Chapter Text
The red, yellow and green lollipop lights of the Sugar Rush arcade cabinet hummed softly as Litwak’s Family Fun Center finally closed for the night, signaling the start of the arcade characters' nightly post-hours freedom. Inside the grand throne room of its castle, everything was completely silent until a sharp, loud crackle of neon-blue static ripped through the quiet atmosphere.
Instead of waiting for the door to the right of the throne to slide upward, Vanellope simply phased her candy kart straight through the front doors. She guided the kart down the center aisle and expertly backed it right up to the throne, letting the custom engine idle with a sweet, low rumble.
She relaxed in her throne, stretching her arms and looking right at the front doors.
“That was a tough Random Roster Race. Can you believe that I almost crashed and came that close to not making tomorrow’s roster?”
Sour Bill didn't even look up from his bundle of laws that he was going to request Vanellope consider later, looking completely unfazed by her near-miss on the track. He simply adjusted a long, ink-stained scroll of parchment in his small hands, treating her high-adrenaline racing rush like a minor administrative interruption.
He sighed monotonously. "If we don’t cut down on the allocation of trophies for the top three, then the whole game will face an un-patched inflation bug by the end of tonight—"
BANG!!”
The heavy double doors slammed open, completely cutting Sour Bill off as Gloyd Orangeboar burst into the throne room...
Vanellope’s hazel eyes locked on the huge scroll tucked under Gloyd's arm. "Geez Louise, look at the size of that! What’s the word, Gloyders? Are we finally overriding something?"
Gloyd didn't say a single word. He just gave her a mischievous mysterious grin and walked straight down the center of the royal carpet. He flung the massive stack of parchment forward, rolling the blueprints wide open right across the throne room floor.
Sour Bill didn't have time to step out the way. The heavy scrolls of paper swept him off his feet and completely burying the tiny green sour ball flat on his back under a massive blueprint sheet of the castle's exterior gate.
"President Vanellope, look upon your brand new castle!" Gloyd announced triumphantly, ignoring the muffled, miserable groans vibrating right through the white parchment.
He dropped down on his knees, pinning the top corners of the blueprints to the floorboards with two heavy jawbreakers from his pockets.
"I just finalized the schematics. Look at this."
A flat, suffocated voice suddenly echoed straight through the paper near Gloyd's left knee. "Mmm... Madam President... I am pinned beneath the asset map. The physical weight of this paper load is highly irregular."
Neither Gloyd nor Vanellope even looked down, focusing entirely on the blueprints. Completely tuning out the muffled complaints vibrating through the parchment, Vanellope stepped right over the moving lump in the paper, her eyes widening as she scanned the massive layout scrawled in licorice ink.
“Oh, wait! I see what you did there, Count Candy Corn. You completely bypassed the main entrance gates."
Gloyd smirked proudly, leaning forward on his knees over the parchment. "Exactly! I knew Taffyta and Swizzle would just try to vault over any jump-scare assets I put in the main hallways to show off their stats. So, I hid the ultimate shortcut override right where they’d least expect it. If they try to bypass the corridor tricks, the system automatically routes them straight into the primary level grid."
“They’re going to vault over them,” Vanellope laughed. “Swizzle is just going to turn the whole thing into his own personal indoor stunt park and Taffyta is dramatic enough to pull a vault off.”
“That’s why they’re hidden. They won’t expect anything. None of us will expect anything. That makes my whole idea even more fun than these blueprints show.”
“Madam President—”
Completely tuning him out, Vanellope casually stepped right over the moving lump in the paper to get a closer look at the center grid. She grinned exuberantly as she pointed at the center of one of the blueprints.
“Is that a large trapdoor in the middle of the throne room?"
Gloyd nodded. “For the dungeon maze I have planned.”
“Showmeshowmeshowmeshowme.”
With a theatrical swoop of his arms, Gloyd reached over and aggressively flipped back the top sheet of parchment, unrolling blueprint number two right over the floorboards. In his rush at doing so, he accidentally dragged the heavy paper right over Sour Bill’s face, sealing him even deeper under the schematics.
"Behold!" Gloyd announced, pointing a mittened hand at the intricate scrawl of black ink and neon-green icing gridlines. "The Royal Subterranean Dungeon Labyrinth! I've pre-coded a full environmental overwrite directly underneath the floorboards. It locks out the racers' automated navigation subroutines, the walls shift textures dynamically when you aren't looking, and if anyone takes a wrong turn near the checkpoint..."
He leaned in close to Vanellope, lowering his voice to a whisper.
"...a low-quality, glitchy skeleton pops out of a candy-coffin and screams at your frame rate in highly compressed audio!"
Vanellope’s jaw dropped in absolute awe, her eyes sparkling as she stared down at the maze blueprints. "Gloyd, you are a literal genius. We can trap Taffyta in there for hours!"
A monotone, suffocated voice echoed miserably from beneath the castle gate section right near Gloyd's knees. "An unpatched subterranean dungeon maze... will trigger a server rendering error. If the physics engine stalls—"
"Look over here at the jump-scare coordinates instead! What do you think of them, Vanellope?”
“Ooh, that’s…completely un-rendered and totally not illegal.”
Gloyd said nothing as he reached into his jacket pocket and got out a laser pointer.
"As you can see by this red dot," Gloyd announced, puffing out his chest, waving his arms around excitedly that the dot bounced from the blueprints to the ceiling as the laser was pointed at the Vanellope’s face, "the eastern corridor will be completely, entirely rigged with automatic chocolate-fudge tripwires. If you hit one, a giant, un-rendered asset of a spooky digital bat drops down and screams at you in low-quality audio."
"Gloyd, you're pointing the laser at my nose," Vanellope pointed out. "And your red dot is currently vibrating into the rafters. Are you trying to scare me or the castle ceiling?"
"It’s an aggressive design presentation, Vanellope!" Gloyd argued back defensively, accidentally dropping the laser pointer into a nearby bowl of frosting where it sank with a soft bloop. "The point is, the immersion is going to be total! And highly terrifying!"
"Yeah, well, if you put the asset-glitch jump scare in the main hallway, Taffyta is just going to bypass it by vaulting over it the moment she sees it," Vanellope countered, leaning over to get a look at the blueprints. She grinned wickedly as she reached her hand into the bowl to take out the frosting covered laser pointer and tapping her chin with it. “Swizzle too.”
Vanellope clicked the button, sending a bright red dot straight onto Gloyd’s nose before he could respond, leaving a tiny dollop of white vanilla frosting right on the top of his pumpkin hat.
"Hey! Watch the hat, Vanellope!" Gloyd grumbled, folding his arms and squinting down at his sticky nose.
"Oh, please, you look like a glowing candy corn," Vanellope giggled, waving the laser pointer around so the red dot bounced off his cheeks. "Besides, if your hallway scare is a bust, what else did you draw up? You can't call a historical holiday initiative without a backup plan."
Gloyd smirked, leaning over his knees as he tapped a completely separate section of the layout. "I don't do busts, Vanellope. If they vault over the hallway, they’re landing right into my master trap. Want to move these somewhere else, Vanellope? I have more blueprints that I want to show you. Maybe call the others to get them on board.”
“Okay, okay.” Vanellope reached into her hoodie pocket and took out a walkie talkie, turning it on to contact the other racers. “Let’s move these blueprints into my meeting room. Come on.”
Together, Vanellope and Gloyd quickly rolled the massive sheets back up into a tight bundle, lifting the heavy paper load off the royal carpet. The second the blueprints cleared the floor, they revealed Sour Bill flat on his back, his feet pointing straight up at the ceiling, and his hands rested against the floor.
He blinked slowly and thankfully at the sudden return of the room's lighting, letting out a tiny, dazed cough as a stray speck of neon-orange frosting dust drifted off his forehead.
Vanellope instantly winced, her cheeky smirk softening into a look of genuine, sheepish guilt. She dropped her end of the scroll, trotted straight over to him, and extended a small hand to help him up.
"Oh, yikes... sorry about that, Bill," Vanellope apologized, giving him a sympathetic, crooked grin as she pulled him back onto his feet. "Gloyd got a little carried away with the theatrical roll-out, I guess. You alright? No cracked candy coating or anything?"
Sour Bill stood up straight, dusting himself off with slow, rhythmic pats, his face instantly returning to its default state of pure, unadulterated administrative misery.
"My physical integrity remains within standard operational parameters, Madam President," Sour Bill murmured in his flat, deadpan monotonous voice. "However, my dignity has suffered a temporary rendering error.”
Vanellope laughed, giving his head a light pat.
Heaving the heavy bundle of scrolls between them, Vanellope and Gloyd led the way out of the throne room and down the long peppermint-lined corridor toward the royal meeting room, with a grumbling Sour Bill trailing right behind them.
They reached the meeting room in an instant, rolling each of the blueprints out on the long, candy table right as everyone else got there. Muttering what the meeting was all about, they gathered around the table, taking their usual themed chairs (well, except Swizzle, who had vaulted straight up towards the ceiling to view the plans from up there) as Gloyd pointed at the blueprint in front of Vanellope.
"Everyone, feast your eyes on Section One," Gloyd announced proudly, tapping a mittened finger against the center scroll. "This is the primary courtyard layout…”
Taffyta leaned forward, her pink racing helmet tilting downward as she traced the newly drawn ink lines leading straight to her designated stall.
“Wait a second, Gloyd," Taffyta squinted at the parchment, her eyes narrowing as she spotted a red marker right over her usual parking spot. "Is that an automated trapdoor labeled 'Taffyta's Silk Ruiner'?”
Gloyd quickly raised his mittens defensively, offering her a nervous, wide grin. "Hey, it’s a specialized holiday feature! The name is purely decorative, Muttonfudge. Mostly."
High above the table, Swizzle was hanging upside down from a peppermint girder, swinging his legs back and forth to get a better angle on the blueprints laid out below him. Instead of being worried about a trap, his eyes lit up with competitive excitement.
“Do I have a designated vault spot!” he shouted from above.
Gloyd chuckled, tracing a bright orange line that went up a pillar and straight across the ceiling layout. "Better than a vault spot, Malarkey! I marked the main chandeliers as high-altitude swing zones. If you hit the speed boost at the entrance, you can jump clear over the throne room and land at the doors!"
"Rad!" Swizzle cheered. He swung upwards, grabbing at a thick decorative peppermint beam with both hands and reached one of them into a pocket of his jacket to pull out a tangled mess of festive decorations.
Rancis stood up on his chocolate chair, staring anxiously up at the ceiling where Swizzle Malarkey was now dangling upside down by his boots from a vaulted peppermint beam, trying to hang a string of plastic spiders. "Hey, President of Fun, if Swizzle drops one of those plastic spiders on my hood, I'm logging out early. I just polished my kart for the evening."
"Oh, relax, Reese's Pieces!" Swizzle called down, doing a casual mid-air spin. "The gravity parameters are totally in my favor."
Sour Bill pressed his hands against his face, his voice dropping into a deeper note of misery. "Please tell him to come down before he triggers a system gravity fault and lands on the table."
Vanellope looked unbothered as she studied the dungeon maze plans much closer. "Eh. Swizzle can be all the way up there if he wants."
Swizzle let out a loud, triumphant cheer, doing a small pull-up on the beam he was hanging from. "Hear that, Bill? Immunity from the President of Fun!”
Sour Bill let out a monotone sigh that seemed to echo off the castle walls, checking another box on his tablet. "I’m going to have to register a formal administrative complaint against the entire month of October and have Vanellope consider it..."
“Nice try, Bill. I have zero interest in doing that,” Vanellope shot back with a cheeky grin, waving a dismissive hand.
Taffyta rolled her eyes, tapping her white racing gloves against the polished chocolate table. "Fine, whatever, let Swizzle break the ceiling code.”
“Ceiling code? This is an adrenaline zone.”
It's a rendering hazard," Sour Bill muttered.
"A total environmental overwrite?" Snowanna asked, leaning forward on her elbows. "We've never done anything like that before. The base textures have been bright pink since this cabinet was plugged in."
"I don't care how neon-glitchy this party gets," Taffyta laid down the law, folding her arms tightly. "If anyone gets green taffy cobwebs on the good velvet throne cushions, I am personally locking them out of the server."
"Oh, lighten up, Taff," Vanellope laughed, hopping up to stand right on top of the candy conference table. "What's the point of having a total spooky environmental override if we're the only ones here to look at it? I say we blow the server gates wide open and invite the neighbors! Let's get Ralph, Felix, and Calhoun over here!"
