Work Text:
It was recess, and Lucas was supposed to be hanging out with the rest of the Party. Instead, he couldn't keep his eyes off of the new girl.
The girl with the firey red locks, piercing blue eyes, and baggy clothes. She had a skateboard, and Lucas was watching her skate around on the concrete.
As soon as he saw her, he knew he liked her. This was definitely a crush.
He decided he was going to ask her to the snowball. The only problem was that he didn't know how to.
Lucas had never had a girlfriend before. He was only thirteen, and it wasn't like he was very popular.
Maybe one of his friends would know? Though, he didn't think that any of them had girlfriends before, either.
He watched the wheels come to a stop on the grey concrete and looked up to meet Max's eyes.
I've been caught, he thought.
Then, Max did something he never expected.
She winked.
Not the kind of wink that could be passed off as blinking strangely or something being in her eye, but an actual, romantic wink.
Lucas knew this because she smiled, and he had yet to see her smile.
"What're you doing, stalker?" She teased.
At the same time, Lucas felt a tug on his shirt, and an annoyed voice asked, "What are you doing? We've been looking for you!"
Lucas didn't want to stop staring at Max, but he knew he had to hang out with his friends, too.
He turned around and found Mike standing right behind him, an annoyed look on his face. "Some stupid girl is more important than us, seriously?" Mike questioned.
"No!" Lucas was quick to defend himself. "But excuse me if I want to get a girlfriend." He shrugged. "I guess you don't care about that, though."
Mike rolled his eyes. "You're right. I don't care about that," he said, turning to grab Will's hand. They started to walk away, Dustin following them after giving Lucas a pitiful look. Mike turned and saw Lucas still just standing there. "Come on, we're planning our next campaign."
At that, Lucas started running to catch up. He may have had a crush, but he still loved D&D.
The next day, Lucas was back to staring at Max. He stared at her during class, during lunch, and watched her skate for all of recess.
By the end of the day, he finally worked up enough courage to ask her out.
"Max!" He called out as he watched her approaching the door to leave the school. His backpack was hanging halfway off his shoulder, but he didn't care. This would be his last chance to ask her to go to the Snowball with him.
Max stopped suddenly, looking around to find the person who had called her name. Finally, her eyes landed on Lucas, as he approached her. "Oh, hey, stalker," she greeted.
"Hi," Lucas replied. "I, uh, I was wondering if... maybe you might want to... you know..." he trailed off, his confidence lost. Hopefully Max understood.
"Are you trying to ask me out?" She questioned, almost teasing.
Lucas was shocked. "I– uhm– yes! But, like, specifically to the snowball? If you–"
"Okay," Max agreed. It was so simple that Lucas almost didn't catch it.
He raised his eyebrows. "Really?"
Max shrugged. "Sure, why not?" She decided. "Are you gonna pick me up or should I just meet you there?"
"Uh, just meet me there," Lucas told her, embarrassingly. He knew that when you asked a girl out, you were supposed to pick her up from her house– but he didn't really have any way to do that. "Me and my friends already have a ride, sorry."
"That's okay," Max assured him. Then, she kicked her skateboard up to pick it up. "See you tomorrow, Lucas," she said, pushing the door open.
Lucas blushed. Oh my god, she knows my name!
On the day of the Snowball, Lucas, Dustin, Will, and Mike all crammed into Steve's car. Dustin in the front seat, and the others in the back– Will in the middle to keep Mike and Lucas from arguing.
During the drive, Steve lectured them about not getting into any fights and told them to just have fun.
Finally, they arrived at school and all climbed out of the car. Inside, the gym was decorated with white, silver, and blue tinsel, as well as a giant banner that said, 'Welcome to the Snowball of 84'.
Dustin, Mike, and Will immediately went to go get snacks and drinks, while Lucas was scanning around the room, looking for Max.
When he finally found her, he noticed that she wasn't wearing a dress. Her clothes were much fancier than she usually wore, but it was still a great contrast to Lucas' prim suit.
Lucas didn't care.
He made his way over to her, and they locked eyes once he was close enough. "Would you like to dance, m'lady?" He asked, hoping it wasn't too cheesy.
Max giggled. "Of course," she answered, taking Lucas' hand.
Together, they danced as 'Every Breath You Take' by The Police started playing.
Max wasn't very good at dancing, but Lucas was able to teach her, showing her the proper steps.
By the end of the song, they hand finally figured it out. As they danced to the beat of the song, Lucas had his hands on Max's waist, and she had her arms draped over his shoulders.
Max used this advantage to pull herself onto her tiptoes so that she could kiss him. Lucas was surprised at first, and kept his eyes open for a moment. Then he relaxed into it, closing his eyes and kissing her back.
When they pulled apart, Max looked almost scared. "I– I'm sorry, I should have asked," she apologized.
Lucas rushed to stop her before she started rambling. "No, no, it's okay!" He assured her.
"Oh, okay," she said, relived.
"Um," Lucas started, a little nervous. "Would you, maybe, uh, like to be my girlfriend?"
Max went wide eyed for a second, then nodded and said, "Yes, absolutely."
