Work Text:
The biological markers of a lie are surprisingly consistent, even when the heart is breaking. Emily is dressed for a dinner that isn't happening, wearing a silk slip dress that clings to her curves like a second skin, the fabric humming against her thighs. The clock ticks with a violent, rhythmic precision. This is the fourth time. Four dates, four absences, and a trail of apologies that Emily—a woman who reads micro-expressions for a living—has categorized as ‘unreliable.’
She sends the text: *We’re done. I can’t keep reading the gaps where you should be.*
Twenty miles away, Alexis is not lying. She is vibrating with a raw, systemic shock, lying flat on a sterile hospital cot. Her breath comes in jagged, shallow hitches because every expansion of her lungs feels like a blade scraping against her costal cartilage. A freak accident, a crushed rib, and a sudden, blinding surge of heat radiating from her chest has left her incapacitated.
When the phone buzzes on the bedside table, the vibration rattles through the mattress, echoing in Alexis’s bones. She reaches for it, her fingers trembling, and reads Emily’s finality. The emotional blow is visceral; it hits her like a physical punch to the gut, stealing what little oxygen she has left.
She tries to type a response, but her muscles are locked in a state of high-tension stress. The heat of the hospital—the scent of antiseptic and old linens—feels suffocating. She wants to scream, to feel Emily’s hands grounding her, to have that clinical gaze soften into something primal and protective. Instead, there is only the silence of the ward and the crushing weight of a relationship collapsing under the gravity of a misunderstood absence.
