The way home.

Summary:

After the Nine-Tails attack, Naruto is left an orphan in a village that fears him. Kakashi has lost almost everyone he has ever loved. Alone and grieving, they find a home in each other.

Kakashi vows to give Naruto the childhood he deserves, and somewhere between raising his son and growing closer to Iruka, he begins to build a life he never thought he could have. For once, things feel almost perfect. But Kakashi has never believed himself lucky enough to keep the things he loves.

When he's sent away on a dangerous mission and late coming home, the stories Naruto’s heard in the Academy about scary missing-non suddenly become more real. Terrified for his dad, Naruto ventures into the forest in search of his dad but runs straight into a group of missing-nin.

Kakashi has spent his life believing that everything he loves is destined to die in his hands. But Naruto is his pup. His family. His reason to keep the man beneath the mask alive. And when he finds his son hurt, frightened, and smelling of strangers' hands, the last fragile threads of his humanity will snap.

They should pray the shinobi finds his son before the wolf does.

Chapter 1: Hold the baby close to your chest, let it feel the pounding in your heart.

Summary:

Naruto deserved better.
Kakashi did too.

Chapter Text

Naruto deserved a childhood full of love and warmth. Of lazy Sundays, warm baths, and bedtime stories. He deserved the freedom to be a child without worrying about what tomorrow might bring.

Kakashi agreed.

He couldn't give Naruto a world without danger, or promise that nothing would ever hurt him. But he could give him a home to return to, a hand to hold when things became frightening, and the certainty that he would always be wanted.

Kakashi knew better than most how easily a life could change. He had learned young that loving someone didn't mean you could keep them, and that sometimes the people left behind had to find a way to live with questions that would never be answered.

He didn't want that for Naruto. He wanted his son to grow up with the sort of security Kakashi had never quite learned to expect. The sort that he had begged for.

It was a small thing to want, perhaps. An ordinary life.

Kakashi had come to understand that ordinary didn't mean easy. It meant having something worth coming back to.

And nothing could keep him from getting his pup home safely. Gods help anyone who tried.
