Work Text:
Hiccup Haddock and Astrid Hofferson were relaxing together on a cliffside after a long day of work. The Edge, their island outpost, was undergoing repairs after a particularly disastrous storm, and this specific day had been dedicated to fixing up the giant dragon stable's doors. They had taken a beating after the storm, and some of the panels warped beyond repair. The work was exhausting, but to Hiccup and Astrid, the free time in the evening made it worthwhile.
Both Astrid and Hiccup were leaning up against a large boulder embedded in a slope of earth. They had brought a blanket and some food with them to have a moment away from everyone else on the island at dinner. Being Vikings, their island-mates could be quite rowdy, which was "the last thing" Astrid wanted to be around at the end of a tiring workday.
They had both finished with their meals a long while ago and had been sitting peacefully, enjoying each other's company. Hiccup gazed up at the starry night sky, which was crystal clear and quite dark because of the late hour. "Y'know, I never really take the time to appreciate how amazing our view is here on the Edge." Hiccup mused, eyes following a shooting star that was making its way through the sky.
Astrid leaned into his side, resting her head on his shoulder as she watched the sky with him. "You're right. I spend so much time training and trying to get everybody to get along that I never really take in our view either." She lifted her head off Hiccup's shoulder and smiled. "We should come out here more." She met his eyes and marveled at how they reflected the night sky so beautifully, his green irises adding a touch of beauty to the bright bursts of light from the stars.
Hiccup smiled back at her, shifting his weight so that he could wrap an arm around her shoulders, pulling her close. "Bonus is that we can actually hear ourselves think!" He joked, squeezing her arm as she lay her head on his shoulder once more.
"Yeah, it does get really annoying dealing with the twins blowing up everything, and Snotlout just complaining about them over and over and over and- "
"And over. I know." Hiccup sighed in contentment, resting his head on top of hers. He smiled once more to himself as he felt Astrid snuggle closer to him. "Are you cold?" He said with the slightest bit of concern in his voice.
"A bit. But it's not that bad." She reassured her boyfriend. "I should really get some warmer clothes though… Winter's going to hit the Edge soon." She mused, shivering slightly as the breeze picked up.
"We can head to Berk in the next week to grab some stuff for the Edge. We need to restock on some of our food rations as well, because someone keeps on eating through all our bread." Hiccup closed his eyes as he spoke, the tiring day catching up to him.
"Mm. Tuff keeps taking all the bread to share with Chicken. Says it brings them 'closer'." She laughed softly, her eyelids beginning to droop as well. "Thor, today was exhausting!" She waited for a response from Hiccup, who was almost completely out. "Hiccup? I think we should go back to our huts now. I'm getting really tired."
"M'kay." Hiccup murmured, reluctantly sitting up straight. He squeezed Astrid closer to him quickly, kissing the top of her head before letting go. She smiled up at him and he grinned back sleepily. He nearly fell asleep on his feet –well, foot– while his girlfriend stood and dusted off her clothes, until he felt her hand ruffling his messy hair.
Hiccup cracked his eyes open and sleepily blinked at Astrid, who was holding out her hand. He took it gently, not dropping it, and drowsily smiled at her as they began to walk back to their respective huts. Hiccup noticed how the still gleaming stars reflected in her eyes, admiring how the bright stars mixed with icy blue.
When they made it to Astrid's hut, he turned to face her, brushing her bangs out of her eyes as he said goodnight. Astrid kissed him quickly, smiling and then turning around to walk into her hut. Just before she entered, she turned around to face her betrothed once more.
"Good night, Hiccup. Love you." She smiled at him affectionately.
"I love you too, Astrid." Hiccup gave her his familiar, lovable grin. "Good night."
