What We Do in the Night

Summary:

Days after the events of Mastermind, Blitzø and Stolas are plagued by nightmares. They want to comfort each other, but are unsure of how the other one feels and are filled with self doubt.

Notes:

Written for Stolitz Kiss Week after giving myself FOMO. Today’s theme is asleep.

Work Text:

Blitzø was being pulled away by those creepy floating fuckers in the courtroom. In front of him he could see Stolas still bound by Satan’s chains.

“Get the FUCK off me!” Blitzø screamed as he broke free and dashed towards Stolas, only to be chained by the floating demons again.

His eyes start to sting as they filled with tears, “Stolas! STOLAS!! Stolas! Fucking…use your powers, do something! Stolas!”

The large doors are slammed shut with an echoing bang.

Blitzø woke with a start, his heart hammering against his rib cage.  His clothes stuck to his skin, completely soaked with sweat.

His red eyes quickly scanned the living room of his small apartment, finally landing on the long legs stretching over the arm of the ratty couch.  Stolas’s chest slowly rose and lowered, light hoots escaping from his beak with each breath.  The almost 8 foot owl was cuddled up as much as he could on the small couch, the horseshoe blanket tucked tightly under him.

Blitzø took a few deep breaths.

Stolas was fine.

Stolas was here.

Stolas was alive.

Maybe fine was too far of a stretch.  The poor guy had lost everything just a few short days ago and now how to learn to live as a common demon.  Not to mention that his daughter still wouldn’t answer his calls.

But why had he done it?  Not that Blitzø was ungrateful, he appreciated having his head attached to his neck.  But it didn’t make any sense.  They hadn’t even talked to each other since Halloween.

“Because he loves you, asshole,” a voice growled at him in the back of his mind.

He let out a sigh.

Of course.

That was obvious even to someone as dense as him.
But was Blitzø finally ready to accept that love?  The love he had always craved but never believed he deserved?

Did this gorgeous owl sacrifice everything: his money, his magic, his title, for some idiot who couldn’t even bring himself to love him back?
A low murmur came from the couch, pulling Blitzø out of his self-deprecating spiral.

“No…,” Stolas groaned quietly in his sleep as he started to roll back and forth, as much as he could on the minuscule couch.

Blitzø threw off his own pony-themed blanket and scrambled off the bean bag, quickly regaining his balance when his hoof slipped on the floor.  The cool night air sent shivers along his spine as it instantly hit his still sweat coated skin.

“Hey, it’s ok,” he whispered softly as he lightly stroked the owl’s crest feathers.  “I’m here, everything is ok.”

Stolas’s panicked breathing evened out as quickly as it started, a small smile forming on his face as he relaxed.

Blitzø watched him sleep.  He felt a warmth growing in his chest in rhythm with Stolas’s deep breaths.  The warmth grew until it reached his face, painting his cheeks with a dark blush.

He leaned forward and ever so lightly kissed Stolas’ cheek.  His short faceplate feathers tickled Blitzø’s lips and his warmth comforted him.  He ran his claws through his crest feathers one last time before turning around and going back to his bean bag, where he fell into a comfortable sleep.

Stolas sat on his couch, sadly chewing a spoonful of Wacky Charms.  His robe hung loosely off his shoulders.  He didn’t have the energy to fully dress today.  Since that fateful full moon night with Blitzø, and the argument the following day, he didn’t have the energy to do most things.

On the TV in front of him was some sort of dreadful infomercial.  It might have been about angel protection; he wasn’t really sure.  It had been hard to concentrate on anything in the last month.  A purple glow surrounded the TV remote control as he levitated it to himself and started to mindlessly flip through the channels.

Suddenly, squeezed between a Hell-a-Novela commercial and something else he couldn’t find the desire to care enough about to register, was Blitzø.

A thick iron chain was clasped around his throat, and the bony hand of a reaper was clutching his shoulder.

Stolas started to choke on his cereal as he realizes what he’s seeing.

“Oh, my Lucifer! What are they doing?” He grabbed his cloak lying unceremoniously on the back of his couch and ran from the den.

He looked a mess as he quickly tried to get dress, panic clouding his mind as he tried to make sense of what he had just seen.  Blitzø was going to die unless he did something!

His throat burned with the feeling of acid as he choked down a sob that threatened to escape.  He needed to focus.  He hopped on one foot as he tried to quickly get his talon through his pant leg.

Every second mattered!

Dressed in his royal attire, he tore open a portal through time and space and ran into Satan’s court just in time…

… to bear witness to the executor’s blade severing Blitzø’s head from his body.

Stolas sat up with a gasp, tears flowing down his cheeks from all four eyes.  His breathing and heartbeat were ragged and sporadic.

He looked across the room to where Blitzø slept soundly on the bean bag that he had unselfishly taken as his bed since Stolas’s banishment a few days ago.

He placed a hand against his chest and he slowly took a deep breath, calming himself.

Blitzø was fine.

Blitzø was here.

Blitzø was alive.

Stolas hesitated a moment, and then slowly made his way to Blitzø.

It was such a relief to hear him snore, to see the steady rise and fall of his chest, and to see the way the glow of the city lights radiated off of his skin.
Stolas reached out to hold him, to feel his warmth next to him.

But what right did he have?  Blitzø had made it obviously clear during their last full moon night just how what he thought of Stolas.

No, he had no right to push his desires onto Blitzø again.

He turned to head back to the couch when he heard a whisper in the dark.

“Stolas?”

Stolas whipped his head to face Blitzø, ready to give some ridiculous reason as to why he was kneeling over him as the imp slept.

But his eyes were still closed, his face scrunched up in pain as the nightmare corrupted his mind.

“Stolas… no… save yourself… don’t…,” Blitzø muttered as a single tear ran down his scarred cheek.

Overwhelmed by… everything… Stolas couldn’t help himself and gently grabbed Blitzø’s sleeping form, pulling him tightly against his chest.

“I’m here, darling.  I’m safe.  It’s alright.”

Blitzø’s tail instinctively wrapped itself around Stolas’s wrist, keeping the two of them bound together.

Stolas found himself chuckling at the gesture.  He had read about how imps would hold onto their loved ones with their tails, but had never been on the receiving end of such affection.  He stroked his unscarred cheek, and hummed softly, feeling almost a little guilty for enjoying this moment.

Satisfied that Blitzø was now experiencing a more peaceful sleep, Stolas tried to wiggle his wrist out of Blitzø’s tail’s tight grip, but the appendage refused to let go.  He was trapped.

He sighed and took Blitzø’s spot on the beanbag chair, carefully placing the blanket over the two of them.

He placed a soft kiss between Blitzo’s horns, right on his circus mark, before closing his eyes and allowing sleep to claim him once again.
