Summary:

Three thinks to herself what life would be if things were okay between her and One.

Work Text:

The moon light was shining onto Three’s dark red curly hair, it gave it a color similar to her hair before she died. Knowing this, she quickly backed away from the window which had the light falling down from. While moving away from the light, she bumped into a large container filled with water– and a body. Well, part of a body. One was no more, her only known existence being her terror that she reigned onto others for someone long gone or perhaps herself, and the remains of her which floated lifelessly in the dark water.

Three was splashed with water that spilled from the clear container, scaring her in the process. She gasped and jumped up even though it was a small speck of water that fell onto her, she wasn’t worried for herself or her clothing, she was worried for what was inside of the container. Three didn’t know why she was so determined on recovering One, after all, it was One who hurt her, right? So, why? Why did she get this ache when she thought of her while in that cage? Why did she not have any words for her when she was alive, but now could write millions of paragraphs to her now that her body is in front of her? Why is it when she is so close to understanding One, she’s all the way back at the start? Why is it that One gave Three a feeling that nobody else has ever given her?

Why?

Three didn’t understand it at all either, she’s as confused as she is focused on One. She quickly checked the container on all sides, looking for any cracks or problems. Nothing. She sighed in relief, what was left of her heart began to slow down. She sat down at her usual spot next to the water, resting her back on a pillow she set up next to it and closed her eyes. Three was a very avid day dreamer, she would be in her corner next to One and begin to go to other worlds.

Sometimes she was a mighty knight set out to save a princess in distress, other times a princess waiting for someone to be her mighty knight, a witch who was cast out by everyone she loved once they found out, sometimes she wasn’t even a person in her day dreams, she was just an observer of a happy story playing out exactly how she wanted. Three was content with her day dreams as long as everyone played their parts how she wanted, it was her head after all, so she gets to control it.

But there was always something off about all of her day dreams, someone lurking in the shadows, disappearing when noticed. You could see the silhouette of them, but not their face. Three had always spotted them, no matter where or what she was, this person was always there in Three's sight just out of reach.

She had brushed it off the first 10 or so times of her day dreams, but after a while without realizing it Three began to actively look out for this person in every dream. It was a game to her, how long it would take for her to spot them, how fast they’d be able to get away, and if she could actually make out their face. She remembers all of her day dreams very vividly, they are like memories to her except she knows they aren’t real. She can remember exactly what happens from start to finish in them, but she can never remember what the person looked like. It frustrated Three that even something in her own mind would disobey her and step out of line, but at the same time intrigued her.

This time, though, Three wanted to think about what life would be like if she and One got to be happy. Three hadn’t tried this idea before, so she wanted to do something new. Even if the idea of everything being the same comforted Three, she wanted something different, something new. She had liked spontaneous things from time to time, which might’ve been what drew her to One in the first place.

Way back in the Equation playground, Three had started to watch One. Not out of malicious intent or to keep her check, but to observe her– Three was fascinated by something she knew nothing about. It let her come up with her own personality for One without even knowing what she sounded like, Three would find herself day dreaming about One even before she was killed.

Three smacked her face softly and then began to think.

A few minutes later;

Three closed her eyes…

Touching her feet was the swaying grass, with flowers blooming all around. The grass looked like an ocean of green, it was comforting to say the least. She twirled around a bit and walked through the soft blades of grass, they tickled her a bit when she walked but it wasn’t unbearable, just enough to get a little giggle out of her.

When Three had opened her eyes, she spotted a woman in a white dress with long blue hair standing still as she seemingly stared into the clear blue sky. Three couldn’t tell who this was, was it One, or somebody else? Three brushed her dress off and picked herself up off of the grass, not taking her eyes off of this woman just in case she disappears.

The woman began to turn around,

“T*#HR890EE”

Garbled nonsense that sounded like a fork in a trash dispenser was yelled into Three’s ears. She quickly covered them, someone stood tall and eerie looking at Three.

Her face wasn’t there.

Three knew who this was, but she didn’t know what to think. She forgot One’s face.

“A*#(@))AaeKRE Y*#U312 OK9182A Y.,,;;;?”

The noise was louder, it was hurting Three’s ears so bad. Three felt like she was going to throw up, but she couldn’t stop staring at what was making this sound, this horrible awful sound that was coming from a face she couldn't recognize.

One stood there with her face blacked out, her hair swaying in the wind. The flowers around her and Three were simply moving to the rhythm of the wind, not stopping for a second. Three felt her lungs give out, she fell to her knees just seeing One, even without her face the guilt was still there.

One didn’t do anything, she simply watched Three collapse down, her hair moving gracefully with the current of the wind. The woman turned around and walked away, her body began to fade from head to toe.

Three reached her hand out for her in hopes of getting her attention, only to wake up with tears covering her face and a hand touching no one.

Three felt her heart drop.

Three had forgotten everything about ■■■.
