Chapter 1: 1.

Chapter Text

Chapter: 1.

Did he do it on purpose? Not really. It was mostly his greed for free goods.

When Renjun, the tour agent, asked a very logical question of if Johnny was going to Greece with his new wife, if it was a honeymoon trip, in Johnny’s head a small cannon of upgrades went off and he simply said yes faster than he was supposed to or supposed to in general.

He understands why Renjun might have thought so: the two of you are going to one of the most romantic Greek islands, you’re both in your late twenties and you’re going together. Of course, Renjun would think you’re a couple. But the tour agent went even further and decided you’re legally married.

Well…honeymoon suit sounded much better to Johnny than a standard double room. And Renjun said it would be doable - the upgrade for the newlyweds that is.

There was only one thing left: to explain it all to his best friend, to you, and not get murdered in the process.

You took it well. Too well.

Johnny is still pretty sure you’re planning a deliberate torture for him and the serene look on your face is just a pretence as the car is taking you from the airport straight to the hotel on the beach but he’ll take it if it means the two of you will get to admire the cliffs and bays of Zakinthos together from a much better accommodation.

It’s been a long flight and a not so long ride from from the airport to the hotel he’s chosen.

While the driver is bringing your suitcases, Johnny puts his arm nonchalantly around your shoulders.

Usually you would stiffen, you almost always do when he touches you. At first it used to hurt him but then he just realised you were this kind of person, not too tactile. Though he still cannot get the traitorous thought from his mind: when your other friends touch you - not everyone - but when Doyoung or Yuta or..or even Taeyong touch you, you don’t jump.

You don’t this time which surprises him, pleasantly surprises him.

“You have your ring?” He whispers, bending down - a lot - since you’re much shorter than him.

You produce a little sigh though a small smile doesn’t slide from your face. “Yes, darling.”

He clocks a band on your ring finger, gold with a small raw of diamonds that you usually wear on you middle finger, a family heirloom you called it once.

At the check-in he presents your passports and calls you jagi. It feels elevating but he’s not sure why. But he’s generally very excited for this trip so it must be it.

And obviously because he finally got you with him on vacation. The truth is Johnny has been feeling like were you drifting away from him recently - this whole year - and this trip in a sense was to bring you back to him because you’re his best friend and he will never be ready to lose you. Especially since there was no reasons to, good or bad. Even if they were Johnny would have fought to blood - he can say it again and again: he’ll never be ready to not have you in his life.

The room is very spacious with a grand view: the beach with the bluest water of Ionian Sea and the cliffs on the far left. There’s a bedroom, a living room with a big couch and armchairs along with a projector on the wall to watch films, a great touch in Johnny’s opinion. Outside on a terrace there are sun chairs and a coffee table and he can only imagine sunrises from this place.

In the bathroom there’s a bathtub and a shower on the opposite sides of the room, two sinks- all the attributes a couple needs.

And then there’s a bed.

The bed.

It’s huge and seems very comfortable.

And it’s just one bed.

“Sorry about the bed situation.” He tries to sound sheepish but he doesn’t really care if the two of you share. “I didn’t want to risk asking for a cot, they do think we are newlyweds.”

You chuckle softly. “You’re full of crap.”

A huge smile splits his face. You don’t sound angry.

“It’s fine Johnny.” With that you move to the walk-in closet to unpack. “I expected as much anyway.”

He moves too. Steps closer, shoulder holding the frame of the sliding door. He watches you bring out summer dresses and long skirts. Silky and flowy. The ones he’s never seen before. Have you bought those for the trip? Or for some man he doesn’t know?…he doesn’t know because you haven’t been that close recently.

He has to shake his head. No. He will make sure to bring your relationship back on track even though her has no idea why you keep withdrawing. This friendship is too important for him.

“The beach?” He offers as soon as he’s pretty sure you’re done hanging the items.

You grin and nod.

He has seen you in a bikini before. This one just looks particularly pretty on you. And he doesn’t think of it in a perverted way. You really look radiant in this olive-colorer two piece with big sunglasses and a sunhat that gives you a vintage vibe under the greek sun. Like you’re glittering under the rays of the afternoon sun.

Johnny smiles when you call for him to help you with the sunscreen. He diligently covers your back with the white-ish substance, his big hands on your delicate back.

“Now you.” You say in a tone that suggests no arguing.

So he doesn’t, letting you work on his back while he’s covering his his chest and hands with sunscreen.

You take your time, making sure you don’t miss a spot since the sun is at its peak. Your fingers are graceful when you massage the back of his neck which is open to the sun due to him cutting his hair short once again.

“I miss your long hair.” You mutter more to yourself than him.

“You like it more? When it’s long?” Johnny asks, goosebumps erupting over his spine - a reaction to your gentle touch.

“You look good with both.” You shrug. “But I guess there’s something about men with long-ish hair.”

“I’m growing it.” He isn’t. He has no idea why he said it.

You don’t give any verbal reply and just offer another relaxed slime.

Johnny gets up from the pool lounge chair. “I’ll check the water.”

You nod and reach for the book that’s been thoughtfully placed in your beach bag where he sneaked all his own stuff into also - even though he doesn’t need much, only his phone and wallet and a bag of jelly snacks…just in case you or him are hungry.

The water is perfect. Refreshing but not cold.

Johnny throws a look your way here and there while enjoying the sea.

He doesn’t really know why he does it, it’s a habit. He just needs to have you in his line of his sight, just in case, just to make sure you’re there and haven’t disappeared.

When he’s out you hand him a towel, it’s big and a pleasing lemon colour in sync with the hotel’s concept design.

Johnny pats the towel over his body before placing a pair of ray ben’s over his eyes and taking a place next to you under the umbrella.

“What are you reading?” He asks nonchalantly while making himself comfortable.

“Panic at hanging rock.” You reply, voice lazy and summer sounding and Johnny believes if your voice had a smell it would be honey-soaked lemons.

“Traumatising.”

“Summer vibes.” You reply.

“Still traumatising.” He insists.

Warm breeze kisses his cheeks and Johnny’s eyelids give way easily even though he wasn’t planning on a nap. You hum next to his ear, either thinking of something of reading some of the words aloud without even realising it. The world feels tranquil and then Johnny remembers no more as he nods off to sleep.

He’s panicking.

Johnny has opened his eyes and you’re gone.

Your bag and book and towel, everything is here but you’re not.

Blinking rapidly he tries to adjust to the sun while simultaneously trying to find you. Fingers shooting to his eyes, rubbing it off sleep, as his feet hit the ground, a very heated ground.

But before he can create worlds in his head - you being kidnapped by mermaids or a hot bartender from the hotel beach bar swept you off your feet (and obviously the first option comes to his head first) - there you are: a huge smile and huge sunglasses, and a bowl of fruits held between both hands.

“Johnny?” You notice his disheveled expression, of course, you do. You always do. “You okay?”

He nods, then nods again, hand coming to the back of his neck. “Yeah, sure am. Where…where did you go?”

An amused eyebrow showed up from underneath your sunglasses and you proceed to raise a bowl with fruits a little higher pointing it right at him.

“You should have told me! Should have waken me up…” Johnny is mumbling and he’s not sure why he sounds so lost and pathetic.

You cock your head a little to the side before saying, this time softer than before: “I think I’m capable of moving a couple meters to the bar area and getting us fruits on my own, don’t you agree?”

“Yeah, of course, it’s…”

But you pick a big tasty-looking strawberry from the bowl with your fingers and stretch your hand in his direction.

Johnny chuckles but it feels like he’s releasing a breath he didn't know he was holding. Instead of simply accepting the berry though he quickly dives in and snatches it from your fingers with his mouth.

You laugh. “You’re lucky you didn’t bite me.”

He grins. “What would you do then?”

“I can withhold naps in this trip.” You shot back.

“You’re cruel.”

You let your eyebrows do a little dance as a proof of your intentions before you both settle back, fruits between you on a small wooden table.

Ten minutes into snacking you get up again and leave your sunglasses on your towel. “I’m off to get some swimming in.”

You’re not usually a beach baby, you don’t like the sand of wet feet. You usually like the pool.

Johnny follows you standing up. “I’ll go too.”

“Quick then before I change my mind.” You’re already taking off in a run.

Johnny is faster than you generally but he lets you win.

You decide to not travel anywhere for dinner since there’s a seafood rooftop restaurant in the hotel that has genuinely the best reviews Johnny has seen for seafood restaurants in a long time.

You’re in a creamy white silk dress that might be mistaken for a nightgown but he supposes it’s fine since it’s still pretty hot even in the evening: the air still had no time to cool down. Though he’s not sure where to stand - to cover you from behind or maybe walk in front so that men wouldn’t be ogling you. Thank god you grab a shaw to drape it over your shoulders!

The table is with a view and it’s probably one of the most beautiful things he’s seen in his life: Zakynthos at night, like all the ancient myths came true, like he’s somewhere in the alternate reality. And you being here witnessing it alongside him turns the whole thing into something much more meaningful.

“Mr. And Mrs. Suh,” the server dressed in all black with the exception of a crispy white t-shirt offers each of you a smile and beautifully-printed menu. “On the first page you’ll see our specials for tonight and the rest of the menu on the next pages. If I may suggest: calamari di mare and bouillabaisse are our Chef’s favourites. But take your time. The starters are on the house and will be right up. Anything to drink maybe?”

You look up from the menu at him as if teasing: you’re Mr. Suh, you choose.

“White wine?” He checks with you. “A glass? Or shall we just take a bottle?”

“I don’t want to drink too much. Still jet legged.” You nod and turn to the server. “Something local maybe?”

“Of course, we have just the thing that will go with whatever you might choose next. It’s fresh with chamomile aroma.”

You smile in reply.

“Than it’s settled.” Johnny nods as well letting the other man know to leave the two of you alone for a couple moments.

You end up ordering the Chef’s choices and sharing. The two of you always done that.

After dinner the you agree to just call it a night even though before you wanted to go for a walk along the beach but the flight, first day on the beach and a tasty dinner changed your mind drastically.

He doesn’t mind. He doesn’t mind anything as long as the two of you spend this time together.

Settling for the night feels a little surreal: the two of you never shared a room before, on other vacations there were others around and he usually shared with Jaehyun or Ty, if things didn’t go his way - with Hyuck.

At first Johnny thinks it might be a little awkward, especially in a honeymoon suit, but you don’t seem to be weirded out, going slowly through your night routine: taking the remnants of make-up off and offering your night face cream that he gladly accepts since he didn’t bother packing nothing like it. Then you shoo him out to take a quick shower and come out refreshed in a rather small matching set of silky shorts and top. It’s not revealing or exposing but Johnny is still offered a view of your bare legs. He tries not to be a pervert and stop staring but he’s a man and there are legs right in front of his eyes. So he blinks once-twice but still stares. And when he stares for too long Johnny exudes himself and leaves you to get a shower.

You’re already in bed when he’s out and you’re on the side opposite the one he’s used to even though he didn’t voice it. It’s like you just know.

He gets under the sheets.

“Can you get the lights?” You mumble half asleep, voice muffled by the pillow and the fact that you’re turned to to the other side.

“Sure.” He flicks the switch on the wall above the bedside table and the room is momentarily submerged in darkness.

The sound of waves is the sleep music he needs. Johnny loves big cities wether it’s Chicago, LA, Paris or Seoul. But time flies in big cities. Here he can feel it, the time. Everything is so slow here that he can actually feel the passage of it. He has the urge to take your hand, for you to feel it with him. But he doesn’t dare. He usually would at least try before you swap it away. But not now.

“Goodnight, Johnny.” You whisper.

“Goodnight.” He replies quietly, eyes closing to your slow breathing and the waves just below the window.
