Work Text:
Cypress never really spoke to others about how it felt to exist in the world between life and death. Within his lamp, where he would restore his aether, the world around him was minimal.
It was liminal.
The world was quiet, swirling blacks and purples that stretched on for eternity.
Sometimes, the hyur was certain he could hear a gentle hum, though after spending so many years using it as his resting place, he wondered if it was simply him imagining it to fill the absence of sound.
Being crazy after so long… maybe just hearing a hum isn't that bad when I know what the alternative is.
Being in his resting world, he could rest from it all.
The life of a Grimm Reaper was never easy.
Constantly filled with noise, with the stress that came with guiding souls away to the lifestream.
The way his body felt heavy and ached when he returned from the edge of final death.
With my life being so much busier thanks to Theo… with the Scions.
It's all a bit much.
Back in his resting world- in this liminal space, he could feel as though he was in a somewhat comfortable blanket.
Though actual blankets made it a lot cozier when he was in life, there was something just… relaxing about being surrounded by the void.
Nothing could hurt him.
Nothing could pain him.
He could just exist and then return when Theo arrived by his lamp, which often stayed in the viera's room as of late.
He knows when I am resting… It's somewhat endearing that he has memorized when I am.
Said something about the different ways in which my lamp glows.
Cute.
As if he knew, Cypress could sense someone was near his lamp.
Of course it was Theo. Who else could it be?
There was a slight tap on the outside, one that Cypress felt in his heart.
He shuddered and began to pull himself away from his safe space.
Maybe one day this liminal space will lose its appeal…
And maybe one day I will find the same rest in Theo's arms.
Maybe…
