Just give me true love and understanding

Notes:

Here is my offering to the fandom in celebration of the drought coming to an end.
(and a consolation to me because I'm once again back in school)

Enjoy!

Work Text:

It was a Saturday evening and DJ was sitting in Superfish's living room. He had started coming over more frequently recently under the excuse of Superfish having more resources for their ingredient search at his place.

Earlier, Superfish had offered to make dinner, so now the teal-haired boy was standing in the kitchen, his back facing DJ. A tune was playing from the record player on the nearby table.

When DJ had first started coming over, he had noticed that Superfish had the habit of listening to music while cooking. While some of the music DJ recognised, most of it was different that what the boy was used to hearing.

After a while of sitting around, DJ grew bored. Not only that but the tantalising smell coming from the kitchen had caused his hunger to intensify. With a groan, the boy got up and made a beeline for the stove.

“Sooo, what're you making this time?” DJ queried, leaning over Superfish's shoulder to steal a glance at the pan.

Startled, Superfish jerked a bit to the side before regaining his usual smug composure. “Oh, it's just pasta with cream sauce, tuna and some vegetables.”

“Hmm.” DJ answered.

They continued on in silence for a couple minutes. During such silent periods in this very house, DJ's mind tended to stray.

Truth be told, the boy had developed a crush on the witch a while back. In the beginning, he wrote it up as annoyance. Superfish had been mildly insufferable from their very first meeting after all.

However, as time went on, DJ started realising that he felt something more personal for the teal-haired witch.

Now, when standing in that other person's kitchen and watching him perform a task as mundane as cooking, DJ yearned for something more. He wanted for those simple everyday moments to keep happening but also wondered what would happen if he was brave enough to admit his feelings. Could they become something more?

Those various thoughts whirled in DJ's mind. Meanwhile, Superfish had finished cooking and put away his ‘Bite the Chef’ apron (which DJ had admittedly made fun of the first time he saw it.)

“Alright, it's done. Time to eat!” Superfish plated the food. However, after receiving no response, he turned around and put a hand on his hip while waving the other in front of the brown-haired boy's face. “Hellooo? Earth to DJ! Didya get lost in there or something?”

DJ blinked at Superfish blankly before stammering. “N-no, sorry! It's nothing.”

Superfish shrugged and went back to the food.

The two ate in silence. Despite his flamboyant personality, DJ had to admit that Superfish knew how to cook and seemed to take his skills quite seriously.

While they were enjoying their meal, music kept playing in the background. Curious, DJ finally asked “Is this some sort of witch music? Do witches even make music?”

“No.” Superfish replied, waving the fork in his hand around. “Witches don't really do much when it comes to art. If they did, it'd probably be as awful as their food anyways. Plus, this human music is really interesting, I must say.”

“Well, that's sad. I really wouldn't like living in Obscaria then. No good food, no music. Witches are missing out on so many fun things!”

“Yeah…” Superfish mumbled while picking up their plates and putting them in the sink.

“Then, witches must not dance either, right?”

“Huh?”

“Since you have no music I mean.” DJ stated. “No music means nothing to dance to.”

“They don't. I have never either. I don't really know if it would be fun at all though. It's just moving your body. Seems pointless and stupid.” Superfish whined, as he usually did. DJ was having none of it though.

“THAT'S where you're wrong, fish boy! Dancing is SO much fun!”

“Oh yeah?” Superfish replied provocatively.

“Yeah!”

Without delay, DJ grabbed the other boy's hand. Stunned, Superfish could do nothing but follow.

DJ stopped in the middle of the room where there was more of an open area. He faced Superfish and grabbed at his arms.

The teal-haired boy was being pushed and pulled around. Not long after, he let out a chortle and gave in. So it really WAS fun!

The boys clumsily danced around, occasionally tripping but constantly laughing nonetheless.

That's it! DJ thought. I'll finally tell him!

He couldn't hold his feelings for himself anymore. Staying over at the other's house was one thing, but dancing around while laughing and having such a great time was making it impossible to keep to himself.

However, just as he was about to say something, Superfish grabbed at his shoulders. After a moment of heavy breathing from the exertion, the witch near shouted out.

“I- I think I might like you!”

…What?

This was a shock to DJ. He definitely had NOT expected the other to say anything of the sort.

“I mean, I don't really know what it is that I'm feeling. It's just that I keep getting this tight feeling in my chest which has been getting more and more frequent and it only happens with you so-” Superfish stammered through the statement, waving his arms around and speaking so fast that DJ could barely keep up.”

“Alright, stop it right there.” DJ took hold of Superfish's wrists. “We'll get nowhere with this if you keep panicking.”

“I was not-!”

“Yeah yeah, alright.” DJ smiled. “Actually, I was about to say the same thing.”

“What?” It was Superfish's turn to be confused.

“I've liked you for a long time, Superfish. In the beginning I couldn't admit that to myself because you were so unbelievably annoying-”

“Hey!”

“-BUT! Eventually I realised that maybe I liked that about you too.”

Superfish was staring at DJ in a daze. He… liked him back?

Suddenly, Superfish's arms wrapped around DJ's shoulders. His face buried in the other's shoulder, the witch mumbled, “I don't think I've ever had someone appreciate me like this.”

DJ returned the hug, gently swaying the other around.

He thought a bit about Superfish's descriptions of other witches. How they sounded as anything but pleasant. How DJ had long suspected that Superfish had gone through way more than he was letting on.

“I'm sorry to hear that.” He comforted, pressing a kiss to the boy's teal hair. “I'll make sure you'll receive lots of affection from now on.”

Notes:

The dish Superfish was making was inspired by the one kind of food the almighty 'tism makes me cook constantly. (Seriously, it's so good)

I just wanted to write about them dancing.
