Chapter Text

The door creaked wide open, the same as it had done a million times. But this was different, as a second pair of legs walked through the door before it shut.

“ Surely a place you’ve got, Hyper. ” Subspace said, a small smile creeping up on his face. It felt nice not having his mask on. Being able to breathe and speak as she normally would. Hyperlazer’s mask was intended to be designed with the additional feature of filtering out poisonous gases, whether that was for smoke bombs while he was on assassination missions, or for speaking to the head of the blackrock robotics lead in his own apartment was up for interpretation.

” Apologies, it’s not much. ” Hyperlazer sighed, letting a breath of air fill his mask with humiliation. It was a dream to move out of his run down flat, yet dreams are never normally reached in his eyes, getting with a scientist was his one lucky fantasy. He can expect downfall from here on out.

Princess ran over, her first action being to nuzzle her owner, constantly making her several ‘meows’ and ‘purrs’ of enjoyment while doing so. Sometimes Subspace thought Princess loved hyperlazer more than he did. He didn’t like thinking about that. Yet the more they dwelled about it, the more it took over his mind, and soon her train of thought had been suppressed by anger itself. Before He could let out just a sentence of his thoughts, they were abruptly interrupted by their mercenary.

” Sorry, I just need to put out her food. Then we’ll be able to talk, Okay? ” He seemed tired, yawning and stretching his arms while hanging up his coat. It was a long day of work after all. Constantly committing homicide took something out of a inphernal, Hence leading to Subspace calling his dear’s fatigue justified.

“ Thats fine. I’ll look around while I wait. ” The better thing to do in this situation was to ask for permission, Subspace isn’t like that. Fortunately for him, Hyperlazer didn’t really care. He trusted him just enough for him to look around, despite being a bit uncomfortable about it. He didn’t want him finding out about the pathetic secrets that laid in his home. He couldn’t even bare the thought of explaining his pitiful confidential possessions to the scientist. What if they broke up beacuse of it? What if The researcher hated him for it, and they never spoke again? Maybe he should’ve said something. A simple ‘Please don’t’ or a ‘I don’t feel all right with that’ could’ve prevented these worries, yet his partner had already started looking through cabinets, picking up photos of his cat, snarling and furrowing his eyebrow before grunting and putting them back.

—————————

The harsh noise of a tin can opening filled the kitchen, along with the loud ‘plop’ of wet cat food falling into a bowl barely big enough for it, Princess did have a big appetite, after all. The Ranger then went to grab some dry cat food from a kitchen cupboard below him. Bending down and outstretching his hand just enough to reach the large bag of kibble. After some effort of trying not to overpour too much fodder from such a huge bag, Hyperlazer clipped the bag shut and chucked it under him. He looked at his cat’s meal, and found something to be missing. “ Sure. Why not. “ he muttered, just quiet enough for Subspace to not hear, as the blue inphernal grabbed some pet treats from the counter in front of him. He took a moment to study the pouch. It had been a while since he’d given these to Princess, so it would hopefully be a surprise for her. After this he realised the cat on the packaging looked suspiciously like his own, yet when holding it up to her, he came to a conclusion that it in fact, wasn’t.

Hyperlazer then took notice to how long it had been since he last spoke with the ‘phernal in his home, about fifteen minutes to be exact. He wasn’t used to having people over anyway, nor had he heard any russling or other noises from Subspace, which he thought nothing of. The mercenary then set down his cat’s food, and watched as she came running on all fours to start chowing down on her meal, not before a small ‘meow!’ Of appreciation.

The ranger then went to go find his coworker, or now, his love. He must be really focused if she’s being so silent. Knowing the scientist, he likes to be quite a loud and egotistical figure. So it’s very rare for her to go mute. If worst comes to worst he could-

Shit.

Subspace was looking through his closet. The mercenary took immediate action, speeding up to try to pull the inphernal away from the dresser, but it was too late.

Soft, fuzzy blue material was now in the scientists hands. Subspace had not noticed Hyperlazer, frozen in fear right behind him, and clothes so bright in a dull inphernal’s closet peaked their curiosity. Hence she took it out for further examination.

A light, aqua cat onesie, with navy blotches all over it, was now in his palms.

Subspace was astonished, shook. But not mad, just…intrigued. Why would Hyperlazer, a lifeless, lonely and honestly quite miserable inphernal, have a big, fluffy cat costume?

The researcher turned with the outfit in hand to confront his love, yet to his dismay, Hyperlazer was already there. Staring right back at him. His hands outreached in a panic.

“ You…Never told me about this? ” Subspace questioned,

” I’m sorry. I’m…I'm so sorry I-.. ” tears we’re starting to slip out of his burnt eyes, along with a small sobbing sound and his body positioning back into a straight standing up position, with his helmet titled towards the carpet floor.

“You think I’d be mad?” She said, letting a giggle escape from her rotted mouth, “Seriously hyperlazer?”

“You…don’t care?” The mercenary whimpered still crying a little.

“God I don’t give a shit. I just want matching ones.”

And soon a peaceful night at home turned to a cold night out on the single shopping street in blackrock, with the pair holding hand and hand walking down a pavement and into a clothes department.
