Work Text:
Carol has seen people pine for each other before. In the old world, in this new one. People who were meant to be together and people who really should not be. Seen their bodies and heart waste away as they yearned, some eventually got over it while others love sickness drove them into an early grave.
She's never seen people pine to kill each other before Negan and Maggie. It's sickening and fascinating to watch the way horror movies used to be.
They want to pick the other part, organ by organ until there was nothing left but the heart to pluck out. In her nightmares, she dreamed of them side by side each with the other's heart in their hand. Always looking hauntingly peaceful.
Neither will do it. There was a time when she thought maybe Maggie would or he would to ensure his survival.
They need the other to live to have a purpose. To run from, to hunt, to want something even if it is to kill. No matter how far apart they travel from the other, they'll find their way back to each other because they are empty inside without those things.
Carol saw it even if they couldn't or wouldn't. All that darkness and anger, pining to tear each other like vicious dogs was going to get people killed. Bad people, good people if there were any of those left. She just selfishly hoped that it would be away from her.
She pitied poor Hershel who has never known a version of Maggie that wasn't filled with such anger. He's heard more stories about the man who killed his dad than he ever has Glenn. Carol didn't need a crystal ball or read tarot cards to know that was going to screw the boy up.
