Work Text:
asriel knelt beside the flowerbed. frisk had left with the others long ago, leaving him behind at their grave, just as he had wished.
“i don’t hate you, chara. in case you didn’t know.” asriel whispered, even though he didn’t really need to. there was no one left in the ruins except for him. his hands gently cradled the largest flower, its golden core facing up toward the light streaming down from the skylight. “i used to wonder why mom chose this place for your resting spot, but now i understand.”
“this place is truly beautiful.” he turned his grazes toward the light, squinting slightly as he bathed in a warmth that felt like an embrace from his parents. asriel let out a breath, a faint, relieved smile curving at the corners of his lips. “i’m glad i chose it.”
the golden flower in his palm curled inward slightly, leaning into the warmth of the monster who would soon cease to exist. asriel lowered his head, pupils shaking as he watched the flower quiver in his hands. the warmth radiating from it was unlike the sunlight from the skylight. it was subtle, fleeting, far less intense than that of his parents, yet intimately familiar.
just like—them.
a soft gasp left his lips, his eyes began to glisten with tears. the tips of his fingers brushed gently against the petals and as if responding to him, the golden flower leaned against his palm, trembling like a quiet sigh.
“chara?” asriel spoke timidly, his voice sounding as small as it did on the day they passed away in their bed. “is that you?”
the golden flower didn’t answer, but its stem curled around his fingers as its leaves swayed softly. the warmth pressing against his palm, a silent ‘yeah, it’s me.’
asriel bit his lip tightly, sniffling as he cupped the flower gently with both hands. then he spoke, his voice shaky yet clearer than ever.
“i’m really, really glad i got to be your friend.”
...
me too.
