys who looked like her love, had deep brown eyes. And not the shaggy black hair that haunted her in the night, but brown, tussled hair that was slightly hidden under their hats. They looked identical to each other, and also looked so much like Wyatt. Had Snow sent some body-doubles of her love to torture her?

“Hello Ms. Donner.” The boy on the right with a leather jacket said, looking at the floor. “Hello, what can I get you two today?” Maysilee said, putting on her best front to make her seem fine. Probably some Seam people giving her their condolences, like that hadn’t for the 10th time that day.  “We don’t want anything…But we have something for you.” The boy with a gray shirt, covered in coal dust murmured. Something for her? Was it poison? A pink bird that was going to come out and kill her like they killed Haymitch?

“We’re Wyatt Callow’s brothers, two out of 12 older brothers of his.” The boy in the leather jacket sighed. “Im Kennedy and thats Kenneth.” Kennedy said while pointing at his brother. ‘No wonder they look so much like him..’ Maysilee pondered.  “We’re twins if ya’ couldn’t tell.” Kenneth mumbled. Maysilee could tell all-right, though, if she saw them in the street, should would’ve probably mistaken them for her Oddsmaker.

“W-we…we were— uh— sent to g-give you this.” Kennedy’s voice breaking, tears rolling down his face. Kenneth took his hat off and hid his face in it, but it wasn’t able to hide the sounds of weeping that fell through. “It’s f-from Wyatt…He was supposed to g-give this to you after the r-reaping… but ya’ know that—“ Kennedy cut himself off with his own tears streaming down his face. The leather jacket boy wiped his nose on his sleeve. “H-he told us that if he w-were to get reaped, he w-wanted us to give it t-to you.” Kennedy cried. “What is it…?” Maysilee asked, her voice slightly breaking. Kennedy pulled a letter out of his pocket, his hand shakily gave it to her. Kennedy looked at the ground as he handed it over to her. Maysilee gently grabbed the letter and saw a few words written in chicken scratch on the envelope , he was obviously nervous while writing it. It said:

To: Maysilee Donner

From: Wyatt A.C. Callow

There was a burning in the back of Maysilee’s eyes. She wondered what A.C. stood for, possibly his middle name? Maybe his brothers would know. “What does A.C. Mean?” Maysilee asked, examining the enveloped letter. Kenneth let out a strangled laugh, choked back by tears. “It’s his middle names. His full name is Wyatt Adam Cooper Callow… it’s a funny story actually…” Kenneth said while removing his hat from his face. Kennedy softly giggled in agreement. “When Ma was pregnant with him, her and Pa had the choice of three name’s…” Kennedy smiled as he thought of the story. “They couldn’t decided, so they asked the twelve of us brothers to decide between the names Wyatt, Adam, or Cooper. And since there was 12 of us, all of us divided into the name we liked best into groups of 4, making it a tie.” Kenneth chuckled.

“The oldest Ben, James, Danny, and Carl all chose Wyatt. The middles, Harold, Beau, Frans, and Noah chose Adam. And the youngest Me, Kenneth, Liam, and Will all chose Cooper.” Kennedy said, wiping his tears on his sleeve. It seemed to be a fond memory for them, why wouldn’t it be? It was the naming of their baby brother. Though, that baby brother was no longer a baby, and will never have a chance to grow up past eighteen. “So Ma and Pa settled on naming the baby Wyatt Adam Cooper Callow, just to appease us.” Kenneth’s laugh rung through the shop.

‘He laughs just like Wyatt.’ Maysilee thought.

“We’ll—uh, we’ll leave ya’ be Ms. Donner.” Kennedy said while nodding towards the shop door. “Thank you for coming and delivering this.” Maysilee paused “And please, call me Maysilee.” She watched them leave together, Kennedy wrapping an arm around his twin brother as they walked down the street. She wondered, if she had died in the arena, would Merrliee still be a twin? Maysilee forcefully pushed the thought out of her mind as she glanced down at the letter. She didn’t even realize her hands were shaking. Maysilee flipped the letter over and opened the envelope. Her cheeks turned into a shade of pink. Paper was a scarce commodity for the Seam kids, or though she heard. They could only get their paper from school or if their on dire times, from the tesserae. One of her old friends from elementary school, Roxie Turnblad, had stolen a couple pieces of paper to give to her parents. But she hasn’t seen Roxie, not since the 49th Hunger Games. Maysilee can still hear her screams as she was eaten and suffocated by those silver beetles. It was disturbing to say the least as they crawled into her mouth. But for Wyatt to waste such a rare item in his household just to send her letter was sweet and endearing.

Maysilee gently opened the letter, eyes widen with anticipation, it was a long one, all written in chicken scratch. Maysilee looked up at the top of the letter and started to read it in a murmur.

Dear Maysilee Donner,

I understand we haven’t talked much, and we don’t see each other often. And the only time we talking is at your father’s shop, but I have something to tell you—well more like write you. I’m better with writing my thoughts than speaking them. But the thing is that I like you. Like, like like you. A-lot. You probably think this is really odd and out of the blue, but this how I feel about you. And I’ve felt this way about you since 2 years, 2.5 months, and 3 days ago (yes I kept count). Whenever I get my triweekly mine wage, I usually go to the Sweet Shop, saying its to buy my ma candy. Which is partly true. But the main reason is that I wanted to see you. You were always easy on the eye to me, a real beauty. You always carried yourself with a high regard, which admire. You don’t let other’s opinions affect you, even if they do, you do a great job at hiding it. You are confident and speak your mind, which is something I have trouble doing myself. You always know how to dress properly, even with District 12’s small catalog of clothes, but you make it work. You are as beautiful as the stars and moon Maysilee. I hope you like me as much as I like you. Come and find me after the Reaping, or write back to me if you like me too.

Sincerely,

Wyatt A.C. Callow

Maysilee froze, her eyes burning with tears.  They started to roll down her face rapidly, and her body started to shake. Her knees gave in and she fell with a loud bang, Maysilee’s breathing becoming shallow and fast. He had liked her for so long, and she only figured it out after the fact that he was dead? Some crush she was. Then the image popped into her head, one she couldn’t erase even if she was hijacked by the Capitol themselves.

Panache’s blade, Wyatt’s blood flying in the air, his body falling with a thud. Lou Lou running. The sound of a guttural scream coming from Wyatt. She couldn’t make it in time, he was as good as dead by the time she could reach him. Panache looked at her with a sadistic smile. Then the memory ended there, but it replayed in her mind as she wailed on the ground. Maysilee, unable to hold in her pain, sorrow, and guilt, she let out a loud, guttural, ear piercing scream for all of District 12 to hear. Maysilee’s senses were failing her at this moment. She couldn’t hear anything besides a loud ringing, and she couldn’t see anything due to the tears streaming down her face. Her fingers were numb and she couldn’t feel anything.

Her mouth tasted like iron, like Wyatt’s own blood that he shed for Lou Lou. Her sense of smell was blocked by the snot running down her face. Maysilee wailed out in sorrow as she clutched the note to her heart, one of her final mementos of Wyatt. This letter, and his scrip coin necklace from Haymitch was all she had left of him. She had no idea how Haymitch had gotten it, but it was hers now, and hers to keep. She remembered Haymitch saying those words to her.

“Here” Haymitch said pulling off one of two necklaces he was wearing. His flint striker, and another one that looked unfamiliarly familiar. He handed it to her and she gladly accepted it. “It was the necklace you made Wyatt.” He sighed while messing with his flint striker, the atmosphere shifted almost instantly. “How’d you get it? I thought they already took his body. And I didn’t see you in the blood bath.” Maysilee asked looking at him. Haymitch slightly flinched. There was something he was doing and he wasn’t telling her. He didn’t answer her, but just looked out as the sunset over the arena, fiddling with his gift from Lenore Dove.

“I know how much it means to you.” He chuckled. “With you liking him and all.” The artificial wind picked up slightly. Maysilee’s cheeks turned warm and red at Haymitch’s remark. Maysilee examined the necklace, admiring her own excellent craftsmanship. She remembered his laugh and how his token bounced with his shoulders that night when she mixed up the words to his starlight mantra. “I kissed him, before the games.” Maysilee confessed with a smile. Haymitch’s jaw dropped as he shot his head towards her. “Really?” Haymitch said, with a very obvious tone of confusion. “Yeah.” Maysilee sighed. It was almost night time in the arena, the fake moon rising in the sky.

“Whatever you do with his necklace, make sure to keep it safe. It’s your’s to keep after all.” That was the last night Haymitch was alive.

—

Maysilee woke up with a headache, the light being too bright for her eyes. She let out a loud groan, her brain foggy. Then she realized, the note was not in her hands anymore. And Wyatt’s necklace was not safely secured on her neck, where she swore it was. She had not taken it off since she got it, even when her stylist tried to remove it, she would refuse and scream at them. She didn’t feel bad for it though, those Capitol people would never understand what she went through. Maysilee quickly rushed over to her vanity, though her feet were heavy and her vision blurred. She looked to the best of her ability and searched her vanity, messing up her perfectly curated collection of jewelry and makeup. Maysilee threw stuff on the floor, looking for her mementos of her Oddsmaker.  She must’ve have been really loud, because her mother, father, and her twin rushed into her room.

“Maysilee? Is everything okay? We heard—“

“Where are they?!”

“The what—“ Maysilee cut off her father. “His necklace! The letter! I need them!” Maysilee lashed out in anger. Her breath was fast, shallow, her sorrow coming out as anger. And she was in-fact, very angry, she was livid. She had been reaped, forced to deal with stupid Drusilla, thrown into the games, saw the love of her life get slashed open. And on-top of that, saw her new found brother get killed by pink flamingos, saw a small child get decapitated, and then thrown into interviews like she won a gameshow. Maysilee was angry at the Capitol, at the world, at anything that wasn’t her family. “Maysilee, we have them. We actually made a little surprise for you while you were knocked out.” Merrilee chimed as she grabbed an old shoe box with shoes much too big for her feet from the floor before handing it to her. “Do you think an old pair of shoes is gonna help me find his stuff.” Maysilee snapped. Merrilee’s lips pressed together in a thin line. “It’s whats in the box.” Merrilee murmured while eyeing the worn out box.

Maysilee opened the box, her eyes widened with shock. It was Wyatt’s token, and the lover letter he had written her, with other things. It was his paperboy hat, assuming probably had multiple from his 12 older brothers. A box of gambling cards that he most likely used when he set odds, and then, the most heartwarming token of them all, a photo of him smiling with a pickaxe over his shoulder, a mining hard hat on, and coal dust shrouding his face. Maysilee set the box on her bed as Merrliee helped her sit down. Maysilee grasped the necklace and quickly put it back on her neck, feeling whole again. She gently grabbed his paper boy hat, an article of clothing that she thought didn’t look good on anyone, but on Wyatt, it always looked good him. She gave it a small kiss before placing it back in the box.

Maysilee then grabbed the box of cards, she flipped the box over to see a few words scribbled on the back of it with marker saying:

“Wyatt’s Box! Do not Touch! (Especially you Beau)”

Maysilee giggled at the last line, she wondered what Beau had done to his cards that Wyatt had to put a warning on them. She kissed the box of cards gingerly and then set it back down in its original spot.

Maysilee looked towards the letter, going to pick it up, but she hesitated, going for the picture instead. She picked it up and examined it carefully, tears slowly forming in her eyes as she looked at her lost loved one. She flipped the picture around to see a few words in chicken scratch that said:

“First day back at the mines. 2/27”

Maysilee smiled, that seemed like forever ago, but it actuality it was exactly 5-6 months ago. Wyatt looked so happy, so full of life that was unjustly taken away from him. He had so much more life to live. ‘He should’ve been the victor.’ Maysilee thought.  Her skirt was wrinkled from today’s breakdown and sleeping in it. If it was any other circumstance, Maysilee would have changed immediately into something else, but she couldn’t care less right now. She was sure Wyatt couldn’t care less either.

She then looked at the letter gently picking it up while setting the picture of him down. Maysilee scanned through the letter once more, looking at probably the last thing he wrote before he died. It felt wrong to touch it, even if it was for her. It felt like she was erasing the handprints of him, erasing his touch from existence. But Maysilee then remembered what her late grandmother had told her, “Nothing they can take from you was ever worth keeping” And with all of these mementos, memories, and stories that still float around in her brain, the Capitol could never really take Wyatt Callow from her, which was comforting, especially for a time like this.

“Were’d y’all even find these?” Maysilee asked, looking at her. Merrliee slightly smiled at her then back at the box full of memorabilia of Wyatt. “We went by his house, asking if it was alright with Mrs. Callow and his brothers to give some of his belongings to you, and without hesitation, she gave it to us in his old shoe box.” Merrliee said “Mrs. Callow wanted us to let you know how much she loved you and wanted you as a daughter in law.” That was it. Thats what made the dam of Maysilee’s completely fall. She wept out, tears rolling down on her pale skin, trickling down her cheeks and onto her purple bed. Maysilee wiped her tears as best as she could to reread the letter again, and again, and again.

Maysilee scanned the last line of the letter, “Come and find me after the Reaping,” She smiled, then an idea popped in that head pf hers. Was it the brightest especially as a victor? No. But she’d do it in a heartbeat to see her Oddsmaker again. ‘Alright Wyatt, I’m coming to find you.’ Maysilee thought to herself.

Maysilee’s best-friend Asterid March had been outside the confines of District 12 more than she can count. That amount of times she would burst into the sweet shop swooning over her boyfriend, Burdock Everdeen.“You won’t believe it Maysilee!! He wrote me a song and then he sang it to me in that pretty voice of his—“ Asterid would talk about him for hours. But right now she was busy helping Burdock comfort his cousin, Lenore Dove, with the loss of Haymitch. Just near the whole in the fence, was the District 12 graveyard, she’d only been there twice, once for her grandmother, and the other was for her three friends from the games. Though she barely remembers what happened, she passed out mid funeral, too overwhelmed with grief. But she remembers faintly after the funeral, Asterid had basically mapped out the graveyard spot for her after telling her about how she and Burdock comforted Lenore Dove. Come to think of it, Lenore Dove has been missing for a while. The Covey usually performs after the Hunger games to boost District morale, which Tam Amber and Clerk Carmine have performed, but no sign of Lenore Dove. Maybe she was too grief stricken. Her and Haymitch were so happy together, it’s a shame that she’ll grow up and he won’t go past 16.

It was midnight, everyone in the Donner household was sleeping, except Maysilee.  She had carefully walked down the steps of their conjoined business and home. She walked through the candy shop, avoiding the creaky floorboards. Maysilee was not wearing her usual purple dress with the pretty white lace on the hem and sleeves, instead, she was wearing dark jeans, a black shirt she stole from her father, with a deep black jacket. She had left her necklaces at home, only Wyatt’s token necklace adorned her neck. Was this a rather fashionable outfit? No. But this ensemble was about practicality, not prettiness.  Maysilee snuck through the towns part of 12, without any Peace Keepers noticing. It’s not like there were many in the Town though, they’re more in the Seam. It always gave the impression that the Seam was dangerous, but it actuality it wasn’t.  She had been there many of times, with friends like Roxie when she was young or Asterid when she would visit her “Mockingjay”, as she would call Burdock.

From what Asterid said, the hole in the fence was in between the small part of forest that sits beautifully on the slope that separates the Seam and the Town. Maysilee snuck past the Peace Keepers station at the slope, like she had in the arena. The amount of times Maysilee had to sneak past sleeping and awake careers to steal food or just to get by was crazy. She even snuck past Panache while he was killing a boy from Two, accusing him of eating a boiled egg, when it was really her who stole it. If Panache hadn’t stabbed his sword immediately into the boy’s chest, she would’ve revealed herself from hiding and at that egg right in-front of him. Maysilee wandered deep into the small forest, soon finding the whole in the fence.

Maysilee heard a noise, it sounded like…crying? She walked towards the sound, hearing the cries become clearer and clearer. Then she found it, the District 12 graveyard. Maysilee looked at the three newest graves, with new headstones and fresh flowers. On one of the graves was the Covey girl Haymitch has adored, Lenore Dove. She was lying down on the dirt that covered Haymitch’s grave, weeping his name into the ground. Maysilee just stood there, not sure if she should go comfort her or not. She thought about it, and if she was her, she would want someone to comfort her. As Maysilee tried to go and comfort her, she stepped on a twig, startling Lenore Dove. Lenore Dove quickly rose to her feet and away from Maysilee, walking away from Haymitch’s grave, near the other side of the forest. Lenore Dove’s eyes red and puffy from all the crying she had probably been doing over the last week. She had Haymitch’s flint striker around her neck, clutching it to her chest. Looks like they both had the same idea, wearing their dead lovers token around their necks. Lenore Dove looked like a deer in lights, shaking like a leaf, and looked weak. Lenore Dove headed toward the trees, about to run into the forest where she could hide and get away from Maysilee. But then she stopped, slightly turning towards her.

“Thank you for being his sister.”

She then ran off into the woods without a trace.

Maysilee focused her attention back to her mission, looking at Wyatt’s grave. His head was clean and clearly marked, unlike some of the others where there was barely a name on them. She slowly walked towards his grave and then plopped down on her knees. Maysilee was feeling more than guilty in this moment. It should’ve been one of them to win. Wyatt had a big family that cared about him, Haymitch had the love of his life with him, Louella had a family that loved her with every bone in their body, and she didn’t know much about Lou Lou, but she probably had a loving family. But she was the victor. The most stuck girl in town. The shrew.  Maysilee looked at her Louella and Haymitch’s grave, giving them a faint smile before the tears started to stream down her face. She looked back at Wyatt’s grave, reading the words that were etched on it.

Wyatt Callow

Son, Brother, Oddsmaker, Booker Boy

Wyatt was not a Booker Boy. It was just insulting to Wyatt’s memory to call him that. He was adamant on the fact he was not a Booker Boy, even when others like Louella discounted him for it. Maysilee was upset that they put that on his grave, because he wasn’t just a Booker Boy, he was an incredibly gifted kid. He was charming, smart, strong, handsome, funny, radiant, and overall just a good guy, trying to breaking free from his family’s reputation. Maysilee let out a faint cry, as she didn’t want the Peace Keepers coming to get her as she weeped. She rested her head against his headstone as her tears trickled down onto the dirt of his grave. “H-hey Wyatt, it’s Maysilee.” Maysilee croaked out, messing with her Oddsmakers token. “You told me to come and meet you after the Reaping, so here I am.” Maysilee sobbed. Her hand rested on the headstone as she opened her eyes to see the flowers that were left on his grave. Forget-me-nots. ‘Oh how could I ever forget you Wyatt.’ Maysilee thought to herself, which added fuel to the fire of her tears. “I-I’m so s-sorry that I didn’t tell y-you how I felt… I hope that k-kiss was sufficient enough to let you know how I feel.” Maysilee slightly laughed through her sobs of pure heartbreak. Her heart ached and yearned for Wyatt, with him gone, she felt like she had lost a huge part of herself. “I just need a reminder of home right now.” She remembered Wyatt saying that night on the Balcony. Maysilee needs that too, she needs a reminder of the home she lost when she lost her Oddsmaker. She gently kissed the grave as she collected her thoughts, remembering the mantra he had said that fateful night.

“Starlight, Star bright, brightest star I see tonight. I wish I may, I wish I might…”

Maysilee paused, trying to think of what to wish for. She knew that her most wanted desire would be plausible, she wanted them all, Wyatt, Haymitch, Louella, and Lou Lou back, which is impossible. But she had no other wish, then for them to be in that group hug, before going into the arena of death, and only one of them coming out of it. So she finished her wish, knowing it will never come true.

“Have you back in my arms tonight.” Maysilee wept into the headstone, kissing it once more. She had stopped caring about how loud she was any more. Maysilee then looked into the dark, starry, sky. In the sky were three shooting stars flying across the night sky. One large asteroid , a medium sized asteroid, and two small asteroids flew above her and the graves. That was Wyatt, Haymitch, Lou Lou and Louella no doubt. Maysilee smiled into the night sky as she felt her wish had come true. They weren’t in her arms tonight, but they were with her nonetheless, in physical form, or space form. Maysilee’s tears slowly dried at the sight, then she looked back at Wyatt’s grave with a smile. It was a moment in time that she didn’t want to leave, but she would have to if she didn’t want to be caught by peacekeepers, or worse, her parents. Maysilee’s heart pumped in her chest, with a new found comfort that the loose canons will always stay together, in more ways than one. Maysilee popped out the coin out of the necklace, and then placed it on his grave, right next to the forget-me-nots, her heart full of love for him.

“I love you Wyatt Callow, more than you could ever know.”

WYATT MY SON WAS SHOOTING SHOTS FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE. (I miss him and maysilee and so many others lost in SOTR)
