A Birthday To Remember

Summary:

Months after Willa disappears into the future, Enid has her 19th birthday.

Wednesday knows just the perfect gift

Work Text:

The morning of Enid’s 19th birthday Wednesday slips out of bed before the werewolf awakes. It takes several minutes to detangle herself from her girlfriend but eventually she is in the kitchen with Thing, throwing everything together in a mixing bowl.

Once Enid’s birthday breakfast has been prepared, Wednesday decides it’s time to wake the sleeping wolf. It may be a Saturday but she had many plans in store for the day which required Enid to be awake and alert.

When Wednesday steps inside the dark bedroom, she finds Enid still curled up like she was around her an hour ago. The black out curtains leave only a sliver of sunlight peaking into the room, not having been fully closed the night before, and highlighting Enid’s features in the morning light. Wednesday takes a moment to just stare, admiring this magnificent woman, before flicking on the bedroom lights.

Enid immediately groans in response, grabbing and burying her head into a pillow. “Wends-“ She whines. “It’s Saturday.”

“It’s also your birthday, querida,” Wednesday replies, moving over to the bedside and gently prying the pillow away from her. “And there’s much in store for you today.”

Enid grabs her girlfriend’s wrist as she goes to turn around. “Is one of those things cuddling?” She looks at her with puppy dog eyes that Wednesday swears are some powerful werewolf attribute because she can only cave to Enid’s desires.

“Five minutes,” The goth relents, laying down next to her girlfriend, who immediately curls up at her side, fingers digging into the fabric of her shirt. “And you will not fall back asleep.”

“Wouldn’t dream of it,” Enid responds, muffled against Wednesday’s chest. Enid is content for about three minutes before she looks up at Wednesday.

“What is it?”

“Your heart is beating fast,” Enid grins. “I can hear it.”

“My pulse is always abnormally low,” Wednesday replies, trying to ignore the heat warming up her cheeks.

“Mhmm,” Enid nods with a giggle. “Sure.”

“If it brings you joy to see me experiencing tachycardia, then kissing may also be an appropriate stimulus,” Enid’s breath hitches at Wednesday’s words. For someone so deadpan and seemingly unfazed by most things in life, Wednesday is shockingly good at flirting. And it always catches Enid off guard.

But the werewolf takes only a second to recover before grinning again. “Well come here then.”

Their lips touch with the same love and care as the first time. The kiss is soft and sensual at first, Enid sitting further up to deepen it and Wednesday placing an arm around her waist. But it quickly picks up speed. Wednesday nips at Enid’s bottom lip who lets out a satisfied sigh in response, and when given a reprieve, Enid drags her fangs along her girlfriend’s kiss swollen lips, just as she knows she likes.

When they finally pull away, only because Enid’s stomach growls and Wednesday knows her food is probably getting cold, she offers Enid one of her rare, soft smiles. “Happy birthday, mi sol. It is an honor to have another year with you on this dreadful mortal plane.”

Enid can only grin in response.

After Enid finishes her birthday waffles, topped with whipped cream, strawberries, and rainbow sprinkles, Wednesday brings her to their first stop.

“Omg wait,” Enid exclaims, pausing the swinging of their joined hands when she sees the first surprise. “Are we really going on one of the swan boats?”

“You have talked about it since we moved here, have you not?” Wednesday replies. Enid nods eagerly and practically sprints towards the waiting boat. Wednesday joins her a minute later, and they pedal around the lake together.

“Now I know why you told me to wear pants,” Enid laughs. “This would’ve been way more difficult in a skirt.”

“Indeed, Mon Cheri,” Wednesday agrees.

After they get off the boat, there is a horse drawn carriage awaiting them to take them to their next destination. “I sprung for an actual enclosed carriage,” Wednesday tells her, helping her inside. “The smell of horse feces is not pleasant.”

Enid makes a face as Wednesday climbs in. “No, definitely not,” she agrees. “Besides this gives us so much more privacy.”

Wednesday raises an eyebrow, her pupils darkening. “And what would you like to do with that privacy, Enid?”

Something about Wednesday saying her name after all these terms of endearment sends a shiver down Enid’s spine. The intensity of the question was not lost on her. She climbs over from her spot on the velvet cushions to place herself in Wednesday’s lap, arms around her neck. “You figure it out, detective.”

Wednesday’s hands keep a steady grip on Enid’s waist, as she pulls her into a languishing kiss.

Their destination ends up being Enid’s favorite steak house.  Enid’s friends, or really their friends as Enid insists, await them outside.

“Happy birthday, Enid,” Yoko exclaims, pulling her friend into a tight hug. When they pull away, Yoko smirks. “Looks like somebody smeared your lipstick.”

Enid swats her arm playfully, “as if you and Divinia are any better.”

“I’ve come close to turning her on more than one occasion,” the vampire admits. “But I have the self control not to suck any blood except what comes from the cafeteria options.”

“So do I,” Enid argues. “You know I haven’t given Wednesday a mating bite yet.”

“I do,” Yoko concedes. “And I think she’s a little disappointed by that fact.” The two observe Wednesday as she talks to Bianca, the siren and the seer making obvious jabs at each other. Before the friendly banter can become cruel, Enid saddles up to Wednesday’s side to announce that she’s hungry. And so, the friend group goes inside, and enjoys a nice birthday lunch on Wednesday’s dime, who pays the bill before anyone else can get their wallet out.

After that, they meet up with Lurch who takes everyone back to the house Enid and Wednesday share, in the Addams family hearse. Wednesday makes a beeline for the kitchen, bringing out a vanilla cake with a tie dye looking rainbow frosting and sprinkles that look like little pearls. In the front, in the Raven’s black cursive handwriting she has written “Happy birthday, Enid.”

“Wends-“ Enid chokes up. “You made this for me?”

“Only the best for you, Cara Mia,” Wednesday replies. “I hope it meets your expectations.”

“But what about you? What about your color allergy?”

“I’ve taken my medicine today,” Wednesday replies. “I can endure for one night.” Enid doesn’t know what to say so she swings her arms around Wednesday’s neck and kisses her silly. By the time everyone is through singing happy birthday, Enid is nearly sobbing with happy tears, and thanks Wednesday a million times.

After that, it’s time for gifts which everyone gave Wednesday to hide up until this moment. Enid gets one from everyone, including Thing, and is grinning so hard her cheeks hurt by the time their friends decide they should go.

As their friends file out the front door, Enid receives a call on the crystal ball from Gomez, Morticia, Grandmama, and Pubert, wishing her a happy birthday, and promising her gifts will arrive in the mail the following day.

After they hang up, Enid skips to the kitchen where Wednesday is cleaning up, and wraps her arms around the goth’s waist. “Thank you, Wednesday,” she says again, nuzzling her head into her girlfriend’s shoulder. “This has been the best birthday ever.”

“I am glad,” Wednesday replies, turning around from the sink full of dishes to face Enid directly. “I do, however, have one more gift for you.”

“Another gift? Wends you’ve already done so much today, you really don’t have to..” Enid trails after Wednesday as she breaks the hug and goes towards the living room. Wednesday pulls a rectangular gift out from the little gap behind the fireplace and hands it to Enid. The wrapping paper is black but with various moon phases strewn about. Very them, as Enid would say.

“Go on,” Wednesday tells her. “I have already bought the gift, you might as well open it.”

Enid nods, tearing the wrapping paper delicately with her fingers. She slowly uncovers a frame, and inside the frame is a painting. She has to fight back another sob when she sees what the painting is of.

“Apologies for the long wait, I would have had it by Christmas but the first artist I commissioned didn’t think he could do the image justice.”

Enid just stares. Stunned into silence. The painting is of a moment she remembers vividly. The night Wednesday and her first confessed their feelings to each other and the night that Willa’s spirit disappeared. They are in Pubert’s room, made obvious by the toys and the four year old asleep in the bed. And on either side of him is Wednesday and Enid, still in their dresses from the night, and Pubert’s bedtime story closed in Enid’s lap. All three of them are sleeping, and then Enid notices the fourth presence there. Tucked in between Pubert and Wednesday and reaching an arm out to Enid in her sleep is a girl with dark messy hair, and werewolf pajamas.

“Is that…” Enid trails off when Wednesday nods.

“It took a few tries before the artist got her exact features down from my description,” Wednesday tells her. “But I think this final draft is accurate. You wished to know what Willa looked like as my spirit guide, did you not?”

Enid can only nod, her face flooding with tears as she sets down the painting and wraps herself in Wednesday’s arms, burying her face in her girlfriend’s neck.

“Happy birthday, Enid,” Wednesday murmurs, kissing the werewolf’s shoulder gently. “I hope my actions today were a proficient expression of love.”

Enid nods into Wednesday’s neck, tears still flowing. “More than proficient,” she says hoarsely. “I love you too.”

That painting stays with them throughout their lives, even after Willa is all grown up and off on her own. Neither of them ever wishes to part with it.

And if on the night of Enid’s 19th birthday, Wednesday agrees to a mating bite as part of her thank you, well Enid would say seeing the mark on her mate’s neck is one of her favorite gifts too.
