Work Text:
The scent of burnt sugar and old rosin always precedes the music. Manuel steps through the heavy oak doors of the Ivanovka estate, the Russian winter clawing at his coat, but the interior is a furnace of heat and humidity. He freezes. From the drawing room, the sharp, rhythmic pluck of a guitar—impossible, for he has not yet played his new cycle for anyone—slices through the air. It is the *Siete canciones populares españolas*.
He moves toward the sound, his boots clicking on the polished parquet. He finds them in a whirlwind of fabric and laughter. Sergei is there, the towering Russian moving with a surprising, fluid grace, his large hands guiding the girls through the living room.
Irina, ten years old and poised with a frighteningly precise elegance, drifts like a ghost. "Papa!" she cries, her voice a fragile reed. "I am the *Asturiana*, melancholic and slow, I sway!" She leans back, her spine a supple arc, mirroring the mourning quality of the music.
Beside her, six-year-old Tatiana is a blur of chaotic energy, leaping with a wild, unbridled joy that threatens to knock over a Ming vase. "And I am the *Jota*!" she shrieks, spinning until she is dizzy. "Celebrate before sleep comes with the lullaby!"
Manuel stares at the gramophone—or rather, the lack of one. He sees the handwritten score on the piano, the ink still tacky. Sergei has transcribed the cycle from Manuel’s private letters, reconstructing the rhythms by instinct and memory.
The music shifts. The *Canción* begins—playful, flirtatious, a rhythmic tease that pulses in the throat. Sergei’s eyes lock onto Manuel’s. The air between them thickens, heavy with the musk of sweat and the salt of skin. Sergei reaches out, his long fingers hooking around Manuel’s wrist, pulling him violently into the dance. The friction of their wool coats creates a static charge, a raw heat that radiates from their chests. Manuel feels the thrum of the music in his marrow, the Spanish heat colliding with the Russian winter, leaving them breathless and burning in the center of the room.
