Bugs Bunny was scuttling frantically around his apartment attempting to prepare himself for he and Daffy’s date at the theater that was to occur later that evening. Minute by minute ticked by and Bugs was becoming more and more flustered as he noticed that Daffy was lingering about and lagging behind with his own grooming and procuring of adornments. He thought to say something about it, to explain to him candidly that he should hurry and not dawdle, but immediately decided against it as he found himself too preoccupied with getting them out the door on time.
Daffy, who was looking more and more anxious as they moved about from one part of the apartment to the next, finally stopped his mate in the middle of the living room with a light grasp of his lover’s attenuated arm,“.....Bugsth? Hey…wait a minute, dear….I-I need to askth you thsomething before we go out tonight…”
“What didya’ need ta’ talk about, sweetheart? Remember, we haveta’ be outta’ here in a few minutes ta’ catch our show.”
“It won’t take long. I need only to borrow….uhm, a ….a few thsecondsth of our time….,” Daffy said while chuckling nervously to himself. He rummaged around and fiddled precipitately with something in his pants pocket that Bugs, for the life of him, could not see and make out what it could be. He placed a hand on his hip and peered down at his lover with an inquisitive, yet still rumpled and ruffled, expression as he tried to remain patient with him.
“Ok, Daff, what’s on your mind? What didya’ need ta’ tell me that might make us….late…..Daffy, what…..whaddya’ doing? What’s....whaddya’ have in your…is that….?”
Bugs’ words wavered and withered into the growing, deafening silence of the room as he stood in befuddled disbelief. His expression quickly changed to that of astoundment and elation with his heart’s normal pace slowly increasing in rhythm as his eyes quickly darted between his little black duck and the little black box that he held in his feathered hands.
Daffy, while attempting to calmly as well as discreetly breathe in and out in an attempt to relax his restless and jittery nerves, knelt down and rested one knee into the light brown carpet of Bugs’ living room. He gazed into Bug’s star-stricken eyes with as much loving devotion and conviction as he could possibly muster as he moved his fingers over the lid and slowly pulled it back to reveal a rather simple, yet still splendant and shimmery, silver band.
The grey bunny’s breath became a shuddering mess as his heart began to race far more wildly. His affectivity was enkindled with powerful adoration and a dreamy and resplendent blissfulness upon seeing the ring, though he still felt as if this was not real, or that it could only be a fantasy induced by his still sleeping mind that somehow never woke up that morning; this could not actually be happening. Bugs looked at the mallard and saw that his fervent gaze was still locked on to him, snapping him out of his disbelieving entrenchment and back to the present, his eyes still wide with awe.
Daffy cleared his throat and swallowed stiffly, the feeling of a persistent lump being ever so uncomfortably present, as he steeled himself into asking the question that has been laboriously ladening his brain for years now and that would, once uttered, change the course of their lives forever.
”....Bugsth Bunny….you are, without questhion, the greatestth thing that hasth ever happened to me in my entire life. You are my love….. and my light and…..and you have been a blessthing on me for asth long asth we have known each other, thincthe we firsth met, and I …. wanted you to know that I love you and that…..I….I-I wanted to thspend the resth of my life with you and…..and make our relationthship more than what it isth now…..perhapsth, we could make it more permanent….by you….ehm, mm…. doing me the honor of…..marrying me?”
Bugs felt himself soaring to new and intemperate heights as he stood delightfully dumbstruck over Daffy’s proposition. Never once had he ever imagined in his wildest daydreams that he would be hearing these words in his entire life. He assumed that this monumental convention was meant for others, the more ‘acceptable’ people in their society, and that it would rapidly pass him by without a passing glance, scurrying beyond and out of his reach to forever seek someone else to allow it to be beheld.
But here he was, staring down the very face of his clandestine destiny as he felt tears of jubilance quickly begin to well forth. With one harsh blink and a soft whimper, they erupted from the corners of his eyes and came careening down his face; he did not hesitate his answer.
“......yes, Daffy. My answer is yes.….I…..I would love to more den’ anything…,” he responded committedly through a slightly quivering voice, all the while grinning warmly as he extended his arm forwards. Daffy, with a small of his own firmly planted to his bill, plucked the small ring from its box and placed the case back into his pocket. He reached forward slowly and clasped Bugs’ offered hand and cradled it in his own, soon followed by the delicate emplacement of the ring on the bunny’s slender finger thereafter.
An impassioned and wistfully lovesome desire quickly filled and dominated his senses as the overpowering urge to be held and caressed by his little black duck became more and more pronounced and perfervid. He stayed himself and allowed Daffy a few moments to stand more fully before acting on his enraptured instincts.
At the first sign of opportunity, he irrepressibly pounced upon his newly affianced mate, hurriedly sweeping the mallard into a tight, passionate embrace. Daffy hugged him just as intensely in return, imparting a warm, soothing hand to rub up and down Bugs’ back tenderly as he felt his beautiful bunny weep onto his shoulder.
”.......I love you Daffy. I love you…….with all my heart.….”
”....I love you too, Bugsth….forever and ever…… from now ‘till the end……,” Daffy replied as he nuzzled his cheek into Bugs’ neck. The two lightly swayed in the comfort and safety of the living room without a worry in the world, both blissfully and blithefully revelling in the wonder, splendor and joy of the possibilities that awaited them in their lives to come.
