Chapter Text
The late bell rang, pounding through the brunette's head and jolting him awake. He had fallen asleep in class. Again. Class hasn’t even started yet!
“Dazai!” Kunikida whispered, “What are you doing? We have a test tomorrow! You need to know this!” Doppo Kunikida was your average teacher’s pet. Smart, polite, a permanent stick up his ass- you get the gist. Sitting next to Osamu Dazai was his worst nightmare in many ways. Dazai never actually did any work in class. He either slept or wrote in his notebook about…. whatever the hell he was thinking about. (Kunikida actually had no clue what was in that notebook of his. Sure he had his own with his own ideals and life plan but Dazai was a mystery). But when it came down to it Dazai was undeniably an amazing partner to work with. Whether it be on projects, presentations, or even just group work in class when he and Kunikida worked together that work got DONE.
“It’s fiiiine… It’s just a review day,” Dazai sighed out.
“It is not ‘fine’! Wake up Dazai!” At this point Kunikida was damn near about to smack Dazai with his book of ideals in front of the whole class.
“Dazai! Kunikida! Care to share to the class what’s so important that you two are whispering over there whilst I’m teaching?” A collective “oooooh” emerged from their classmates. Getting called out in front of the whole class for talking while the teacher was talking was like hell for him. Kunikida had a near perfect track record in this class. His temper however… that was another story. That was what got him in trouble. Dazai only got in trouble because of his slacking off (but his grades did NOT reflect that).
When they got out of class Kunikida had his head held low in shame. He was a good kid! Not someone who whispers in the back of the class! Dazai didn’t seem so stressed though. He got reprimanded on the daily for stupid things so he wasn’t all that phased.
“Kunikida senpai! Dazai senpai! How was class?” Atsushi ran up to the two of them. He was a second year student while Kunikida and Dazai were both third years. They found him in his second week of school getting picked on by some older students. After they defended him from the bullies they were like his only friends.
“Atsushi… The worst thing has just happened…” Kunikida murmured solemnly.
“We just got reprimanded for talking while the teach’ was talking. No biggie!” Dazai patted Kunikida on his back with that infuriatingly mischievous grin plastered on his face. “Class was fine! We just did some dumb review since we have a test tomorrow.” Dazai turned his head to Atsushi, “How was your class kid?”
“Oh! It was good! I had class with Akutagawa again though….” A nervous smile settled in Atsushi’s face when the thought crossed his mind. Since Atsushi and Akutagawa’s surnames both began with ‘A’ they were forced to sit together in history class. For some stupid reason his history teacher say people alphabetically.
“Akutagawa? Which one?” Kunikida seemed to forget his earlier sulking in favor of the surname that left Atsushi’s mouth.
“There’s two?” Atsushi tilted his head. He only knew about Ryunosuke but he had never met Gin before.
“Ryu’s got a little sister! You didn’t know? Gin!”
A student with black hair tied back into a spiky ponytail and a mask standing over by a locker lifted their head and looked around at the name. When she spotted Dazai he waved over at her cheerfully.
“Oh wow… I had no clue!” Atsushi said with surprise in his voice. “Well I meant Ryunosuke Akutagawa. Y’know? The guy who wants to beat me every other day?”
“He doesn’t want to beat you! Just… minorly injure you!” Dazai cheered.
“That’s still bad Dazai.” Kunikida side-eyed Dazai. Kunikida was always one for technicality.
“I just wish we could get along!” Atsushi exclaimed exasperatedly, “I don’t even know what I’ve done to him for him to be so mad at me!” Akutagawa had always been unfriendly with Atsushi. He always took whatever chance he got to say a mean comment, mess up his class work (by shoving it off his desk or something), or hell even straight up threatening him. When he came across Atsushi’s instagram account he made 7 alt accounts just to spam report him! But to be fair this isn’t exactly new for Akutagawa… He does evil shit with everyone. He kind of just… hates. Like he hates everyone equally! (Well except for his sister obviously but you get the idea.)
“Aw don’t be like that! I’m sure you’ll get along one day! It just takes a little time to get him to open up!” Dazai cheered again.
“Didn’t you bully the hell out of that kid or something?” A feminine voice cuts into the conversation. Yosano walked up to them and casually inserted herself into the conversation.
“Okay I didn’t bully him! We were friends, it's just that… I wasn’t really the best person at the time….” Dazai weakly defended himself. In his first and second year he was a very troubled kid. He was a delinquent and didn’t hang around a good crowd of people. If it weren’t for his friend Odasaku he would probably be in prison by now.
Suddenly a fellow student with ginger hair walked up to the quartet. Chuuya held his hand out towards Dazai as if expecting something from him.
“Uh… C- Chuuya? Can we help you?” Atsushi asked nervously. Chuuya was Dazai’s best friend before they had some falling out when Dazai stopped hanging out with that bad crowd. They didn’t really talk much now.
“Give me back my calculator you idiot.” Chuuya hissed out. At that point Dazai reached into his bag and passed Chuuya a graphing calculator.
“Oh yeah! Chuuya and I share a calculator for math class!” Dazai plucked the hat from Chuuya’s head, “No hats in school Chuuya! Don’t you know the dress code?” Dazai lifted his arm out of Chuuya’s reach so he couldn’t get it back.
“Give it back you little-“
“GET TO CLASS! ALL OF YOU!!” A teacher's voice called out from down the hall forcing them all to suddenly be more aware of the time they had before the next bell rang.
The quintet of students scattered in different directions to get to their next classes.
