Work Text:

The November air was cool and crisp. It was Inarizaki’s last training camp before winter break, and it was with none other than Itachiyama. Everyone thought it’d be a disaster with Atsumu and Kiyoomi’s bickering, but they’d been oddly tame for the past few days. They interact like normal people, and rarely fight. It was getting to a point where even Shinsuke was concerned.

The pair in question were in Kiyoomi’s dorm room, cuddling on his bed. Atsumu was spooning Kiyoomi, who was watching a volleyball match on his phone. “Omi, we’re tellin’ ‘em this week, right?” The blond asked, hand stroking his lover’s hip. His lover didn’t move. “Yeah. You’re ready, right?” The spiker looked back at his lover, who seemed to be in thought. “Yeah, but I don’t know if they’ll take it seriously.”

What?

Wait, what?!

They’re dating.

Miya Atsumu and Sakusa Kiyoomi are dating.

What the fuck?

Let's rewind a little.

“Bye Sasaki, Osamu. Atsumu, let’s go,” Himari said quietly, tugging at the seven year old boy’s hand. “Okay mama. Bye ‘Samu, bye papa.” A boy identical to Atsumu stood in front of him. “Bye ‘Tsumu. Bye mama.”  A man came up behind Osamu, planting a kiss on Himari’s lips. “Bye honey. I’ll see you both in a few weeks.” Himari, the twins’ mother, was going on a business trip to Arizona. She could bring a plus one. Sasaki would have gone if not for the kids being left unattended. Osamu didn’t want to go. Atsumu was absolutely ecstatic to see Sedona for the first time. The trip was long. Exhausting, even. An hour from Hyogo to an airport in Osaka, an 18 hour flight to Phoenix, Arizona then another two hour ride to Sedona.

It’d been two days since they landed, and the absence of his twin was finally starting to hit Atsumu. He looked lost, lonely even. He was at a café with his mom, eating cake while Himari drank coffee and typed furiously on her work computer. The setter spotted a boy sitting at another table. He had curly black hair and two elegant moles above his eyebrow, and they seemed to be the same age. Himari seemed to notice her son staring, because she encouraged him to go talk to him. “U-um.. hello,” Atsumu greeted in English. Kiyoomi recognized the accent immediately. “Are you Japanese?” “Ah, thank god! Ma English ain’t the best.” The two became friends fast. They bonded over liking volleyball. It turns out Kiyoomi was in Sedona for a trip, and he’d be in Sedona for the exact same amount of time as Atsumu.

Their mothers stayed in touch for the two to talk until they turned twelve and got their first phones.

Then thirteen, when Atsumu blurted out “I love ya, Omi” on one of their video calls. Then fifteen, when Kiyoomi gave Atsumu a promise ring for their anniversary. Then sixteen, first year of high school, when the two had matching engagement rings and the blessings from their parents. Their parents assumed Osamu and Motoya knew, but nobody did, really.

Back to the present, both teams were in the Itachiyama dorm lounge. Atsumu had his guitar. He’d brought it to the camp, much to his teammates’ disapproval. After all, why would a volleyball player need a guitar during a training camp for volleyball?

“Ne, can I play a song?” the setter asked, “I’ve been workin’ on it recently and I just finished it.”

Osamu and Rintarou groaned, while Michinari, Aran and Shinsuke looked intrigued. “I’m sure we’d all love to listen to it, Atsumu-san,” Motoya replied respectfully. Tsukasa nodded politely, making a bashful smile tug at the blond’s face. “Okay, wait.” His fingers went to the top of the guitar case, zipping it open to reveal a gorgeous acoustic guitar. It was a deep brown with small volleyball, quote and flag stickers. “Oh, Tsumu, I didn't know you were bisexual,” Hitoshi observed. The setter smiled. “Yeah.” Kiyoomi’s eyes widened in recognition. He’d bought those stickers for his lover years ago, but he didn’t think they were on his guitar. Not something as precious as his guitar.

The setter played a few notes, before wincing and tuning the guitar. He continued to adjust the instrument as his audience whispered among themselves in curiosity or excitement. The blond finally played a chord and hummed in approval. He clipped his black capo onto the side of the guitar, before putting his fingers into a starting position to play.

He played a few muted notes before starting. “Baby, easy, I lose myself completely when you’re trapped in my mind,” the blond sang, completely shocking his teammates with his voice. It was one of those quiet, absurd talents that he rarely flexed. “I can take you anywhere. You love me, sorry. I’m tryin’ to look pretty.” Ren’s eyebrows shot up as he realized it was a love song. Miya Atsumu, starting setter of the Inarizaki High boys volleyball team, writing and singing a love song? Unbelievable. “I’m homely inside. Ye don’t seem to care. Lovin’ isn’t easy when the thrill is gone.” His fingers paused on the guitar, letting the strings shake before starting to strum the instrument again. “I found my nicotine. Amphetamine. The only thing that’s good to me, my nicotine, amphetamine, I look at you and I can’t breathe.” Kiyoomi was absolutely enchanted by his lover’s voice. He’d heard his boyfriend sing many times before, but it was the first time he’d listened to a song made for him. He knew how the song went, all the lyrics and chords, but he couldn’t help but fall in love with Atsumu all over again. “Sedona, Arizona,” the blond held the note, “don’t ya wanna be nobody every once in a while? Sedona, I’m looking for ya. Nothing even matters just as long as you’re mine.” Michinari sat up, absolutely in love with how the song was sounding. “Try to convince ye, I’ve got nothin’ ta prove and nothin’ ta hide. I’ll take you everywhere.” Atsumu smiled fondly, looking up at his audience who were all intrigued and listening intently. “I’ll spend less time pretendin’ that I am kind. Yer along for the ride, not easy to scare. Suddenly it’s easier with the lights on.” The blond began to play the chorus on his guitar once again, completely immersing himself into the song. Suddenly, someone joined in for the backing vocals. It was none other than Kiyoomi. Everyone’s jaws dropped, except for Atsumu. He simply smiled at his boyfriend, continuing to sing. “I found my nicotine. Amphetamines, the only thing that’s good to me. My nicotine, amphetamine, I look at you and I can’t breathe,” the spiker sang in a slightly higher pitch, “Sedona, Arizona. Don’t you wanna be nobody every once in a while? Sedona. I’m looking for ya. Nothing even matters just as long as you’re mine.” Motoya stared at his cousin like he was an alien. Just a month before, Kiyoomi had told him he hated singing and would never sing for other people. “So what, I want no sympathy. I’ve got knots inside of me, so tell me when I can believe, give me peace and sanity. I swear I want no sympathy at all,” the blond sang solo. He played a few last notes, humming softly. Osamu stared at his brother in shock. He never knew his brother could actually play the guitar. He’d assumed it was just for show. All the volleyball players could do was clap, because their ace and their setter’s talents were something they’d never known existed. “Good job, Omi! I didn’t think ya’d get it, since I never showed ya how it sounded when I actually sang the song,” the blond praised his lover, scratching his neck sheepishly. The curly-haired man looked at him with a raised eyebrow. “Doubting me now, huh, Tsu?” “Hey! Ya know it ain’t like that!”

The pair fell into another bickering fit, completely ignoring the stares of his teammates. Shinsuke cleared his throat, making the pair hyperaware of the dozen eyes staring at them. “Tsumu, Sakusa-san, y’all were amazing. That was a wonderful song,” the white-haired boy praised them. Aran smiled, nudging Atsumu’s shoulder. “Ye should play fer us more!” The setter smiled sheepishly, scratching the back of his neck. “Thanks, Aran-kun.” Tsukasa sat up, deciding to join in. “You did great as well, Sakusa-san. You should definitely sing for us again sometime.” “Thank you Iizuna-san.”

“Tsumu, who was that song about?” Rintarou asked. “You said you wrote it, right? Who was it about?” Atsumu lit up. His hand reached into his shirt, pulling out a thin chain necklace. It had a rose gold ring attached to it, the initials “M.A + S.K” engraved into it with a small heart. “I proposed to Atsumu last year. Our parents gave their blessings. We’ve been dating since we were thirteen, met in Sedona, Arizona at seven,” Kiyoomi explained. The players’ jaws hit the floor. “Tsumu.. I’m gonna fuckin’ kill ya,” Osamu choked out, standing up ready to absolutely obliterate his twin. “Why didn’t ya tell me?! I’m yer twin brother for fucks sake!” Motoya was just about to do the same thing to his cousin before Tsukasa interrupted. He along with, Ren, Shinsuke and Aran gave them their congratulations despite the shock, while Hitoshi and Michinari begged to see the ring again.
