Gruvia Week Day 4 : Seasons

Work Text:

It started as an accident, the way most good things with Juvia did. A rainy afternoon a year ago with nothing to do, Gray had made the mistake of mentioning some show his old landlord kept talking about. Juvia had shown up at his door the next evening with the first three episodes downloaded onto a lacrima and a bag of popcorn under her arm, and that had been that.

One year later, they were seven seasons deep into a show that refused to end, and Thursday nights belonged to it.

Belonged to her, really, though he'd never phrased it that way out loud.

He heard her the quick double-knock, then the door easing open because she'd stopped waiting for him to answer months ago.

"Gray-sama, Juvia's here!"

"Door's always open for you," he said, not looking up from where he was clearing space on the coffee table.

She came in loaded down like she was stocking a bunker, not watching four episodes of a show. Two bags from the corner store swinging off one arm, a blanket she'd apparently decided his apartment didn't have enough of tucked under the other, and her own mug already in hand because she didn't trust his cups to be the right size for tea.

"I got the caramel popcorn, and the spicy chips you liked last time, and those little chocolate things Erza showed Juvia," she was already unpacking as she talked, lining everything up on the table. "And apples for this chocolate dip, because snacking is healthier if there is also fruit."

"We're not gonna eat all of that."

"Juvia knows." She said it cheerfully, like that had never been the point.

He almost said something about how last week's leftovers were still in his fridge from the exact same excuse, and the week before that, and the week before that, but he let it go. She'd hear it as a complaint, and it wasn't one. He liked opening his cupboards two days later and finding evidence she'd been there.

By the time he'd started the first episode, she'd already claimed her spot against his side, feet tucked up under the blanket, mug balanced against her knee. She didn't ask if it was okay anymore. He didn't know when exactly that had stopped being a question either of them needed to ask, only that he'd noticed its absence.

"Season six is over now," she said, mostly to herself, eyes bright on the screen as the opening credits rolled. "Juvia has been waiting all week for this. Do you think they'll finally — "

"No spoiling yourself out loud," he said, but there was no real warning in it.

"Juvia isn't spoiling, Juvia is theorizing." She said it primly, then immediately undercut it by grabbing his arm and squeezing like the theory itself was too exciting to sit still with. "But if they do, Gray-sama, if they do, Juvia will cry."

"You cried last season when the guy just moved apartments."

"He was sad about it!"

He huffed something close to a laugh and let his arm settle around her instead of just sitting there being held onto, and she made a small, satisfied sound and burrowed in closer, head finding the spot on his shoulder like it had been carved out for her. Which, at this point, it probably had.

The show played. He half-watched it. The other half of his attention kept sliding sideways, to the way she gasped without any restraint at every plot turn, the way her hand found his over the armrest without either of them deciding to do it, the way she smelled like the vanilla thing she used in her hair, mixed in now with caramel popcorn.

Ten minutes in, she sat straight up, nearly upending her mug. "Gray-sama, did you see that? He lied to her. Juvia knew he was lying, she said it last week!"

"You said a lot of things last week."

"Juvia said specifically — " She cut herself off with a sharp intake of breath as the scene turned, both hands flying to cover her mouth, and he watched her over the top of her own fingers, more entertained by her than by whatever had just happened on screen. When the tension broke a moment later she exhaled all at once and flopped back against him. "Juvia cannot believe this show."

By the second episode she'd stopped narrating and started just reacting, little noises that meant nothing to anyone but her, a hiss through her teeth at a betrayal, a delighted kick of her feet under the blanket when two characters she'd been rooting for finally shared a scene together.

Every one of them landed on him too, transmitted straight through wherever her body happened to be touching his at the time. When something devastating happened near the end of the episode, her grip on his hand went crushing and her whole face crumpled, and she turned it into his shoulder like she needed a second before she could keep watching.

"Told you," he said quietly, nodding at the screen.

"This is worse than the apartment thing," her voice muffled, not lifting her head.

He wasn't a guy who thought in big sweeping statements. He left that to people who liked hearing themselves talk a lot. But somewhere around the third episode, with her laughing quietly against his chest at something on screen he'd already stopped following along, it wasn't really about the show at all. He could take or leave it really.

Some weeks the plot was slow and he barely registered it. What he couldn't take or leave was this.

Her being all loud and unbothered, pressed right up against his side, snacks going untouched between them, her fingers laced through his. That was the part he looked forward to all week. That was the part he'd never told her, because it felt like something that would sound too silly even if he said it right, and he'd rather just keep doing it instead.

"Gray-sama." Her voice had gone soft and slightly distracted, eyes still on the screen. "Are you still watching?"

"'Course I am."

She twisted to look up at him, unconvinced, and he leaned down before she could call him on it and kissed the top of her head, right where her hair parted. She went still for half a second, even two years into two years into their relationship, and then melted back against him with a small, pleased hum, tightening her grip on his hand.

"Okay," she said, turning back to the screen. "Juvia believes you."

He didn't correct her. He was watching, just not the thing she thought he was.
