the return of a nightmare

Summary:

xiao had never called venti for help, even when he was in serious trouble. it was not in his nature to reach out, so of course he wouldn't. yet one day, while venti was out idly exploring liyue for fun, he happened upon xiao fighting the remains of a dead god at qingxu ruins, seemingly quite badly hurt.

Notes:

this started as a fun little activity on the xvx discord server to do a bit of a choose your own adventure story where people could select the direction the story using the discord polls. it ballooned a little out of proportion, and went into more exploration than i expected in multiple ways, so i decided to archive it here as well as a fun little read for anyone who might want to check it out~

do note that every chapter is written on the day the poll results come out, and i try to limit myself to not bombarding with overly lengthy updates in general, so there are limitations to my writing. it also started off somewhat silly, although the direction it has currently taken...

i also don't usually publish work with no capitalization like this, but for the ~silly~ vibes it started off with, that's how i have been writing it, and so i have published it (mostly) as written.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

"a clever trick," the mondstadtian general scoffed, "yet clearly forgery." without the army at their side, the hungry untrained common people were no match for the aristocracy, and little by little, he watched as his people turned his back against the idea of freedom. "it is not so bad," a faceless voice said. "it is only the slaves who suffer and they are no mondstadters."

"better them than us."

the gates would not open and above them, the sinister smiles of the crooked aristocrats seemed to mock them. "fight us," they goaded. "and the city may well be destroyed instead. is this what you wish for, oh god of freedom? to impose your will onto our culture?"

"a clever trick," venti murmured under his breath. "yet clearly an illusion." focusing, he pointed his arrow towards where the most malice could be felt and released a fierce shot…
