“The only love worthy of the name is unconditional love.” – John Powell
Jim hits the mat hard enough to knock the breath out of his lungs. The gym lights glare white overhead. The air smells of clean sweat and the faint metallic tang of the ship’s recycled atmosphere. Spock is already moving, fluid and precise, one knee braced against Jim’s hip, long fingers locking around his wrist.
“Yield,” Spock says, voice steady, almost conversational.
Jim grins up at him, still half winded. “Not a chance.”
He twists, using the momentum Spock isn’t quite expecting, and they roll. The practice mats give under their weight with a soft, repeated thud. Jim ends up on top for half a second before Spock reverses it again, pinning both of Jim’s wrists above his head with effortless control. Their faces are close. Spock’s breath brushes Jim’s cheek, warm and even. A thin sheen of sweat darkens the black fabric of Spock’s training shirt along the collarbone.
Jim feels every point of contact: the hard line of Spock’s thigh between his own, the controlled pressure of those hands, the heat rolling off Vulcan skin. His pulse is already elevated from the sparring. It spikes higher for an entirely different reason.
“You’re holding back,” Jim says.
Spock’s eyebrow lifts a fraction. “I am applying precisely the amount of force required to neutralize you without injury.”
“That’s not what I meant.”
Something shifts in Spock’s gaze. The dark eyes stay locked on Jim’s. Neither of them moves. The gym is empty this late in the night cycle; only the low hum of the environmental systems fills the silence between their breathing.
Spock’s grip on Jim’s wrists loosens just enough to become something else. Not a hold. A touch. His thumbs brush once, deliberately, over the sensitive skin on the inside of Jim’s wrists.
“Jim.”
Just the name. Quiet. Careful.
Jim’s mouth goes dry. “You’re about to say something that’s going to wreck my concentration for the next week, aren’t you?”
“I have considered the logical and illogical aspects of this conversation for fourteen months, six days, and approximately eleven hours.” Spock’s voice stays level, but the green flush along his cheekbones deepens. “Logic has proven insufficient.”
Jim stares up at him. The weight of Spock’s body is still pinning him, but the tension has changed. It’s no longer about the match.
“I desire you,” Spock says. “Not as my commanding officer. Not solely as my friend. I desire you as one desires a mate.”
The words land like a physical blow. Jim has wanted this—wanted the gravity of Spock’s attention turned fully on him, wanted the permission to stop pretending the charged silences on the bridge were only professional respect. He’s wanted it in the middle of the night when the ship is quiet and his hand is on himself and he’s imagining green-tinged skin under his palms. Hearing it spoken aloud, while Spock is still half on top of him on the gym mats, still knocks the air out of him all over again.
He opens his mouth. Nothing useful comes out.
Spock waits. Then, with the same deliberate control he uses in a fight, he releases one of Jim’s wrists and brings his hand to Jim’s face. Cool fingertips brush the side of his jaw, then settle more firmly, thumb resting just below the hinge. The contact is careful. Testing.
“If this is unwelcome,” Spock says, “you need only say the word.”
Jim’s voice comes out rough. “It’s not unwelcome. God, Spock, it’s the opposite of unwelcome. I just… need a second.”
Something softens in Spock’s expression. The remaining hand still pinning Jim’s wrist shifts, fingers sliding down to lace loosely with Jim’s. Spock leans in. The first kiss is almost careful—closed mouths, the soft press of lips against the residual salt of sweat. Jim feels the controlled strength in the body above him. He reaches up with his free hand, grips the back of Spock’s neck, and pulls him closer.
The second kiss isn’t careful at all. Spock’s mouth opens under his, and the taste is clean and faintly metallic, mixed with the clean exertion of the sparring. A low sound vibrates in Spock’s chest. Jim answers it with one of his own. His hand slides down Spock’s back, finding the damp heat of the training shirt, then slipping underneath to bare skin.
Spock breaks the kiss just enough to speak against Jim’s mouth. “I have imagined the exact temperature of your skin. The sounds you would make. I find the reality… preferable.”
“You’ve been holding out on me,” Jim murmurs.
“I was uncertain of welcome. I am no longer uncertain.”
Spock shifts his weight, easing off just enough that Jim can sit up. They stay close, knees almost touching on the mat. Spock’s hands map Jim’s shoulders, the curve of his neck, the line of muscle still warm from the workout. Every touch is precise and deeply sensual—the slow drag of fingertips over fabric, then skin, the careful pressure of a thumb against the pulse point in Jim’s throat. Jim feels himself responding, heat coiling low in his belly, the familiar ache of wanting sharpened by years of denial and the sudden, overwhelming nearness of Spock’s body.
Jim’s fingers find the hem of Spock’s shirt and push it upward. Spock helps, stripping it off in one smooth motion. Bare green-tinged skin, lean muscle, the faint sheen of sweat. Jim maps the flush rising along Spock’s chest, the way the pointed ears darken, the fine tremor that runs through long fingers when Jim’s mouth finds the sensitive place just below Spock’s ear.
Spock’s breath catches. “Jim—”
“I’ve got you.”
They move without hurry. Training clothes come off in stages. The mats are cool against Jim’s bare back when Spock guides him down again. Spock’s body is all controlled power and unexpected heat. He answers every discovery with equal attention—lips, teeth, the careful press of fingertips that leave Jim aching and breathless. When Spock’s hand finally slides lower, wrapping around him with perfect control, Jim’s head falls back against the mat.
“Look at me,” Spock says quietly.
Jim does. The intimacy of that gaze is almost more overwhelming than the touch itself. He reaches for Spock in turn, finding the hard length of him, the different texture, the way Spock’s hips push forward into his grip with a soft, broken inhale.
They move together after that, mouths open against each other’s skin, hands learning and giving. The empty gym fills with the quiet sounds of breath and the low, almost musical notes Spock can’t quite suppress. Jim loses track of time. He’s aware only of heat and pressure and the rare knowledge that Spock is choosing this—choosing him—without holding back.
Afterward they lie still on the mats, limbs tangled, the overhead lights still glaring white. Spock’s head rests against Jim’s shoulder. One long arm is draped across Jim’s waist, fingers tracing idle patterns on his skin. Their discarded training clothes lie in a small heap nearby.
Jim turns his head and presses a kiss to the top of Spock’s hair. “This changes things.”
“Yes.” Spock’s voice is steady, but the arm around him tightens a fraction. “I find I do not regret the change.”
Jim smiles into the quiet. “Good. Because I’m not giving this back.”
Spock’s fingers pause, then resume their slow movement. Somewhere in the distance the ship continues its night-cycle hum. Jim lets his eyes close and simply breathes.
