Work Text:
Whenever anyone looked at the relationship between Toru and Mashirao, they would assume, rather correctly, that Mashirao was the more serious one. He was outwardly diligent, intensely hard-working, and practiced remarkable self-restraint. Toru was, well… Toru was a teenage girl and she acted her age! No one should fault her for enjoying her off time, nor for loving going to the mall, nor for sometimes procrastinating boring stuff to go have fun. But just because she wasn’t normally serious didn’t mean she couldn’t be serious.
And Toru was very, very serious about making sure her boyfriend felt cared for.
In fact, she was potentially more serious about this than her schooling, which was also probably why Mashirao was so tired right now. He was always happy to devote himself to helping her catch up on homework or study before tests, even though he would happily and frequently admit that he probably wasn’t the best person for the job. Still, he did it anyway, every test, just for her. If Toru thought about it too hard, she might cry. Instead, she devoted her energy towards the most purposeful shopping trip of her life, strutting through the mall like she owned it.
She picked out the softest blankets. She raided the stores for Icy-Hot and KT tape. She rented out the trashiest movies that she loved dearly, picked out an entire snack platter, and looked entirely too proud on her train ride back to the dorms as she pulled her cart of goodies behind her.
Toru was so serious about making sure her boyfriend felt cared for that she ignored the girl's night that was planned that day as she walked back into the dorms. She didn’t let Mashirao anywhere near her room—not even her door!—and busied herself with setting up, carefully counting down the minutes until she knew he’d end up knocking on her door. He could never resist offering to help her out. But tonight, she had no intention of accepting any sort of help. This was his night, even if Mashirao would try and brush it off in his usual humble way.
True to form, when the clock hands showed that an hour had passed since she’d returned, a knock had come at her door. She rolled her eyes, putting the finishing touches on her set-up, before she finally went to open the door. Mashirao stood there (in casual clothes, which was good—she’d specifically requested as much!) smiling sweetly, pretending as if he didn’t know what she’d plotted for the night. Another reason why her boyfriend was the best: he always played along with her schemes.
He allowed himself to be ushered in, settled into the pile of pillows and blankets she’d constructed (painstakingly, for the record), and acted properly shocked when she presented him with the fine selection of films she’d picked out for the night. He smiled gratefully when she presented him a basket of all the pain-relief, electrolyte powders, athletic tape, and otherwise that she’d spent so long shopping for that day, and when the snacks came out… Toru had never seen him look so delighted.
And after that—after all of that—Mashirao had the audacity to look at her and ask, “what did I do to deserve all your hard work tonight?”
Toru loved her boyfriend very very much. But sometimes, she sort of wanted to smack him with a pillow for his stupidity.
