Work Text:

The post apocalyptic world didn’t really look like I expected it to. Many things fell apart faster then I thought they would. Many of my friends hadn’t made it even some of the ones that swore they would in something like this. I did however still have two of my friends with me. Etho and Bdubs who had never really fully gotten along but now they were forced to fight less so that we could actually survive. We didn’t really have a goal in the apocalypse but we kept going anyway.

Night was approaching as we walked through a long abandoned suburban neighborhood scavenging for supplies and we started looking for a house that was put together enough that we could board up for the night.

Bdubs pointed at one of the houses at the end of the street. “That one looks good enough. Etho, do we still have any planks left?”

Etho shook his head. “No, we used the last of it yesterday. We’ll just have to use the dinner table method again.”

Bdubs sighed. “Fine but Impulse is taking off the table legs this time. It’s annoying to do quickly.”

“Yeah I’ll do it. I just have to find the hammer. Do either of you have it?” I asked.

“Bdubs probably has it somewhere in his. He’s not the best at organizing.” Etho laughed.

Bdubs stared at him angrily. “You’re one to talk. I bet you don’t have yours organized much better.”

Etho rolled his eyes. “Mine is organized. Maybe not in the way you liked to organize things back at the apartment but it’s organized.”

Bdubs and Etho had lived with each other before the end of the world. They were mainly roommates out of convenience. They both worked at the same job that in the city they lived in wouldn’t pay for the inner city rent. They decided to live together thinking that if they were friends at work they’d be good as roommates. That fantasy fell apart quickly when they realized how differently they both really lived.

Fights became more common and they ended up being put on separate teams at work and just fell even more apart. Yet the apocalypse somehow brought them closer together then I ever thought they’d get. They fought less and managed to share a room most of the time without finding something to fight about. Most of the time being the important part of the sentence.

“Well maybe if back at the apartment you learned to actually put stuff where it was supposed to go, and not in some random place then I would have let you organize your part of the apartment, but you didn’t!” Bdubs yelled.

“Well it was MY part of the apartment! YOU shouldn’t have been in there most of the time!” Etho yelled back, not nearly as mad as Bdubs sounded.

“I wouldn’t have had to be in there if YOU didn’t store all your crap in my closets!”

Etho rolled his eyes. “It was both of ours first of all! Second YOU were the one who refused to get a storage unit for all your extra stuff that didn’t fit!”

“SORRY that I wanted MY stuff in MY apartment!”

I heard a noise coming from the small patch of trees. I turned to see a dark shadow coming from behind the trees.

“Uhhh guys.” I said, but they were too wrapped up in arguing to hear me.

“Oh you and I both know you didn’t need half of that stuff!” Etho yelled.

“Well you didn’t need half of your crap either!” Bdubs responded angrily.

“Guys!” I tried yelling. It still didn’t work.

“Then we could’ve split a unit! But no You just wanted-”

“GUYS!” I yelled as loud as I could.

“WHAT?!” They both yelled, turning to me.

I pointed towards the woods where a massive wave of zombies was heading straight for us. Their faces both changed to fear from anger. The zombies were closing in relatively quickly so we started running. As we ran down the street we started to slow down as the zombies were far enough behind us and we ran into a half destroyed house.

“You two have got to stop arguing cause now we have no place to stay the night!” I yelled.

They both looked apologetic. “Sorry.” They both mumbled.

I sighed. ‘How the hell did I end up with these two idiots?' is what I thought as I looked around for anything that could be useful.

The night came faster then I accounted for and we ended up boarding ourselves in one of the old bedrooms. It looked disheveled but mostly still slightly together, like most things did. Most homes hadn’t been touched since the residents left in a panic and were likely never seen again, well not alive anyways.

I sighed and rummaged through my backpack trying to find some of the food we had scavenged earlier. I missed when we had the truck we drove. It was easier to carry more stuff. How were we supposed to know that in a year all the gas would be unusable with how degraded it was. I sighed and pulled out three cans of chicken we had scavenged. I threw one to Etho and one to Bdubs.

After we ate we figured sleep would be the best play and in the morning we’d hope that no zombies had gotten in.

After we woke up and started leaving, Bdubs turned to Etho looking apologetic. “I’m sorry for yesterday.”

Etho seemed to smile from under his mask. “It’s ok. I’m glad now we both know that you were wrong.”

“YOU-” Bdubs yelled then ran after Etho down the street.

Etho laughed as he dodged Bdubs attempts at punching.

I laughed at the two. I knew deep down they were friends and they’d only become better friends as the apocalypse went on. Inevitably both ran back towards me and we went on with our journey. To hopefully find something we didn’t even know we were looking for.
