Cody briskly walked through the hallways of the venator. The meeting had been longer than planned, and after that he had been caught up in a short chat with some vode and now he was late. Not that it was much of a problem, but Cody preferred to keep his word.
His steps slightly slowed when he spotted his appointment on the other end of the hallway. Good thing he knew his way around.
“Rex,” Cody greeted, coming to a stop in front of him.
“Cody,” Rex greeted back, clasping his hand tightly.
“How are you?” Cody leaned in, not letting go of Rex’s hand. It had been so long.
“Another streak of successful missions.” Rex gave him a tired smile that told Cody enough. He smiled back, then tugged at Rex’s hand before letting go. “Come on, I’m finished for the day. I think we both deserve some rest.”
Rex only nodded and followed him.
Once the door closed behind him and Cody made sure to lock it, Rex allowed himself to be hugged. While their relationship might not be a secret, they didn't need to make it any more public. The troopers talked enough, even if it wasn’t bad per se.
Rex sighed, and rested his head on Cody’s shoulder, growing heavy in his hold. Cody leaned his head against Rex’s and hugged him for a few seconds. Being away from each other for a long time was always hard.
But Cody didn’t want to stand here all evening, especially not while they were both still in armor. While this was nice, he wanted to feel Rex against him and so he nudged him until Rex pulled back. He had dropped his mask, and if he had looked tired before, now he looked positively exhausted. Still, he followed Cody’s request and started to strip his armor, while Cody did the same, neatly stacking it in a corner. He was done faster than Rex, waiting for the other to finish before pulling him to bed. And despite Rex being the one tired, the one back from a strand of missions and the one who undoubtedly needed the comfort more, he was the one to climb in first and then pull Cody on top of him, so he could rest against his chest and tuck his head under Rex’s chin.
It was Cody’s favorite position. He felt safe, wrapped up in Rex’s arms like this, and Rex loved having the weight on top of him. He said it was soothing, a deep pressure that helped him relax, and Cody didn’t doubt it. He could practically see the tension drain out of Rex, even in the dimmed light.
Cody sighed softly and let himself relax too. This was like it was supposed to be. The two of them, curled up together somewhere safe. And for a few hours, Cody could pretend the galaxy was alright.
He sighed again when Rex started to card a hand through his hair, scratching his scalp just right. Cody turned his head so he could press a kiss to Rex’s jaw, and then another one for good measure. He felt Rex’s smile more than he saw it, then Rex dragged his hand down to cup Cody’s cheek and tilt his head up a little.
The angle was a little awkward. That didn’t stop Rex from peppering soft kisses all over Cody’s face though. He always enjoyed this, showing Cody just how much he loved him while Cody craved the contact. Down to their blacks, he could feel the warmth radiating off Rex. It made Cody melt against Rex even more, and he knew Rex enjoyed it just as much. Picking up on the small signs of him being content was easy enough now.
The most prominent one was the soft, quiet purr that reverberated through Rex’s chest, one that Cody answered with a purr of his own.
Yes, Cody could stay like this forever. And if not forever, at least for these few hours that were their own.
