Somehow, between saving the earth and avoiding being exterminated by gate groups, the X-Men manage to become a stable, functional family. And, as it happens in the best houses, people come together, and people gossip.
He hadn't meant to overhear. He promises he didn't mean it. But one thing led to another and his legs led Gambit towards the kitchen for some good earned breakfast. In the end, it's only natural to stop when you hear people talking about you, non?
Inside the room, a girl talk was taking place or so Gambit supposed. Rogue and Jubilee cheerfully talked, trading gossip with one another. Naturally, the topic had shifted towards boys, and love, and all the other questions the younger girl had.
Of course, being that the girl's only reference were the picture perfection of Jean and Scott, it's no surprise she decided to go to Rogue instead.
“Gambit and me? What about us?” Rogue asked, sounding genuinely confused and just a tad bit defensive.
“You know. How long have you guys been dating?”
Rogue snorted, almost choking on her coffee. She quickly picked herself up before she laughed whole-heartedly.
“Dating? God forbid, sugar! We're just friends that swamp rat and me.”
“What?!” Jubilee asked, jumping from her seat, her eyes wide as saucers.
“What you're hearing. We're just friends. Nothin’ more nothin’ less. It's just some friendly teasing.”
That made Gambit pause. He stared at his hands for a single second before he fixed his hair. Like he hadn't heard anything he walked inside the kitchen and as soon as those green eyes found him, Rogue went quiet.
“Morning petite, *morning Cher.*” He couldn't quite mask the knowing glare in his dark eyes, his hand tilted slightly. As he started to prepare his own breakfast, something simple, he heard the two of them starting another talk, now straying away from the original topic.
It was only when Jubilee got up and put away her plate that he moved, walking to Rogue like a lion to a pray. His hand met her hip, spreading his fingers.
“So…” Gambit spoke so close to her that she could feel the warmth of his breath against her skin. His thumb traced her hipbone and she smiled even if she pulled slightly away. He chuckled under his breath. “Are you sure you wanna say this? That Gambit ‘on't mean nothin’ to you?”
“Sugar…” she breathed, leaning back so she could meet his eyes.
He clicked his tongue and shushed her.
“Don't sugar me, Cher…” Gambit said before he leaned just a tad bit closer. “Gambit might have over heard you…”
“So you were snooping, you rat?” Rogue said, her cheeks getting redder before she shook her head and make a move to free herself. Gambit smirked, reaching to pull her in, their charts now one glued to the others.
“You were talking about Gambit behind his back and now are surprised that you are caught, Cher?”
“It was a private conversation. Or does privacy mean something else to you?”
“Hm. Guess you're right.” He said, smug as ever, before he leaned her head back. His hand traveled lower and lower, finding the place where the back lost its name. He smirked, his teeth showing. “still. It hurt Gambit's heart to know he don't mean nothing to you.”
His eyes softened even so slightly when he did lean a bit closer.
“If you wanna be friends I'll be friends, but don't ask me to ignore all of what you make me feel.”
“Remy.” She breathed out, looking up to meet those black and red eyes.
“Anna-Marie.” He said back before he caressed her cheek with the gloved part of his hands, a faint smile drawing on his lips at the warmth of her skin against his. “I'll love you until the day I die, and if I have to, I'll live in a plastic bubble so I can touch you, or never touch you still. Just don't push me away.”
Just when Anna-Marie was about to talk back, her lips falling open to produce a rebuttal that would never come, Morph came into the room, yawning loudly.
See, you'd think that for someone with no facial expression their smirk wouldn't be half as infuriating. They introduced themselves loudly, teasing the couple of lovebirds like they weren't barely awake. Rogue made sure to brush them off while Gambit played into the teasing, but as soon as they turned to prepare their breakfast, Rogue's hand met his and she traced it, winking at him when their eyes met.
“Guess I'll have to be more careful when I'm talking behind your back, sugar.” She teased before her lips met her shoulder before she whispered a thank you to it.
That crazy woman. Gambit was known as a loverboy, a player, but for her? For her he'd do anything and he'll sure wait until she can call him something more than a friend.
