Jerry sighed in disappointment as he scrolled down his phone, trying his very best to ignore the feeling of shame and hurt trying to curl around his heart. Usually, things like this didn't get to him...but ever since the release of Coyote vs ACME, his relationship with Tom had been a bit more....scrutinized, as of late.
The latest tweet, with over 7k likes and 500 reblogs and counting, read, "Now that we're all in agreement that Road Runner's the best, can we all say we hated that mouse fucker?"
"Wow, people really aren't holding back, huh?"
Hearing those words, Jerry turned over to his companion perched on the armrest of the couch, one Tweety Bird, who was looking at his own phone. Similar to him, Tweety and Sylvester's relationship had also been looked at more closely...and not a lot of the chatter surrounding it was good.
"You know how it is Tweety," Jerry replied, putting his phone down and walking to the edge of the couch where Tweety was, sitting down right near the armrest. "People talk. They make noise. And gets lots of engagement before it dies down."
"I know..." Tweety responded, looking off to the side. "But it doesn't make it any less hard to hear." Tweety brought his knees up to his chest, gently setting his own phone to his side. "Especially when they claim you and me deserve to be eaten and whatnot."
Jerry couldn't argue there. Despite all his attempts to ignore it and laugh it off, the recent talk was starting to get to him too. He didn't really care about all the drama,...but Tweety wasn't wrong in that it was getting to be tiring. The death threats were especially not pleasant.
Before Jerry could respond back though, the door opened and in stepped two very familiar cats. One grey and blue. One black and white.
Tom Cat and Sylvester Pussycat. Jerry and Tweety's respective partners. And just MAYBE the loves of their lives...like Jerry would admit it to Tom though. He wasn't sure how strong Tweety's emotional resilience was in comparison.
"What's all the fuss about?" Tom asked, putting the bags of food he had brought in down on the nearby coffee table. Seeing the phones near the both of them though, they were quick to piece together the situation.
"Oh god, are you looking at the hellhole that calls itself a website again?" Sylvester asked in worried irritation, walking up to the canary and gently taking the phone from where Tweety had placed it. "Sunshine, I told you to stay off that. You know most of the people there are idiots."
"I know that..." Tweety murmured, his blue eyes turning upwards to face Sylvester. "It still....hurts a little though..."
Jerry scooted over a bit to let Tom sit next to him, quickly scooting back towards the cat after he made a place for himself on the couch cushions. And if he ended a little too close to Tom....well, that was his business. "Trust me, I know they don't mean anything." the mouse said to Sylvester. "But it's just....annoying to see constantly. It really isn't fun having your own character attacked and compared to someone else."
Tom waved a dismissive hand. "Ahhh, they don't know what they're talking about Jerry." Much to the mouse's surprise, he wrapped an arm around Jerry's shoulders, gently rubbing them with his paw. "What we do together is our business. And if they can't understand that you're just as important, well...." Tom smirked. "Then that's their problem."
In the arms and assurances of their partners, Tweety and Jerry allowed themselves to relax. Jerry snuggled closer to Tom, burrowing into the fur of Tom's side. Tweety gave a gentle peck to Sylvester's nose before moving to his lips, the tuxedo cat slowly sinking into it with a warm smile on his face.
Maybe people would continue to not understand them. Maybe their characters would continue to be attacked in misguided attempts at "justice." But with their partners by their sides, then they truly could face anything.
