Bigots Get Blessings

Summary:

Kurt Wagner/Reader (Gender Neutral)
Kurt and Y/N share a Sunday evening after church.

Notes:

Christians in this universe believe that God created the Celestials. Millions of years ago, God ordered the Celestials to create the X-Gene as a test to humanity. To see people’s reaction towards something out of the norm. Creating mutants was also a test of strength, adding another challenge in his divine plan the build people fit for the future. Anti-mutant christians often choose to ignore the passages that say this in the bible, or often claim the bible is not always correct to bypass these verses.

Work Text:

You wait silently outside the church, bundled up in your coat against the cold winter wind while keeping Kurt’s bag safe with you too. You think about going inside to warm up, but another shiver rips through you. You could never put a finger on why churches gave you the creeps. Maybe it was just vibes, or trauma. Before you could decide to go inside or not the doors open and you glance up. Kurt comes out, carefully letting the doors close behind him again. You stand up, “How was church?” You ask softly, hugging your coat tighter as you stand. “It was good,” Kurt said with a gentle smile. With his bible tucked beneath his right arm, he reaches his left hand out, carefully taking your hand from your pockets to hold it. His 3 blue fingers wrapping around your palm fondly. “It is cold tonight, ja?” He glances over at you again, observing the way you shiver against the winter air. Pulling you closer, he guides your joined hands into his own pocket. You nod in response.

Kurt leads you down the stairs into the subway station. It’s much warmer, overwhelmingly so, with all of the people waiting for the next subway. Kurt leads you to a bench, letting you sit down as he takes his bag from you and tucks his bible inside. “Should we go home? Are you hungry?” He asks as he places the strap on his shoulder, making the bag go crossbody. You nod silently, “Yeah, I’m k- kinda hungry.” You say through your shivers, Kurt sits down next to you. “Relax, liebe. You’re so tense you’re making yourself shiver.” He pulls you closer, encouraging you to hug him and you oblige. Seeking warmth, you slip your hands under his coat, shoving your hands up his back inside his shirt. He yelps softly at the sudden cold sensation, “Y/N! Mein Gott your hands are cold, warn me next time.” He teases, keeping you warm in his arms as your hands roam across his fur, slowly losing that icy touch. “Sorry,” you mumble with a small giggle, pulling away to sit up now that you’re warm enough, pulling your hands out of his shirt and tucking them away in your pockets again.

The subway rolls along, slowly coming to a stop and letting passengers out. Kurt takes your hand again and stands, walking to the lines of people to get into the subway next. “I know you hate these, but it’s really cold out there, Schatz. Just hold my hand,” he assures you. The lines shrink as they go into the subway and Kurt guides you to follow the crowd, he easily finds 2 open seats next to the doors to sit at. You both settle down, placing you on the end so you don’t have to sit next to a stranger. “What do you want to eat? I was thinking we get your favorite,” he continues to hold your hand as you nod in agreement and Kurt begins to ponder what station you should get out in. As the subway finishes loading and begins to move again, Kurt glances up. His eyes meet an older woman juggling with the grab rails, a purse, and a cane. Kurt immediately releases your hand to stand up, “Miss, would you like my seat?” He offers kindly, offering a hand of assistance.

The lady nods, smiling up at Kurt in approval and she hands him her bag so she can sit in the seat beside you without trouble. “Thank you, young man.” The woman says in appreciation, settling in the seat and Kurt returned her bag. “Of course,” he says kindly, shifting to stand in front of you now as he held the grab rail above him. You watch him silently from
your seat in front of him, just admiring him. The announcer brings you back to reality, saying the next stop was station F. “That’s our stop, love.” You say softly, glancing up again. Kurt looks down at you and nods, reaching a hand out for you to stand so you both can get off when it stops. “We should watch a movie tonight,” he suggests, guiding you out of the subway when the doors open. “Sure, what should we watch?” You ask with a smile, your thumb unconsciously stroking the back of his palm, tousling the soft, blue fur. “Hm… we should watch something scary, ja? I’ll protect you if you get scared, liebes.” “Fine…” you mutter begrudgingly as you walk into your favorite restaurant together, still holding his hand.

The hostess greets you both and grabs menus, leading you to an open booth to sit. “Meine Güte, it’s warm in here. Let me help you with your coat,” he suggests fondly. Blue hands reach out to assist you in removing your coat and scarf, laying them neatly on the empty seat on the other side of the table and he removes his own coat and hat, sliding into the booth beside you. “What should we get?” You ask with a smile, turning to look at him and he looks at you as well, your faces inches apart and he chuckles softly. “Hm… pasta?” He asks, looking at the menu again as his pointed, blue tail flicks behind him, drifting over to settle softly around your hips. “I like the sound of that,” you agree , closing your menu as a waiter comes around with waters. “What can I get started for you two?” The man asks, glancing at Kurt’s demonic appearance wearily. Kurt orders both of your meals easily and the waiter takes the menus. “I’ll be right back, Schatz. I need to use the restroom.” Kurt’s tail reluctantly leaves your waist as he excuses himself and walks away. You sit quietly, taking a sip of your water as you wait.

“Hey, are you okay?” An unknown voice asks, when you turn you see a young woman peeking back at you over the booth. “Yes, why?” You ask in confusion, shifting to look at her more comfortably. “He’s not here, don’t be scared to ask for help,” the woman insists, sitting up further. “What? I don’t understand why I would need help.” “Is that mutie holding you against your will? It looks like a demon.” You stare at her, dumbfounded. “That mutant is my husband, I am perfectly fine, thank you.” You shift to face forward in your seat again, the woman sits up again to say more until Kurt returns and she is quick to quiet down, settling back into her booth. Kurt slides into the seat beside you, noticing your annoyed expression. “Did something happen?” He asks, worried. “No, Don’t worry about it.” You say quietly, trying to regulate yourself again as the waiter approaches with your food. Kurt thanks him as he leaves.

“Pray?” Kurt asks, holding his hand palm up for you to take if you agree. Whether you believe in God or not, you always wanted to see Kurt happy. His faith was always important to him, so it’s important to you too. You take his hand, bow your head, and close your eyes. Kurt’s tail flicks between you to wrap around your joins hands and arms, locking you together as Kurt closes his eyes as well. He begins to whisper his prayer, “Dear Lord thank you for the food we receive today, thank you for giving us the privilege to live comfortably. Please remember to give the less fortunate this chance too. We thank the hands that made these dishes and are grateful everyday.” He peeps his eye open to glance over at you, “Anything else?” He asks. You take a second to think before opening your mouth, “Thank you for bringing us together, and please continue your mighty work of helping people understand the good in mutants.” You glance over at him slightly, he smiles. “In Jesus name we pray, amen.” “Amen,” you speak at the same time and Kurt gently releases your hand. “I liked that, what made you think of that today?”

Before you can attempt to respond the lady behind you turns around again, “Did you guys just pray?” She asks, Kurt looks back at her in confusion. “Ja…?” She scoffs, “But God doesn’t like muties.” Kurt laughs, “Have you ever touched a bible? God created mutants!” The lady shifts to look at him intensely over the back of the booth. “Oh really? Then why does everyone hate them?” Kurt smiles, “Being different is one of God’s greatest challenges. It’s all apart of His divine plan. He created mutants to test the good of humanity, and clearly His test worked because now He knows that you are anti-mutant.” The lady gasps, “Do you even believe in God, or are you just trying to get into Heaven?” Kurt smiles, “I’m catholic, Fräulein. It’s strange that I’ve never seen you at church. Maybe we can chat more about this when I see you next Sunday! For now, I would like to eat dinner with my spouse undisturbed. Thank you for your concern, may God bless you!”

Kurt turns to face forward again, picking up his fork. “Well then, shall we?” He glances over at you, before he can say anything else your lips are suddenly on his, kissing him adoringly. “Mein Gott-” Kurt kisses you back eagerly before finally managing to stop you for a moment. “What’s gotten into you?” He asks, panting. “That was so hot.” You say, staring up at him with hearts in your eyes. “Liebe, the word of God is not hot, but you could say my attitude was.” He smirks, swiping his thumb across your cheek and he kisses you again before gently patting your chest before you could get too carried away. “Alright, alright, let’s eat our food before you get too carried away. One activity at a time, ja?” You pout, but shift to face forward again, face still flushed from the intense moment. “Fine…” As you begin to eat together you feel his tail wrap possessively around your waist once more. “Ich liebe dich,” Kurt says tenderly, scooting a little closer. “Ich liebe dich auch.” You whisper, the only German you actually understand other than his pet names, the only German that sticks in your brain.

“I love you too.”
