Work Text:
“Has your best friend always been this stupid?”
Jack snorts, but he doesn’t bother looking up from his paperwork as his wife walks into their apartment. “Yes, Lizzie. Your best friend has always been this stupid.” He grins, knowing Lizzie is sticking her tongue out at him. “What did Robby do this time?”
Lizzie flops on the couch dramatically. “I told him that he better not be late for dinner tonight, that I didn’t care if God himself told him to work late. ‘It’s date night and it’s your hide if you walk in a minute late.’ He looked at me like I was insane, said he knows you’re close, but you and he look very different.” Jack starts laughing. Lizzie swats at him, but she’s smiling as Jack grabs her hand in his. “I rolled my eyes and told him that I was well aware of who I was talking to and he better not be late, and then I gave him a quick kiss. As I was walking away, I heard him tell a nurse that she was mistaken, that I wasn’t his girlfriend.” She humphs in semi-feigned irritation. Jack runs his fingers over the back of her hand and reached for his phone with the other.
“We knew it would be a battle, baby, and we both agreed that he’s worth it.” Lizzie and Jack share a look, soft smiles matching. “I’ll text him, make sure he knows you weren’t kidding.”
Sweetheart, if I were you, I wouldn’t be late. Hell, you might wanna be early. It only takes a few minutes for a response to arrive. Why the hell would I be in trouble for being late to YOUR date night?? Jack groans. Because you’re an integral part of date night, genius. You, me, Lizzie: 8pm. If you’re late, I’m not letting you hide behind me this time. Love you. The next response comes almost immediately. Fine, you traitor. Love you, too.
Jack looks at his wife curled up next to him, waiting to hear what Robby had said. Lizzie is one of the great loves of his life. The other would be there soon.
“Alright baby, date night is a go.”
