The things that bind us

Summary:

Seven years after leaving Hogwarts, Ophelia Rookwood has built a quiet life far from the shadow of her father's name.

A talented healer at St. Mungo's, she has spent years proving that being Augustus Rookwood's daughter does not make her a Death Eater. But when a mysterious curse leaves a patient with strange magical residue, Ophelia discovers that the same dark magic is beginning to surface in artefacts across Britain.

Her investigation leads her back somewhere she had never expected: back to George Weasley.

Once, they were friends. Once, she thought they might become something more. Then the war tore their lives apart, and George was left grieving while Ophelia was left carrying the weight of a last name she never chose.

Now, with George hunting the same dark artefacts and Ophelia possessing a strange ability to hear magic, the Ministry has little choice but to put them on the same investigation. Along with her oldest friend Theo Nott, the three of them set out across Britain to uncover what is connecting the artefacts - and why the magic seems to be calling specifically to Ophelia.

Some things are better left buried.
Some memories refuse to stay that way.

PROLOGUE

When eleven-year-old Ophelia took her first step onto the Hogwarts express, hand in hand with her best friend Theo, she felt a rare sensation: hope. For the first time in her life, she sensed a sliver of freedom - a chance to escape the suffocating gloom of her childhood home and the bitter weight of her mothers judgement.

Her naive optimism dissolved into ash within hours.

The moment Professor McGonagall called out “Ophelia Rookwood” for the sorting hat, hostile whispers filled the Grand Hall and the warmth vanished. When the sorting hat roared “Slytherin” before it even brushed her hair she knew she would remain a prisoner to her surname for the rest of her life, dragging the shame behind her like a heavy iron chain.

Her years at Hogwarts became a lonely, agonizing countdown to graduation, her friend Theo serving as her sole anchor against the current. Unlike Draco Malfoy, who flaunted his family’s blood-line, Ophelia withdrew into the sanctuary of her textbooks, moving like a ghost through the Hogwarts corridors. No matter how hard she fought to prove she was different from her family' s legacy, the world had already sentenced her.

* * *

Ophelia huddled deeper into the velvet sofa, tucked away in the shadows in the deepest corner of the Restricted section. On her lap, her History of Magic book lay open and she had been staring at the same paragraph for twenty minutes. It was a quiet Friday night and the library was nearly empty, but she still preferred hiding. By her fourth year she had become desensitized to the lingering glares in the corridors, the casual name-calling in the courtyard and the menacing gestures from Gryffindors and Slytherins alike. Yet, desensitized did not mean stupid; she still refused to put herself in situations where she would be an easy target. Professor Dumbledore had been kind enough to grant her a permanent permission slip to the restricted section. It was her sanctuary. Her safe haven.

She was flicking through a heavy book about ancient runes, searching for anything that might appear on her upcoming exams, when the hairs on her neck stood up. Her hereditary intuition - the sharp, quiet radar for an altered magical space - told her she was no longer alone. Ophelia snapped her book shut, her hand instinctively dropping toward the wand hidden in her robes.

Leaning casually against a stone column at the edge of her alcove stood a tall, ginger boy. He was looking down at her expectantly, a charming, easy smile cutting through the dim library light.

“You’re Ophelia Rookwood, right?” the boy asked.
Instantly Ophelia drew back into the cushions, her pulse spiking frantically in her chest. A: Weasley. A prominent light-wizard family. Her mind instantly spiraled through the possibilities of a cruel prank - dumping bubotuber pus on her head or filming her with a hidden camera for a laugh.

Sensing her panic, he hoisted his hands up in the air, open and defenseless. “Hey, no hexes I promise, I’m here on serious business” he said, his tone was surprisingly warm, genuine even.

“Okay” Ophelia replied cautiously, sitting up a bit straighter but her hand still hovering close to her wand. “I am her. Yes”.
The boy seemed to relax, his shoulder dropping as he hurriedly slid down onto the sofa next to her. The sudden proximity was jolting; he smelled distinctively of autumn air and burned sugar.

“I’m George Weasley,” he said and extended his calloused and freckled hand to her.

She looked at his hand for a beat before hesitantly shaking it. “I know who you are,” she replied matter-of-factly. A tiny, rare smile threatened to tug on the corner of her lips.

Everyone knew the notorious Weasley twins. From a distance, Ophelia had secretly admired Fred and George’s chaotic masterpieces. When the rest of the students saw simple rule-breaking, her analytical mind saw the brilliant, highly advanced and experimental charm work to pull them off. Though he was two years her senior, sitting this close he looked remarkably boy-ish.

“Splendid” George grinned, his eyes crinkling. “You might guess what I’m here for then”.
“I’m intrigued” she admitted, the tight knot in her chest finally starting to loosen.

“The triwizard tournament,” George explained enthusiastically while leaning in, his eyes wide with an almost manic excitement. “Fred and I want to get our names in the Goblet of Fire. But Dumbledore is putting down an age-line”.

Ophelia blinked. “Okay? I’m fourteen, what do I have to do with bypassing an age line?”

“I’ve seen you in here” George said quietly, his tone shifting into something softer, more focused. “I know you study the architecture of wards. I asked around, and a few people mentioned you have a… talent for the weirdly complex stuff. Could you help us?”.

He leaned in even closer, practically invading her personal space, waiting for her answer. Ophelia’s mind felt momentarily scrambled from his closeness - she could see the faint amber flecks in his eyes. A dangerous, secret amusement flared inside her. Helping the Weasley twins sabotage Dumbledore's tournament? It was reckless, and entirely against her rule of staying invisible.

“What exactly do you want to know?” she asked softly.

George's smile turned triumphant. “Well we don’t even know where to start. How does an age line actually work?” he asked.

“First you’d have to dissect how the ward works” Ophelia began, her inner academic taking over as her hands started gesturing over the table. “Dumbledore won't use a standard boundary - he’ll bind the magic to a biological clock, likely tracking maturity. An aging potion won't trick a biological clock, unless… ”

Fifteen minutes flew by in a blur of hushed whispers. Ophelia mapped out an ancient warding structure on a scrap piece of parchment, lost in the puzzle and completely forgotten to be afraid of him. When she paused for a breath, she looked up, suddenly feeling self-conscious about her rambling.

George wasn’t looking at the parchment. He was looking at her, with a soft, incredibly gentle expression on his face.
“You’re like…really smart aren’t you?” he murmured.
Ophelia felt a hot, fierce blush creep up her neck. Not used to compliments - not used to anyone looking at with anything else but disgust - she quickly shrugged and looked down at her inkwell. “I just like mysteries”.

George stood up from the sofa, reluctantly breaking the bubble they had created. He needed to find Fred and report the new information. Before he stepped into the aisle, he swiftly spun back around, his amber eyes locking onto her hazel ones for one last time.

“Thanks, angel,” he whispered with a wink. He vanished into the dark library, leaving Ophelia completely alone again - accompanied only by the violent, terrifying flutter of butterflies in her stomach.

Author's Note:
Hi and welcome to The Things that Bind Us!

This is my own and very first piece of Harry Potter fan-fiction and I am so excited to finally share it! ❤️
I haven’t read much fan-fiction myself, but I felt there was never enough George Weasley fics out there so I decided to make my own.

This story gets very dark and deep at some moments, but no character deaths or infliction of harm will appear. No smut either, sorry!

The romance is very slow-burn, but I promise you’ll understand why as the story progresses and it will definitely be worth the wait!

Since the story is a post-war AU with an oc character, there will also be changes to canon characters and some magical traditions. And -> if you notice any spelling-errors or grammar, I apologize, english is not my first language!

I truly hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it! It’s a long story and still a wip but I hope you enjoy the ride with me! Feel free to leave comments and kudos - it motivates me to keep going!
