Just a Dream

Summary:

Amity is finally ready to confess to Luz, so she asks Luz over to a study session in the library hideout, and plans to confess at the end.

Work Text:

Amity’s eyes snapped open and she glanced over to the calendar next to her bed. ‘Today is the day.’ She told herself. After weeks of attempting to drop hints and subtly tell her best friend that she had a crush on her, today she is just going to come out and say it.

Thankfully her parents were off on a business trip and wouldn’t be home until next week so she didn’t have to make up any excuses for leaving the house.

Now, if it was up to her she would take this secret to the grave and never tell the human, however it seemed her twins AND Willow and Gus had teamed-up to get Amity to tell Luz, only after they spent days attempting to convince Amity that the human, in fact, did like her back.

Amity still wasn’t fully convinced. I mean Luz was pretty, confident, smart, pretty, friendly, and pretty. Meanwhile Amity was just some ex-bully. But, she was still going to at least try, because regardless if her feelings are reciprocated or not, Luz deserved to know just how much Amity cared about the human.

Thankfully Willow, Gus, and Eda had busied themselves today so she knew there was no excuse to chicken out, both to Amity’s excitement and detriment.

She quickly drew a spell circle to summon her scroll before texting her human.

Amity: Hey Luz! I was wondering if you’d maybe want to have a little study session at our secret hideout.

They did have a test in the Abominations track coming soon so it was the perfect excuse. And while technically the hideout was only hers, Luz had been spending so much time there it was basically both of theirs

Luz ♥️: i surprisingly dont have any chores from eda today so yeah i can

Amity glances at the time, 10am.

Amity: Great! Does 1pm work for you?

Luz ♥️: that works

Amity had let out a tiny little squeal of excitement. ‘Oh my Titan, oh my Titan, oh my Titan! I’m actually going to do this!’ Amity exclaimed internally before heading over to the closet to pick out her outfit.

After a few minutes of not making any progress Amity decided she needed her sister’s help. “Emira!” She called out. “Coming!” Her older sister replied. After a minute of waiting Emira stepped through the door and walked over to Amity.

“Ohhh, these are some nice clothes.” Emira commented. “What’s the occasion?” She asked. Amity felt heat pool in her face as her sister thought about what Amity could be planning. “Oh! Does it have something to do with Luz?” Amity felt her cheeks go even redder than before. “Are you finally taking her out on a date?” She asked.

“I-I-I-I-I-” Amity stuttered. “No, n-not y-yet at least.” She said, Emira gasped. “Are you finally asking her out?!” She exclaimed. Amity, flustered beyond words, simply nodded.

Emira squealed. “Ed! You owe me 20 snails!” The older witch called out. “Did you bet on my crush with Luz?!” Amity asked, slightly annoyed with her older sister's antics.

Just then Edric barges in. “What? …Why do… I owe you… snails?” Edric says as he catches his breath. “Mittens here is asking Luz out today.” Emira said as she held out her hand for money.

“Ughh, fine!” Edric complains as he fishes in his pocket for the money before dropping them in his twin sister’s open hand. “Thank you!” Emira said, dragging out the first word.

“Ok, great, now get out!” Amity exclaimed. In response, Edric quickly turned around and ran out the open door, which Amity closed after him. “Okay, what’s the problem?”

“I- uhh, I don’t know what to wear.” Amity blashfully admits. “Ohhhh, okay, you go somewhere else I’ll text you when I’m done.” Amity hesitantly obliges and goes downstairs to grab an energy bar.

She notices Ed in the kitchen, a smirk plastered on his face. “So, finally gonna ask out the human huh, Mittens?” Amity feels a blush spread from ear to ear. “First off, how the hell did you even find out? Secondly, I don’t see why it’s any of your business.” Amity growls.

“First things first, you weren’t exactly being subtle, I’m pretty sure the whole school aside from Luz herself knows at this point. Second, you're our baby sister, of course your first crush, and all crushes, for that matter, are our business.” Edric answers.

After Amity was finished with her bar, Emira texts her.

Emira: i put together an outfit 4 u

Amity: I’ll be up shortly.

After a minute of walking to her room from the kitchen she opens her door and is greeted by her older sister. “Hello! Welcome to your outfit for today.”

Amity looks at the outfit laid out on the bed. It’s a pink, long sleeve shirt, with overalls/skirt hybrid, star patterned tights, and boots. “So, what do y-” Emira is cut off by a sudden hug from Amity. “Thank you.” She says, feeling tears of joy sting at the corner of her eyes. Emira quickly returns the embrace and replies “You’re welcome.”

Luz woke up from Eda calling her down for breakfast. She quickly changed into her regular clothes and headed downstairs, grabbed some food, and sat down.

“What job do I have to do today?” Luz asks dreadfully as she ate the food in front of her. ‘Hopefully I can finish whatever it is quickly and spend some time with Amity.’ Luz sighed quietly.

Now, contrary to what the kids back in Gravesfield would tell you, Luz wasn’t stupid. At least not when it came to romance, she knew what these feelings meant, she knew they wouldn’t be reciprocated, and she knew that when Amity found out she would leave.

None of that was to speak of the fact Amity had been planning to ask someone else to Grom. She barely knew anything about her crush’s crush except for the fact that she was a girl and Amity had just been getting closer to her.

A small distant part of Luz argued that both of those adjectives fit Luz, add in the fact that Amity seemed to constantly blush and fumble her words around the human and there seemed to be a pretty good argument that Amity’s Grom crush was her. But, in the very likely scenario that she was just imagining things, Luz shoved it all down. ‘No point in getting my hopes up when I know how this crush will end.’ Luz sighed again, louder this time.

“What’s wrong kid?” Eda asks, concerned for the human’s wellbeing. “It’s just… I’ve been crushing on Amity for a while and I know she likes someone else so I just feel like a crap friend.” Luz confessed.

Luz turned to look at her mentor to gauge her reaction. Luz noticed that she had a smirk on her face like she knew something the human did not but decided not to push it. “Well I wouldn’t worry about that much longer.” The older witch said, standing up and ruffling Luz’s hair.

This confused Luz but she learned a long time ago to not ask Eda questions. “You never answered my previous question.” Luz said, accusingly. “Oh! There isn’t much to be done today so you get today off.” Eda replies, to the human’s surprise.”Really? Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you!” Luz exclaims as she rushes to pull Eda into a hug.“Alright, kid, I get it.” Eda says, attempting to pry the human off of her, and eventually succeeded.

After a few minutes of continuing to eat her breakfast, Luz’s scroll unraveled in front of her and displayed a notification from Amity.

Amity ♥️: Hey Luz! I was wondering if you’d maybe want to have a little study session at our secret hideout.

Luz: i surprisingly dont have any chores from eda today so yeah i can

Amity ♥️: Great! Does 1pm work for you?

Luz takes a second to look at the time, 10am.

Luz: that works

***************

Both Luz and Amity just lounged around their respective houses to kill time until 12pm when Amity left to meet at the library, the extra time would allow her to give herself some time to calm her nerves.

On her way Amity felt like her heart was going to beat out of her chest and she would die long before she reached the library. ‘And maybe,’ She thought idly. ‘That wouldn’t be so terrible.’ Amity thought. Because at least then she wouldn’t have to risk everything she had built with Luz.

Luz, meanwhile, was still slightly panicking about hanging out with Amity. Logically, everything should be fine, they had hanged out before and had several study sessions in the secret hideout previously, but now Luz knew she had a crush on Amity, and that terrified her.

‘What if I say the wrong thing and scares her off? What if I accidentally confess and she hates me forever?’ Luz quickly ran through all the things that could go wrong before taking a deep breath, calming her nerves, and mentally listing all the things that could go right.

After she calmed her nerves she decided to call Willow for advice and after a handful of rings the witch answered and suddenly her face was nearly filling the scroll’s screen. “Heya, Luz!” “Hey, Willow.” Luz said. “Alright, what’s wrong?” Willow asked, recognizing that something was clearly bothering her friend from the look on her face. “It’s about Amity… I-I uhh-” Luz started but was cut off by Willow. “Let me guess, you have a crush on her?” She accused, causing Luz’s face to heat up. “H-how did you even know?! I’ve only known for a month!” Luz exclaimed. “Regardless of if you knew or not it was obvious in the way you looked at her.”

Luz felt a blush pool in her cheeks. “Do you think she likes me back?” Luz asked nervously. “Definitely.” Willow said. “How can you be so sure?” Luz asked. “Because anyone with two eyes and half a brain can tell.” The human’s friend said.

Luz, confused, asked for clarification. “She blushes constantly around you, and you only, she can hardly function if you so much as look at her, and why else would she be weirdly secretive about her Grom crush around you specifically?” Willow responded.

Luz groaned in annoyance. “I mean I guess… I have noticed those things, it's just… I’m scared I’m making it all up in my head…” Luz confessed. “Why?” Her friend asked. “Because every time I’ve had a crush it only ended up in me scaring them away.” Luz said, dejectedly.

After a brief silence Willow started talking again. “Luz, look at me.” She said, and Luz did as told. “I am so sorry you had to go through that and those people suck. But, I can guarantee that she likes you back. Okay?” Willow stated. Luz sighed. “If you say so.” Then Willow had to go help her dad’s with something so she hung up.

Then she looked at the time on her scroll, and it read 12:45pm. “Crap! I’m going to be late!” Luz exclaimed before standing up, grabbing her Abomination Track homework and bolting out of the door as fast as humanly possible.

After 10 minutes of running she had finally made it to the Bonesborough Library, however she was completely out of breath so decided to rest on the steps to catch her breath.

After a bit she had finally slowed her breathing and heart rate enough where she could walk up the rest of the steps and talk to her crush. She already knew the route to the romance section by heart and which book to pull.

When she opened the secret door, Amity jumped, startled by the sudden noise. “Oops, sorry!” Luz apologized. “Oh! Luz! Um… hi.” The witch said nervously as she tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear and before clearing her throat.

“Hey Amity, you look um… really pretty.” Luz thought she might have seen a blush on her crush’s face, but it was so faint and went away so quickly it was easy for Luz to ignore what Willow said and continue to chalk up her blushing to her own wishful thinking.

“I brought my Abomination homework, do you think you could help me with some of it?” Luz asked in a desperate attempt to get rid of the uncomfortable silence. “Yes!” Amity blurting out. “Sorry. Yes, I’ll help you.” Amity said, correcting her volume. “T-thanks.”

The two girls sat and studied for a few hours before Luz had to go home for dinner. ‘Now or never, Blight.’ Amity chanted internally. “Wait Luz!” ‘Too loud! Too loud!’ “Sorry, u-um… th-there’s something I have to tell you.”

“Oh. Okay?” Luz stared at her with confusion in her stupidly cute big brown eyes and her stupidly cute face. “I ummm… I-” Unable to continue speaking while looking at Luz, Amity tilted her head to look at the floor. “I… have a crush on you.”

Luz softly gasped. “Y-you... do?” Luz felt her heart pounding, like it was about to beat out of her chest. Amity slowly nodded her head. “But w-why?” Luz breathed out. “Why? Luz, just look at you! You’re always so energetic and care for everyone around you! You took my ‘perfect’ life and ripped it to shreds and everything is better for it!” Amity exclaimed. “P-plus you’re like… really pretty.” Amity said softly while Luz blushed heavily at all the compliments.

“Pinch me.” The human said. Amity, taken aback, asked why. “It’s a human thing, just do it.” Luz said. Amity, still confused, did while Luz closed her eyes. She felt a small prick on her arm and when she opened her eyes nothing had changed. ‘Oh my Titan, it's not a dream.’ Luz thought.

Her eyes drifted down to the other girl’s lips for just a second before she realized that maybe she could kiss the witch. “C-can I k-kiss you?” She asked nervously. “Please do.” Amity breathed out before wrapping her arms around the human’s neck and pulling her in until their lips collided.

It wasn’t perfect by any means, but once they got the hang of it everything fit together perfectly, as if the Titan himself made them fit together like puzzle pieces. Neither girl had felt this complete in… well, forever, and the weeks and months of endless pining came to a close.

After a few seconds of staying like that they both hear two gasps from the doorway to the hideout. They quickly pulled away from each other. “Edric! Emira!” Amity shouted, picking up a book and throwing it at the pair. “Get out!” She yelled at her siblings. “Yup! Yup! Leaving now!” Edric said as they both put their hands up, backed away, and closed the door.

Amity sighed. “Sorry about… all that.” She said.”It’s fine.” Luz replied. “So… um… about… what just happened… does that- what are… we?” The witch asked. The human blushed. “Umm, I… don’t exactly know…” Luz said as she rubbed the back of her neck nervously. “Do… Do you want to go out with me?” Luz asked. “Really?” The witch asked. “Well, you just confessed… and so did I… so what do you think?”  Luz teased. “Yes! Titan, Luz, of course I’ll go out with you!” Amity exclaimed, as she leapt into her human’s arms, causing Luz to fall to the floor as both of them laughed.

When both girls calmed down they realized the position they were in, Luz looking up at her girlfriend and Amity staring right back, both girls felt a blush pool in their whole face. Amity quickly rolled off to the left of her girlfriend. “S-sorry.” she stuttered out. “I-it’s fine.” Luz replied.

“Titan, I can’t believe you like me back.” Amity said. “Ha! You’re Amity Blight! I’m pretty sure most people in school have a crush on you.” Luz exclaimed. “Yeah, but… the way I treated you when we first met was… not great.” Amity replied. “I just can’t believe you like me.” Luz said. “Why?” Amity asked. “It’s just… in the human realm I was always treated as the ‘weird kid’ . I didn't even have a single friend, let alone a person interested in me romantically.” Luz confessed, sadly. “Well screw them! If they can’t see the amazing girl you are, then they don’t deserve you.” Amity countered as she cupped the human’s face and rubbed her cheek. Luz smiled. “Thanks, Ams.” “Of course, Luz.”

They giggled again. Amity looked at the time, “Crap! Sorry, Luz, I missed dinner, probably why the twins were here.” Amity said. “All good, I have to go as well anyways.” Luz said. “Oh! Quick question, do we do this-” She motioned between them. “-at school, you know with your parents and everything?” The human asked. “Yeah! My parents, thankfully, don’t have anyone spy on me while at school or whatever, she just has the teachers tell her how I’m doing.” Amity explained. “Oh… ok that’s good.” Luz said.

“Alright, see you tomorrow, babe.” Amity said casually as she picked up her backpack and walked out the door.

Luz, stunned by the sudden pet name, sat there as she felt heat cover her entire face.

While Eda was in the kitchen prepping dinner when she checked the time, the kid had been gone for a long time, not that she was surprised as the kid had been hanging out with baby Blight, who she obviously had a crush on.

A second later Luz barged in. “Heya, kiddo! How’d things go with that girlfriend of yours?” Eda asked as Luz blushed from the teasing. “About that actually…” Luz said as she rubbed her arm. “She uh… asked me out.” “Ha! Took long enough!” Eda commented. “Eda! What is that supposed to mean?!” The human asked. “You two had been pining obliviously for ages! I was wondering if one of you would ever actually confess!” Eda explained. “Yeah, yeah, whatever.” Luz replied. “Now, tell me everything, from start to finish.”

***************

When Amity got home and walked into her room she saw the twins sitting on her bed. “I take it that the confession went well?” Edric teased. “Yes, it went great. Can you get out of my room now?”  Amity asked. “Nope!” Emira said, popping the p. “Not until you give us every last detail, at least.” Emira continued.
