I am Shane Hollander Canadian Hockey Player for the Ottawa Centaurs.
Hi Reddit, I’m Shane, four-time Stanley Cup winning champion. My personal life became global news when I became only the third active MLH hockey player to come out as gay and married my 'rival.' Ask me anything.
Whilst you are here, please check out The Irina Foundation and our Game Changers hockey camps. We remain committed to supporting mental health charities across Canada as well as improving access to hockey for children in Ontario and Quebec.

What advice would you give to a young person wanting to make it to the MLH?
▲ 615 ▼

SHollanderAMA ✓
Practice, Practice, Practice. To make it to the very top, you have to live and breathe hockey. There are so many other guys battling it out for so few spots at the very top you have to be on top of your game at all times, no matter what is going on in your life, especially when you are young, and even then you might just not be good enough. It’s brutal, and there’s no room for error.

If you weren’t a hockey player, what do you think you’d be?
▲ 589 ▼

SHollanderAMA ✓
That’s a hard question because I just can’t imagine my life without playing hockey. I think if for whatever reason I couldn’t be a hockey player, I’d still want to be involved in the game, so probably a hockey coach. Sorry, boring answer.

What’s your favourite thing about Rozanov?
▲ 1121 ▼

SHollanderAMA ✓
He’s similar to me in all the best ways but also the opposite of me in all the best ways.

Hockey aside, what are you most proud of in your life so far?
▲ 833 ▼

SHollanderAMA ✓
The Irina Foundation definitely. It’s crazy to see the real life impact this little idea Rozanov & I had one summer has had.
Last summer I went to visit some of the charities we donate to and hear some of the stories from the beneficiaries of the work they do. It was a truly humbling experience, and I was proud to see that so many people are living better lives because of the work we do.

When did you first meet Ilya and what did you think of him? Sorry, two questions in one there!
▲ 947 ▼

SHollanderAMA ✓
I’d seen game tape of him before I met him at the World Juniors in Saskatchewan back in 2008, and I thought he was an awesome player to watch. When I actually met him, I thought he was an asshole.

The pictures from the draft, you look furious. Were you really that mad that Rozanov took number one?
▲ 711 ▼

SHollanderAMA ✓
I was! Not to brag (although I suppose I am), ever since I’d been playing hockey from the age of three, I was always the best. It was always a given that I was number one. There was no one on my level. Then this guy comes along, and not only is he on my level but also supposedly better than me. He was so smug about it too! Looking back though, I think I was more suited to Montreal and him Boston, and that’s all it came down to.

Yes, Hayden and JJ are still two of my best friends.

What was your reaction to Scott Hunter coming out by kissing his boyfriend on the ice?
▲ 893 ▼

SHollanderAMA ✓
I was like, “whhaat?!!” I was watching with my parents, and I just stared in shock. I think when you’re going through something like that, you don’t really consider other people are dealing with the same thing, and when he did that, I realized I was less alone, and, to be honest, I never considered that coming out like that would be an option.

I worked for an MLH team back in 2019 and I remember rumours that you being gay was kind of an open secret. Are you aware of that?
▲ 679 ▼

SHollanderAMA ✓
Yes, I came out to my team long before I came out publicly. I had asked them to keep it under wraps, but I knew inevitably some people would talk.

Favourite cup win?
▲ 799 ▼

SHollanderAMA ✓
Toss up between the first one and the latest one. The first one was incredible because it was basically what my whole life had led up to. The latest one, with the Centaurus, was special because I felt like I had a point to prove, and I got to do it with the love of my life.

What was your family’s reaction to you being gay and dating your archrival?
▲ 766 ▼

SHollanderAMA ✓
They were not surprised I was gay and really supportive. They were surprised that I was dating Rozanov of all people and may have been a little suspicious at first, but he won them round super quickly.

What was your reaction to Ilya chopping off his curls?
▲ 889 ▼

SHollanderAMA ✓
Haha, my mom called it buzzcut-gate. I was a little sad because I love playing with his hair, but it’s hair I knew it’d grow back, and it’s what made him comfortable at the time. As long as he’s happy, I’m happy. The reaction online was wild, though!

How is it being the son of ultimate momager Yuna Hollander?
▲ 631 ▼

She seems to have gained a bit of a cult following, which is quite funny, but it’s awesome. I’m extremely lucky to have both my parents.

Are we allowed to bring up the Rose Landry of it all? 👀
▲ 919 ▼

SHollanderAMA ✓
Yes! Rose and I are still good friends. Our relationship was very brief, and we weren’t compatible in that way for obvious reasons, but there’s still a lot of love there.
▲ 4119 ▼

Rozanov4lyf
Do you think being with Rose prepared you for the media frenzy when you and Ilya got outed?
▲ 827 ▼

SHollanderAMA ✓
In a way, yes. Being with Rose taught me there was ‘hockey famous’ and ‘actual famous’, and how to deal with the insane invasion of privacy that comes with being actual famous, which happened when mine and Ilya’s relationship became public. I definitely prefer just being hockey famous.

How do you navigate playing on the same team as your husband? I don’t think before you guys there was ever really a precedent for a romantic couple playing a team sport together, certainly not at professional level.

Haahahahaha! Someone introduce this man to women’s sports!
▲ 1103 ▼

SHollanderAMA ✓
😂 It’s true it’s something that is more common in women’s teams, and we’re lucky enough to know some of those players who were able to give us some advice. We try to keep our work and home life as separate as possible. We don’t bring up work stuff at home or home stuff at work. So if I’m annoyed because Ilya misses a pass in practice, I pause that annoyance at home and won’t bring it up again until we’re back in the rink.
▲ 4382 ▼

IlyaRCentuarsCapt ✓
Won’t bring it up at home but will bring it up on Reddit! 😒

Do you think the league and the media's instance of painting you and Rozanov as rivals is what pushed you closer together?
▲ 823 ▼

SHollanderAMA ✓
I think partly. It was like we were the only two people in the world who truly got what the other was going through, being painted as ‘wonder kids’ at the same time, playing for similar teams, becoming captains young and then being constantly pitted in competition with each other. There was always that underlying understanding of each other that probably drove both of us to seek each other out.
However, I do think we would have always found our way to each other no matter what.

Did you leave the Metros for Ottawa to be with Ilya?
▲ 742 ▼
SHollanderAMA ✓
Not exactly, no. My plan was always to stay with Montreal until I retired, and that plan did not change when Ilya and I became a couple.
It was only after we came out and we lost the playoff series to the Centaurs that I realized I may no longer fit into their future, so Ottawa seemed like the natural choice. Yes, because it meant living and working with Ilya, but also because it’s my hometown, where my parents are, and I had no desire to leave Eastern Canada, but most importantly, they had a really good team, and I believed in the vision of what Wiebe and his team were building.
