Work Header

more than roommates?

Summary:

Juhoon was only planning to spend the night studying at the library and avoiding his roommate’s obnoxious friends. He wasn’t expecting to come back to an empty room, a strangely quiet Martin, or a conversation that would make him see his annoying roommate in a completely different light.

Work Text:

9:04 PM

Juhoon was heading out to the library.

His roommate, Martin, had said he was having friends over for drinks tonight.

Just great.

If there was one thing Juhoon hated, it was a bunch of brainless, drunk jocks. By judging the people Martin usually hung out with, he knew the night would be anything but quiet.

He couldn’t stay in the room even if he tried.

So, with his bag slung over his shoulder and his headphones in, Juhoon made his way to the library.

It was pretty empty, just a few students studying and the librarian sitting behind the front desk.

Perfect.

Juhoon walked over to his usual table, dropped his bag onto the chair beside him, and pulled out his laptop and textbooks.

It was nice and quiet, just how he liked it.

…

1:47 AM

Juhoon looked down at his phone, realizing how late it had gotten.

“Shit,” he muttered to himself.

He quickly packed up his things before heading back to his dorm.

He prayed that Martin was the only one there. The last thing he wanted was to come back to a room with Martin’s friends sprawled all over the place.

As he opened the door, he was met with darkness.

And quiet?

Nothing like what he’d expected.

Juhoon stepped inside, figuring Martin had probably left with his friends. He flicked on the light and walked farther into the room, only to spot someone sitting on the edge of Martin’s bed.

“Martin?”

Martin looked up from his phone.

He looked… upset?

Juhoon frowned.

“Are you okay?”

“Yeah, whatever.”

“Are you sure?”

Juhoon walked toward him, stopping right in front of Martin’s bed.

Martin shrugged and looked back down at his phone.

“I’m fine, Juhoon.”

“Okay, and I’m asking if you’re sure.”

Martin let out a sigh.

“Why do you care?”

Juhoon raised an eyebrow.

“I’m your roommate. I’m pretty sure I’m allowed to ask.”

“Right.”

The room fell quiet again.

Juhoon glanced around, noticing the two untouched cups on Martin’s desk and the unopened snacks scattered beside them.

“Where are your friends?”

“Don’t know.”

“What do you mean, you don’t know?”

“They said they’d come over.” Martin locked his phone and tossed it onto his bed. “Guess they changed their minds.”

“Oh.”

Juhoon wasn’t sure what to say to that.

He’d expected to come back to a room full of loud, obnoxious guys, not find Martin sitting alone in the dark.

“I’m sorry,” he said eventually.

Martin looked up at him, seemingly surprised.

“For what?”

“Your friends being assholes, I guess.”

That earned a small laugh from Martin, although it disappeared almost as quickly as it came.

“They’re not assholes. They probably just found something better to do.”

Juhoon frowned.

“That doesn’t make you feel any better.”

Martin stared at him for a moment before looking away.

“Didn’t know you cared so much about my feelings.”

There it was again. That stupid flirting.

Juhoon rolled his eyes.

“Never mind. Should’ve left you here to rot.”

“Aw, you came back because you missed me?”

“I’m going to bed.”

“It’s almost two in the morning. You were already out all night. Don’t tell me you missed me that badly.”

Juhoon turned toward him.

“You’re actually insufferable.”

Martin grinned, and for a second, he looked like his usual self.

Then his smile faded.

“Hey, Juhoon?”

“What?”

“Would you mind staying for a bit?”

Juhoon paused.

Martin wasn’t looking at him anymore. His fingers were picking at the edge of his blanket, and suddenly, he looked a lot younger than the confident jock Juhoon had gotten used to dealing with.

“I’m not really in the mood to be alone right now.”

Juhoon hesitated.

“Fine. But if you start flirting with me again, I’m leaving.”

Martin smiled a little.

“Can’t make any promises.”

Juhoon walked over to the desk, eyeing the two cups and the bottle of alcohol Martin had brought.

He picked up both cups, handing one to Martin before sitting beside him on the bed.

“Is this your first cup?”

“Yeah…” Martin mumbled.

Juhoon nodded, glancing down at his own drink.

“Cheers?”

“Cheers.”

Martin smiled as their cups clinked together.

They both took a sip.

Fifteen minutes later

The room felt a little less awkward than it had before.

Their conversation had started with small, insignificant things, but somehow, they’d ended up talking about college, their classes, and Martin’s friends.

Juhoon leaned back against the wall, holding his cup loosely in one hand.

“So, do they always cancel on you like that?”

Martin turned to look at him.

“Who?”

“Your friends.”

“Oh.” Martin stared into his cup. “Sometimes.”

Juhoon waited for him to elaborate, but he didn’t.

“That’s stupid,” Juhoon said eventually.

Martin let out a quiet laugh. “You’re not exactly making me feel better.”

“I’m not trying to. I’m just saying your friends suck.”

“Yeah, well, they’re my friends.”

“Unfortunately.”

Martin nudged his shoulder.

“You’re so mean to me.”

“And yet, you keep talking to me.”

“Maybe I like talking to you.”

Juhoon glanced at him.

Martin seemed to realize what he’d said a second too late.

“What?” Juhoon asked.

“Nothing.”

“No, go on.”

Martin shook his head, taking another small sip from his cup.

“Forget it.”

Juhoon studied him for a moment. It was strange seeing Martin like this. Usually, he was loud, confident, and always had something to say. Now, he seemed to be choosing his words carefully.

It was almost… cute.

Not that Juhoon would ever admit that.

“Can I ask you something?” Juhoon said.

Martin looked over. “Sure.”

“Why do you flirt with me so much?”

Martin nearly choked on his drink.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

“I don’t flirt with you that much.”

Juhoon stared at him.

Martin looked away.

“Okay, maybe a little.”

“A little?”

“Okay fine.”

Juhoon laughed, and Martin found himself staring at him.

It was the first time he’d heard Juhoon laugh like that. Not the little amused huffs he usually let out whenever Martin embarrassed himself, but an actual laugh.

Martin decided, right then, that he wanted to hear it again.

“Seriously, though,” Juhoon continued. “You act like that with everyone, or am I special?”

Martin went quiet.

For once, he couldn’t come up with a single stupid line.

Juhoon raised an eyebrow.

“Martin?”

“I’m thinking.”

“That’s new.”

“Shut up.”

Juhoon smiled into his cup.

Martin took a breath, turning to face him.

“Maybe I just think you’re cute, okay?”

Juhoon’s smile faltered.

Oh.

He hadn’t expected that.

Martin immediately started backtracking.

“I mean, you’re obviously cute. It’s not like I’m blind. and if you don’t like it, I’ll stop—”

“Martin.”

“What?”

Martin closed his mouth.

Juhoon watched him for a second before a small smile returned to his face.

“Who said I didn’t like it?”

Martin went quiet.

They stared at each other for what felt like forever, neither of them saying a word.

Then Juhoon slowly began leaning closer.

Martin had absolutely no idea what to do.

Was this actually happening?

Juhoon stopped just inches from his face, giving him enough time to pull away if he wanted to.

“Is… this okay?” Juhoon asked quietly.

Martin couldn’t even form a proper sentence. Instead, he nodded before leaning forward, closing the remaining distance between them.

Their lips met.

And Martin immediately forgot how to function.

He’d never kissed anyone before, let alone dated anyone. He’d always been the last one in his friend group when it came to relationships, and now that it was finally happening, he had no idea what he was doing.

Juhoon, on the other hand, seemed like an expert.

Martin wasn’t sure where to put his hands, how close he was supposed to get, or whether he was even kissing him properly.

He was pretty sure his heart was about to jump out of his chest.

After a moment, Juhoon pulled away slightly, looking at Martin’s flustered expression.

“Just relax,” he said with a small smile.

Martin tried to laugh, but it came out awkwardly.

“I’m relaxed.”

Juhoon stared at him.

“Right.”

“Shut up.”

Juhoon chuckled, brushing a hand through his own hair.

“Is this your first time?”

Martin froze.

He could lie. He could pretend he’d done this a hundred times before. It would probably be easier than admitting that the guy he’d been trying to impress for weeks was his first kiss.

But Juhoon was looking at him expectantly, and Martin had a feeling he’d see right through him anyway.

“…Maybe.”

Juhoon’s eyebrows lifted.

“Maybe?”

Martin groaned, covering his face with both hands.

“Can you please not make this worse?”

“I’m not making anything worse.”

“You’re literally laughing at me.”

“I’m laughing with you.”

“There’s no difference.”

Juhoon laughed again, and Martin reluctantly lowered his hands.

For a moment, they simply looked at each other.

Then Juhoon’s expression softened.

“Hey, it’s okay,” he said. “There’s nothing wrong with that.”

Martin looked at him, searching his face for any hint of teasing.

“You’re not gonna make fun of me?”

“Why would I?”

“Because I’m apparently the only person on campus who’s never kissed anyone.”

Juhoon tilted his head.

“That’s a pretty big assumption.”

Martin shrugged.

“Feels like it.”

“Well, I didn’t mind being your first.”

Martin stared at him.

He could feel his face getting hot all over again.

“Can you stop saying things like that?”

“Why?”

“Because you’re making it really hard for me to think.”

Juhoon grinned.

And before he could say anything else, Juhoon leaned in and kissed him again.

They kept getting closer and closer until Martin barely had any room left to think.

Before he knew it, Juhoon had shifted onto his lap, settling there with an easy confidence that made Martin forget how to breathe. One hand rested on Martin’s shoulder while the other rested against his neck.

Martin was completely distracted by the kiss. He’d spent weeks trying to get Juhoon’s attention, and now that he finally had it, he couldn’t believe this was actually happening.

He’d imagined kissing Juhoon before.

He just hadn’t imagined Juhoon sitting on his lap while doing it.

Before he knew it, Martin felt himself getting worked up.

Juhoon immediately noticed and pulled back from the kiss.

“Shit,” Martin muttered, completely out of it, his lips still numb from making out.

“Sorry, I got a little carried away.”

Juhoon stared at him for a moment.

“Can we continue?”

Martin looked up at Juhoon, surprised.

“You’re.. not upset?”

Juhoon shook his head

“Of course not.”

Martin stared at Juhoon, then glanced back at his lips.

“Please … Can we continue?”

Juhoon leaned in and kissed Martin again, slowly moving back and forth.

Martin let out an embarrassing little sound.

They eventually pulled away from the kiss, both looking a little flustered.

Juhoon rested his head on Martin’s shoulder, bringing them closer together.

they kept going getting faster and faster, creating a perfect rhythm

“I’m gonna—” Juhoon began, his voice shaky.

He squeezed Martin’s shoulders.

“Me too,” Martin replied. Gripping Juhoons waist.

A few seconds later, they both slowed down until they stopped.

Neither of them moved. They simply sat there for a moment, taking it all in.

Both of them breathing heavily.

Eventually, Juhoon broke the silence.

“Did you enjoy it?”

Martin looked a little embarrassed.

“Yeah.”

“I’m gonna take a shower.” He climbed off martins lap. “Get in after me.”

Martin nodded.
