Win his heart (You already have mine)

Summary:

Sabrina is in love with Xanthe, she would rather not be, yet the feelings remain. Xanthe is in love with Jesse. Perhaps in helping Xanthe get with him, Sabrina could get over her own feelings too.

Or: Sabrinas inner thoughts and feelings as Xanthe gets ready for her date with Jesse.

Notes:

was already shipping them beforehand (I love childhood friends to lovers) but after chapter 9, I knew what I had to do!

Enjoy!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Most days Sabrina could pretend that love wasn't what she was feeling towards Xanthe. She'd feel her heart hammering and cheeks growing warm and pretend it was just the joy of getting to spend another day next to that wonderful girl.

In truth, Sabrina probably wouldn't have realised that what she was feeling was love had it not been for her friends. She was aware that she felt differently towards Xanthe compared to the other Starlight Dolls but Sabrina had simply assumed it was because she had known her the longest. Apparently it was not. Apparently it was obvious to everyone but them.

Sabrina was glad Xanthe had never picked up on it. Truly. The others insisted that she should tell Xanthe about these feelings. Sabrina strongly disagreed. The thought of loosing her childhood friend over something as silly as her feelings made her skin crawl. So yes, Sabrina was perfectly fine pretending that what she was feeling wasn't love.

Besides, Xanthe was in love with someone else. This was fine. Perfect, even. Perhaps this was just the thing she needed to finally get over her stupid crush. Than all could go back to the way it used to be, just them as best friends. Thus when Xanthe asked for Sabrinas help in asking Jesse out, her answer was obvious.

This leaves them here. Sabrina sitting on Xanthes bedroom floor, while Xanthe was anxiously digging through her closet. Clothes were thrown all around them. Outfits Xanthe tried on and quickly discarded because 'They aren't good enough. I need to look perfect' . In Sabrinas opinion she looked gorgeous in everything she tried on, but they both needed this to go well, so Sabrina did her best to remain unbiased.

"what do you think about this one?" Xanthe had now put on a black knee long dress. Underneath she wore a frilly blouse. She looked beautiful in it. Not for the first time today, she felt herself blush a little at the sight. "Pretty but I think it might a bit much for the small cafe you're going to." Sabrina delivered the line in a perfectly cheery tone. The one any good best friend should use in this situation. Xanthe accepted her opinion without question and renewed her search.

While she waited for Xanthe to find another outfit, Sabrina allowed herself a moment to wonder how a date between the two of them would go down. Would they go somewhere so generic as a coffee shop? She considered the thought. No, no. If it was up to Sabrina, she'd definitely choose something more personal. Something that fit them, maybe somewhere more private. Sabrina considered her options as carefully as if this was a real question. Being Xanthes friend since childhood, over the years, they had found all kinds of secret hideouts only the knew about. One of those would do just fine. Perhaps the one in the old abandoned church on the outskirt of town. The stairs up the belltower were broken and inaccessible to anyone who didn't have the advantage of flight. But oh, the view at night was as immaculate as the girl in front of her. It would make a nice spot to watch the night sky. They used to go their a lot when they were younger, wondering about their origins, as they watched the stars move. They hadn't been in a long while, the space was to small to fit their big group.

Either way, Sabrina would go there first to set up pillows and blankets to prevent them getting cold. She'd decorate the place with both their favourite flowers and fairy lights. She'd try to make Xanthes favourite sweet treats. Maybe they wouldn't turn out as good or beautiful but she knew Xanthe would accept them with a beautiful big smile. She always did. Once everything was set, Sabrina would than go to her home and knock. And when the door finally opened, Xanthe would-

"Sabrina?"

She blinked. There she was again, sitting on Xanthes floor, helping her get ready for a date with someone else. Right, this was supposed to make her get over her own feelings, not deepen them.

"Sorry Xanthe, got distracted. What where you saying?"

Distracted was an understatement but no way Xanthe would ever be allowed to find out about those thoughts.

"Just, what do you think about this one?"

Xanthe fidget with the sleeves of the yellow cardigan she had put on. Underneath she wore a light yellow dress. It was sweet and beautiful and "Perfect. You look perfect."

"Ah, you think so? I honestly almost forgot I had this dress."

"I'm sure, this is the one. It suits you perfectly. The yellow compliments you over all very well. It is pretty but not so extra that you'd stick out in the cafe. It highlights both your beauty and your more playful side." Sabrina barely stopped herself from rambling further. "I mean it, if you don't choose this one, I'll personally drag you to the cafe before you get the chance to change."

Perhaps it was her own wishful thinking but it almost seemed like Xanthes cheeks had gone slightly red. Xanthe remained quiet for a moment too long and Sabrina worried that she had said too much.

"Huh, never knew you had such a talent with words." Xanthe spoke slowly. She smiled and Sabrina knew that all is still as it should be. With Xanthe perfectly unaware. "Thank you though, I totally needed that confident boost."

"Sure thing, that's what best friends are for." Sabrina grinned. She quietly wondered who would help Xanthe get ready if it was her she was going on a date with.

The moment was interrupted by an alarm going of on Xanthes phone. She rushed to turn it off. "Seems like this is my cue! Just in time too." She laughed, Sabrina did her best to maintain her smile.

"Shall I accompany you? My homes on the way to the cafe anyway." She knew she was greedy but she didn't want to give up her time with Xanthe just yet. Because after today, her and Jesse would probably become a thing and than any chance Sabrina had would be truly over. Than Sabrina could move on too. She just hoped Xanthe wasn't the type to distance herself form her friends due to a relationship.

"Sure, why not." Xanthe agreed easily, grabbing a bag and slipping on her shoes.

"Than let's go, no need to keep the lucky boy waiting." Sabrinas tone was teasing, but she meant it. Jesse truly was lucky to be Xanthes object of affection and Sabrina could only hope he'd know cherish it. Cherish her.

Xanthe took her hand as she dragged her along. Sabrina ignored the way her heart skipped a beat.

Notes:

I'm sorry I just enjoy writing some good Angst and quiet yearning. I hope they aren't too out of character!!
