Work Text:

David knocked on the door of the Emerson household.

Michael had yet to return to the iron works after he said he would the previous night. After sitting around for a while David had the bright idea to come visit him himself.

There was a crash from inside, then a yelp of pain. David peered through the window, looking into the kitchen. Michael was doubled over on the floor, clutching his midsection next to a pile of spilled noodles. How had David forgotten, the consequences of becoming a vampire? Should have gotten here sooner. He thought to himself angrily.

He knocked once again, harder this time. "Michael! Let me in!"

Michael groaned, he looked like he was trying to fight something, or someone. David knocked for a third time, hoping to cut through Michael's thoughts. "Michael I can't help if you don't let me in!"

He watched as Michael dragged himself to his feet, stumbling to the door. Upon opening the door and seeing David, Michael collapsed into him, grabbing onto his jacket.

"What's going on? What did you do?"

"Nothing you didn't sign up for, Michael." David looked down at Michael, meeting his eyes. He tucked a curl behind his ear. Michael whimpered, leaning into his touch.

"I don't understand, why is hallucinating part of the transformation?"

"No clue. Now, let me inside Michael."

Michael tilted his head to the side. "What do you mean you don't know?"

"I just don't. Invite me in." David asked again.

"Fine. Come in."

David smiled at Michael, walking through the door, pulling him along. "Nice house, Michael." He looked around. "Got some... nice... decorations." David eyed the deer warily.

Michael nodded, letting go of David and walking to grab the dustpan. He picked the noodles, letting out a disappointed sigh. "So much for dinner." He laughed humorlessly.

David flopped onto the couch, Michael joined him soon after. David's hand found it's way into Michael's hair, scratching at his scalp. "So... Michael, how are you feeling?"

"Terrible, my whole body hurts." Michael put his head on David's shoulder. "And my teeth. Also I got burned by the faucet, wasn't even hit water. What's up with that?"

David hummed. "No running water."

"What?"

"Vampire logic. I don't make the rules."

"Ookay... I have another question."

"Yes?"

"How do I make it stop?"

"Kill someone."

"I don't want to kill an unsuspecting person." Michael said.

David shook his head. "Michael, we don't kill innocent people."

Michael protested. "But Star said-"

"Star doesn't care to learn the truth." David snapped. "She sees us as the bad guys."

Michael flicked him gently. "Don't snap at me, I didn't do anything. And you technically still are criminals, even if you only kill bad people."

"Whatever. You still have to kill someone to become a full vampire."

"Yeah, I know." Michael hummed. "Can't leave the house though. I have to watch Sam until my mom gets home."

"If you are uncomfortable, tell me."

"I am most definitely uncomfortable." Michael said, letting out a small laugh.

"Here." David bit into his arm, offering it to Michael.

"What?"

"Drink."

Michael eyed David's forearm warily, his teeth ached. He gave in, biting down on David's arm. Michael sighed, instantly feeling better. David pulled his arm away, wiping away the blood on Michael's face. "How are you feeling Michael?"

"Better." Michael smiled up at him.

David chuckled. "Good, good." He put his arm around Michael, hand rubbing his shoulder. Michael pulled himself closer to David, yawning. "My mom's gonna be back soon... She'll mad I'm inviting random people to our home. You should go. Tell the other guys I can't make it tonight."

"What if they came here?"

"David no, that's even worse. I'll get in worse trouble."

"Fine, fine. Wouldn't want you do get in more trouble now would we?"

Michael laughed, fully relaxing into David, he drifted off soon after that.

It was a while before Lucy returned from her night with Max. She dropped her bag on the kitchen table, calling out to Sam and Michael. "Boys! I'm home!"

Sam came down the stairs, holding one of his comic books, he took a look into the living room on his way to the kitchen. He saw Michael and David on the couch, Michael asleep on his shoulder. "Mom, Mike's inviting his weird friends in the house!"

Lucy looked up from where she was standing, placing her hands on her hips. She walked into the living room, taking one look at David and Michael. David smiled, raising his hand and waving. Lucy sighed, putting her hand on her forehead. "Michael Emerson."

David nudged Michael, squeezing his shoulder. "C'mon get up bright eyes."

Michael stirred, blinking his eyes open. He looked up from David's shoulder, his eyes met Lucy's. "Hey Mom." He said, sitting upright. "How was your night?"

"Michael, you didn't tell me you were inviting people over." She smiled at David. "And who are you?"

"David, pleasure to meet you Ms. Emerson. I've heard so much from Michael."

"Stop trying to charm my mom." Micheal pushed David's shoulder.

Lucy laughed, she headed back into the kitchen. "Just tell me when you plan on inviting people over. I'm glad you have friends."

Michael stood up, stretching. He looked down at David, who remained sitting. "I'm going upstairs. You're welcome to join me... or go home." He shrugged, heading towards the stairs. David got up, following close behind.

"Night mom." Michael said. David smiled at Lucy before he followed Michael.

--------

Michael opened the door to his room, holding it for David. He went to his closet and grabbed more comfortable clothes, throwing his jacket onto his bed.

"Come back to the ironworks with me." David said from the doorway.

Michael pulled on a clean shirt. "Told you I can't. It's too late and my mom would be mad if I left right now."

David walked closer. "She doesn't have to know."

"What happened to being all polite, hmm?" Michael turned towards him, tilting his head, teasing.

"Doesn't matter." He grabbed Michael's hips, pulling him closer. Michael laughed, he put his hands around David's shoulders, smiling. "You just want me to be like you." He teased.

"So? You have an issue?" David questioned defensively.

"Never said that, slow your roll. I'm just teasing."

"Apologies." David said, giving Michael a tight smile.

"You don't have to be a jerk all the time."

"I'm not."

"Fine, I'll let it go." Michael stepped away from David, laying down on his bed. David stood there, staring at him. Michael smiled, beckoning David closer. "Don't just stand there, come here." David came and sat on his bed next to Michael. He reached out and tucked a stray curl behind Michael's ear. Michael hummed contentedly. "You do that a lot."

"Do what?"

 "Mess with my hair. Why?"

"It's pretty. And soft."

"Well I take care of my hair, if you stopped bleaching yours to oblivion it would be like this too." David thought about it for a second, he shrugged.

"Had curls like yours." He said finally.

"You did?" Michael sat up, looking at him intently. "When?"

"Back before I was this." He gestured to himself. "Before vampirism in World War I."

"You fought?"

David cringed, he had shared too much. He hesitated before speaking again. "Yes. Hated every moment of it. Now stop asking me things."

Michael grabbed him, pulling him closer. "You need to relax, stop being so uptight. I won't judge you." David laid his head on Michael's shoulder, mirroring the position they were in earlier. They sat in comfortable silence for a while. Michael spoke up finally. "Sun's up soon. Don't you have to go back?"

"Mmm... yeah. But I have time."

Michael played with the ends of David's hair. "Sure you do." He laid back, David went with him. They stayed in each other's arms for some time, talking. Eventually Michael drifted off, David soon after, though David did wake up before the sun rose.

He left Michael sleeping peacefully, disappearing through the window.
