Chapter Text
The day had started out fine. Varian got up as normal, Hugo sleeping in for about another half an hour before waking up. ever since Hugo and Varian had moved into the castle (because of there jobs as the royal engineers,) Hugo had never slept in his room. Instead he basically lived in Varian’s. Which Varian was happy about. It was always nice to have your lover comfort you when you inviolately woke up with nightmares, like Varian did almost every night. It was also nice to cuddle at night, and talk about your day with each-other, to get ready in the mornings, to kiss and all that good stuff. Varian loved it.
One thing he didn’t love though was that Hugo would always be there when Varian didn’t want him to see him so broken. When he was at his lowest, unable to take care of himself. Unable to do anything. Just a broken mess. Varian pushed this thought to the back of his mind, it sending a shiver down his spine. Somehow Hugo noticed.
Hugo wrapping his arms around Varian’s waist, nuzzling his face into the space between Varian’s neck and shoulder. “You ok bluebird?” Hugo says sleepily, as he just woke up. Varian leaned into the warmth. “Mhmmm” he hummed. Hugo gently, and lovingly pecking Varian’s neck from behind. “Ok hun. I love you” Hugo mumbled, still half asleep. “I love you too. So much” Varian says slightly gazing back at his beautiful boyfriend. Oh how he loved that man.
After Varian’s and Hugo’s usual morning routine of brushing their teeth, lot and lots of hugs and cuddles, sweet sleepy kisses, and getting dressed for work. Varian and Hugo walked through the castle halls to their lab. Varian and Hugo always did that, everyday they had work. And oh how Varian loved the repetitiveness. However, still somehow their conversations never got old. Hugo also knew that this routine was important for Varian. Him noticing Varian being more cranky and anxious without it. So he made sure it always happened, even without being asked.

When work was finally done, and man had it been a hectic day. Firstly, after Hugo and Varian walked to get lunch, they didn’t have any food Varian could really eat. Well it wasn’t that he couldn’t eat it, it was that he refused. He was not going to eat it. Why would you want to eat casserole? It’s ok, he would just pretend to. But then he DID eat it! Because Hugo shoved some in his mouth! The audacity of his boyfriend. So that sucked. And then after that the boiler for the castle broke and almost exploded!! Like seriously? After that ruddiger knocked over some chemicals so him and Hugo had to clean them all up. To say the least, it had been a long day.
But Varian and Hugo were finally back to their room, what could go wrong? A lot apparently. Varian had forgotten about a ball that was going on that night. And gosh he felt stupid for it, all the signs were there. All the people rushing around in a panic trying to get everything perfect for tonight. How could he not have known? Varian self loathes as he stares out into the distance trying to tie his tie.
Hugo notices.
“Goggles you want some help?” Hugo says with a chuckle, coming over and tying Varian’s tie. “You ok? You seem a little… mmmm let’s go with off today.” Hugo says in his usual charismatic tone, giving Varian a smug look.
Varian just rolled his eyes. “I’m fine Hugo.” Hugo’s smug look soon turned to one of concern.
Man, Varian really did look off today. His dark circles darker, the way he would brush his hair out of his face with announce, the way he would fidget with his clothes and then give up trying to fix them, just the way he would bite his lip three times to make things a little more bearable. Hugo was worried. Gently cupping Varian’s cheek, and pushing a part of his dark hair behind his ears. He said in a tender and concerned voice, “Are you really ok?”
Oh gosh, how sweet Hugo’s gaze was, and how much Varian wanted to tell him everything. How much everything hurt today, how his clothes burned, and each noise was to loud, and how the sun that day was to bright, and how everything felt chaotic and wrong. He was shaken to his core, his breaking point. But he couldn’t… how could he l tell the love of his life that? Why would he want him to worry? To have to take care of him? To have the burden of him? To have to see him broken?
He didn’t.
So instead Varian put on the most realistic smile he could make at the moment, and said “I’m fine, really love.” Varian leaned into Hugo’s hand. “Ok I believe you. But if you’re not, please tell me.” Hugo says looking Varian concernedly in the eyes. Varian just nods, wordless. Hugo kisses Varian on the cheek “ok let’s go” Hugo says with a smirk.
